ATHENS – The Ohio football team returns 15 of 25 starters from last year and was voted a unanimous pick to win the Mid-American Conference East Division title. But replacing the 10 starters lost will not be easy.

The Bobcats were hit hardest on offense with the loss of their top two receivers, both tackles and their starting running back. It is at the wide receiver spot where the lost where the production lost statistically seems most daunting.

ATHENS – Despite having three less captains this season that last year, the Ohio football team expects to have plenty of leaders.

The Bobcats named seven captains in 2011, but have given that honor to only four players this year.

However, the team has brought back the concept of the unity council, with representatives from each position group responsible to aid in team decisions.

After sitting out a transfer year from Iowa St., running back Beau Blankenship jumped right into the Ohio offense. Splitting time with Donte Harden and Ryan Boykin, he ran the ball 93 times for 462 yards (5.0 average) and four touchdowns. Ohio has received a verbal commitment from Martinsburg (WV) High School wide receiver Cedric Brown. The 6-3, 185-pounder chose Ohio over Marshall among other schools. Brown, who was a Class AAA first-team all-state selection this year, caught 57 passes for 846 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also intercepted three passes as one of Martinsburg's starting cornerbacks and had a punt-return touchdown. Martinsburg is the defending two-time Class AAA (big school) state champs in West Virginia.

Scout.com and the Cincinnati Enquirer are reporting that Clinton-Massie DE Trent Smart has committed to Ohio. The 6-4, 235-pounder chose Ohio over offers from Miami (OH) and Air Force. Smart recorded 12.5 sacks last season.
