If a football team takes on the personality of its quarterback, you get the feeling the Ohio Bobcats are in for a smooth ride as long as Fred Ray is at the helm.

Soft spoken but confident, Ray doesn't seem to let the little things bother him. "Fred or Freddie?," we asked the Martins Ferry native. But he just shrugged. "Some people call me Freddie and some Fred," he replied, not appearing one bit concerned.

Winners of four of their last five, the once left-for-dead Bobcats (4-2 MAC East)...

The hitting might be a little more intense at Ohio Bobcat football practice Wednesday as Marshall's thrilling 36-34 win over Miami Tuesday night kept Ohio (4-2 MAC East) in contention to host the MAC title game.

Playing without injured Heisman hopeful QB Byron Leftwich, the hyped up Herd rode the arm and legs of back-up sophomore Stan Hill to the win. Hill threw for four touchdowns and ran for the winning score with five seconds left as the Herd improved to 47-1 at Marshall Stadium since re-j...

Senior safety Joe Sellers raced 28 yards after picking up an Akron fumble for a key third-quarter touchdown as Ohio rallied to beat the Zips 27-10 in Peden Stadium.

The win kept Ohio's slim MAC East title hopes alive pending the outcome of Tuesday night's nationally televised Marshall-Miami contest. Ohio (4-2 MAC East, 4-6) must hope Marshall beats Miami in Huntington in order for Nov. 23's OU-Marshall game to have title implications. The Bobcats would also have to beat UCF and have UCF beat...

Ohio returns to Peden Stadium Saturday afternoon to host Akron. The Bobcats (3-6 Overall, 3-2 MAC) are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 38-20 loss at Miami. The Zips (2-7, 1-4), meanwhile, are coming off perhaps the biggest win in school history as they defeated 25th-ranked Marshall 34-20 last week. Akron enters the contest having won three straight over Ohio.

The Bobcats will be facing a what has been a very porous defense. The Zips are allowing opponents 431.4 yards and and 36.9...

Miami (OH) expeditiously capitalized on two crucial first-half turnovers to turn around a game in which Ohio had started quickly to jump to a 28-7 halftime lead and ultimately beat the Bobcats 38-20 in Oxford.

With the score tied 7-7 in the second quarter, Miami Univ. (OH) marched only 14 yards for a score after a Chad Brinker fumble and only 17 yards after a Stafford Owens fumble to leap to a 21-7 lead while only 1:39 elapsed on the game clock.

Ohio puts its 3-1 MAC record on the line when the Bobcats (3-5 overall) travel to Oxford Saturday to take on arch-rival Miami. The RedHawks (6-3, 4-1) are fresh off a 27-13 win at Toledo. For many Ohio fans, the game will be a barometer for the team. Has the team finally turned the corner under second-year head coach Brian Knorr? Or have the Cats simply feasted upon the misfortunes of the MAC's cellar dwellers?

Behind the quarterbacking of Fred Ray, Ohio has put 50 points on the board in cons...

In addition to the alumni, the Ohio offense enjoyed a Homecoming Saturday as it ran up 550 yards to lead the Bobcats to 55-27 win over Eastern Michigan.

Chad Brinker tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns as Ohio scored a TD on all of its first half possessions and rolled to a 41-13 halftime advantage, sending school officials to the archives to see whether or not the 41 points in one half is a school record in itself. Brinker's 127 yards on 17 carries paced an Ohio rushing attack...

Kevin Kerr booted through a 37-yard field goal with 10 seconds left as Ohio rallied to break one of the nation's longest Division 1-A losing streaks at 10 games. Perhaps even more important than the 34-32 win for the Bobcats against a 1-4 Buffalo squad was the way they won ? mounting a come-from-behind victory in the final minute.

Since Brian Knorr took over last season, the string of games Ohio lost after leading or being tied in the second half began to read like a mini-version of its sched...
