The hitting might be a little more intense at Ohio Bobcat football practice Wednesday as Marshall's thrilling 36-34 win over Miami Tuesday night kept Ohio (4-2 MAC East) in contention to host the MAC title game.
Playing without injured Heisman hopeful QB Byron Leftwich, the hyped up Herd rode the arm and legs of back-up sophomore Stan Hill to the win. Hill threw for four touchdowns and ran for the winning score with five seconds left as the Herd improved to 47-1 at Marshall Stadium since re-joining the MAC in 1997. The Herd's final drive was aided by two controversial pass interference calls in the end zone that left Miami coach Terry Hoeppner stunned and steamed.
Following the game, Herd fans rushed the field, leading to a violent incident between Redhawk defensive coordinator Jon Wauford and a fan. Wauford was escorted by police from the field in handcuffs and the injured fan, a Pickerington, Ohio, native, was taken off the field on a stretcher.
Authorities charged Wauford with a misdemeanor battery count, and he posted bond and left Huntington with the Redhawk team. The fan was in stable condition with undisclosed injuries at a Huntington hospital.
To win the MAC East crown, Ohio must beat Marshall and UCF to close out the season and have UCF win in Oxford on Nov. 23.
