All I can say is WOW..I'm pretty sure that he will go to osu BUT if he goes to Toledo I gotta say FAIL for our coaching staff on this one..maybe this will open eyes and our coaches can figure out what made toledo so attractive to this blue chipper..at least he visited Ohio..I like the kid a lot hopefully we don't have to face him for 4 years..he will run the MAC

I definitely wouldn't say it was a failure by our coaches if he chooses Toledo.  I mean you can't make a kid choose Ohio if he prefers somewhere else.  To be honest I kind of hope he does choose Toledo because the MAC could use some more blue chip players in this conference to make things super competitive on a conference and national level.  As much as I hate losing, I miss the days of superstar players like Roethlisberger, Leftwich, Nate Davis, Michael Turner, etc. showing their stuff in the MAC and to the country.  I think the MAC has missed that in recent years.  Whether it is football or basketball, the in and out of conference games are much more competitive and benefits attendance levels when there are great players to look forward to seeing.  In my opinion, watching Toledo stealing a kid like Cardale Jones from OSU and having him succeed there will only help our chances of landing a similar player like this in future.

There is a grades issue there, sounds like he wants to go the prep school route and enroll at OSU with the cupboard bare next season. Ohio is full at QB with 6 on the roster after signing Bell and Vick so no big loss here. I'd feel differently if the Cats were down to 2 scholarship QBs and desperate for a quality signee.

This reminds me a little of the Erick Howard (Mr. Football from North Canton) saga. He wanted to go OSU, then committed to Akron. Then he said he really wanted to go to OSU again, so he went to Fork Union and ditched Zippy. Then he quit football altogether while at FUMA. Hopefully the same fate doesn't await Mr. Jones.

I honestly hope it works out for him as much as for us. I've seen this record played, before, however--Buster Howe, Wiz White, Ray Williams. Long odds. Two years off the field without a solid academic background to fall back on. Best of luck, and hopefully he gets plenty of support if and when he makes it to campus.

Buster Howe. Another of my home town Z-ville studs that fell victim to the OSUcks old school reputation. I think he was the 1st Mr. Ohio in football? Went to clown town and was told he would be a D-back instead of a RB and could not handle the disappointment. May no kid (or his parents) fall victim to that fictitious promise.

And before you all throw stones, it's not just A&M. Many of the so-called powerhouse schools make the same promise for kids (see WVU).

Let me be sure I have this straight...

You're saying that Erick Howard (2 time Ohio Mr Football) is enrolled at Ohio's First & Finest and is intending to walk on in 2012??????

Two-time winner Erick Howard of North Canton Hoover wanted to go to Ohio State - and still does, according to Don Hertler, his former coach - but he didn't have a qualifying grade-point average.

He briefly enrolled at Akron, then at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy. But he left Fork Union last September, and his future is unclear.

Howard had academic eligibility issues and never made it to Akron. He was going to resolve those issues while at Akron and begin playing in 2011, but instead enrolled this summer at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, where he also is playing football for FUMA's post-graduate prep team. He had 14 carries for 71 yards in a recent win against Louisburg College. Presumably, if Howard gets his grades in order, he will try to play college football.

So it looks like he played in at least one game at Fort Union, then left school.

Why would he have to wait until 2012 ?

I believe he still hasn't fulfilled NCAA standards for freshman eligibilty. He can earn it at OU or elsewhere, but has to sit out one full academic year after he enrolls. Even if he enrolled today, he's have to sit out the 2011 season.

Yes he has submitted his application and his transcripts are all in. In speaking with him recently he wants to just be a regular college student..get his GPA up and live in Ping for a year while walking on in the future.

I'm fine with it. With Hammonds, Blankenship, and Howard in for 2012 the condition for the time being a the running back position is upgraded from critical to fair. Tim Edmonds and Kenny Ashley didn't pan out but Howard might and maybe it maybe it will only be for a year like Bassett but that is about as far as long range planning for the program can go at this point. The Roster will have to be reassessed by fall camp next year to see what the future needs are.

Boykin should still be there too.  He was a redshirt freshman this year.  That would be 4 nice backs.

That's funny. I have read at least 5 articles with quotes from different OSU football recruits. All say that Tressel rarely even talks about football and uses a soft-sell approach. For example, "we want you, but you need to go where you feel comfortable. We hope that place is Ohio State."

It actually drives OSU fans crazy.

John Cooper? No idea about him.
