If we lose this week, it's hard for me to see any promise for the rest of the season. Just a fact...in Year 14, you don't lose to an always-rebuilding Kent State program.
Can't say I disagree. This needs to be a pretty convincing win.

I know, I know, road game in conference, but we need to announce our presence with authority in this one.

That said, our division titles usually have a really inexplicable loss.
Riiight! Need to win BIG!!!. Style points matter in Ohio/Solich football. Really, since when?
Style points have nothing to do with it. It's showing that you're actually the MAC Champ favorite against a perpetual cellar dweller which seemingly always upsets Ohio somehow when they shouldn't. Please stop this charade. We need to win big for once against a team that is steps below us.
"We need to win big for once ...." Well last season , for one, was 48-3. Does that count?
Did that happen in 2018 when Ohio was declared the MAC favorite? No.
Have we played absolutely atrociously on defense in 2018 against two teams (Howard and UMass) who we shouldn't have? Yes.

Would be nice to hold a team to less than 30 points.

Yeah ... that sounds ridiculous ...
...

Nah, that's not a ridiculous goal. I honestly they they have a shot of doing it. I think Ohio will win, 42-28.

Vegas has Ohio winning by 13.5 and the over/under at 70. Solve for O and K:
O-K=13.5
O+K=70
so, O=K+13.5, meaning (K+13.5)+K=70, or 2K=56.5
So, K=28.25
meaning O=41.75

Ha! That's hilarious. That's exactly on my prediction, which I did before I looked up the spread and over/under.

Yes, Ohio has an excellent chance of holding Kent under 30.
L.C. Let bshot44 have his fun. Shaming a team/players is a time honored method of motivation by fans. When things get better we can remember these threads.
Oh ... let's be sure to pull out all of your gems!

Loved your disappearing act after that loss to Akron last year.

Sorry if facts get in the way of your cheerleading practice.

I can't help it that Ohio has let up 30+ 6 straight regular season games.

But you keep taking that high road. Leave us lesser fans down here to play in the reality mud.
I get it. The team continues to disappoint you. Got it. Last year's nine wins not enough. Still dragging baggage from Akron & Buffalo. Me, the two games I recall are Toledo and UAB. UAB, the game you choose to omit from your recent streak stats. Toledo, streak currently W2. Ohio is 2-2, streak W1, offense and QB set team/individual records. Competition was not good, but, records are never set against the best competition, they still count and are positive. If there is mud to be in it is because you left your own hose on all night to have it for yourself.

Is Kent State still more of a run first offense? That could hopefully play into the Cats favor some as passing teams have had the most success.

Granted they were gashed on some bad runs against UVA but as bad as the D has looked, they are at least statistically better against the run (379 vs. 161-wow that was hard to type!).

Interestingly enough they have better defensive stats on the road than at home!

Right now, I don't care about our margin of victory on this one. The three things I care about are: 1) Get the W, 2) Continued defensive improvement, 3) No major injuries.

My expectations are now much more grounded, and the MAC season gets harder from here.

Yes ... let's just omit losing the game that would've clinched the MAC East. Yup. Seems reasonable. Nine wins ... but lost the most important one with a championship on the line. Just dust that under the rug.

You're a full blown three ring circus act.

Facts are still facts, bud.

Ohio defense is no bueno. (That's Spanish for not good)

30+ points allowed in last 6 regular season games.

Hasn't happened in 30 years! Since the Cleve Bryant era.

1987-1988 Ohio lost

34-16 (EMU)
31-17 (CMU)
30-17 (BALL)
31-13 (WMU)
31-14 (MARSHALL)*
33-10 (PURDUE)*
*1988

2017-18 Ohio

37-34 (AKRON) L*
31-24 (BUFFALO) L*
38-32 (HOWARD) W
45-31 (UVA) L
34-30 (UC) L
58-42 (UMass) W
*2017

We are in a historic stretch of bad defense for Ohio.

But you keep pounding your drum about those wins over Toledo!

And please ... can we quit with the "they continue to disappoint you" rhetoric? It's garbage. I think it's safe to say this team, particularly this defense, has disappointed almost all Bobcat fans.

Except you, of course. You don't get disappointed in Ohio.

Frank Solich could come out and punt on first down every play and Ohio loses 67-0 but you'd respond with "Punter had a great day ... sorry the team continues to disappoint you"

This isn't about disappointing me ... it's about the facts that Ohio's defense is a serious mess right now. And if they don't get it figured out, they will be lucky to reach their mandated 7 or 8 wins.

Sorry to disappoint you with the truth.

Kent seems demoralized following a very difficult OOC schedule and a tough loss last week. I think they can go either way at this point. Step up and play hard or resign themselves to a long season.
Our offense can definitely score against them.

Our last four trips to Kent haven't been easy:

2016: Total Offense -- 335 yds (208 yds rushing); 2 lost fumbles, 1 INT, -3 TO margin; won 14-10 (Ohio led 14-0 halfway through the 2nd Q)

2014: Total Offense -- 437 yds (175 yds rushing); 4 lost fumbles, 0 INTs, -4 TO margin; won 17-14 (AJ made his debut off the bench in the final drive; Yaz kicked the winning FG as time expired)

2012: Total Offense -- 339 yds (107 yds rushing); 1 lost fumble, 1 INT, even TO margin; lost 28-6

2010: Total Offense -- 183 yds (50 yds rushing); 2 lost fumbles, 2 INTs, -4 TO margin; lost 28-6 (cost us the East title)

Avg total offense: 323.5 yds (135 yds rushing); 9 lost fumbles, 4 INTs, -11 TO margin; 2-2

Edit: OBTW, we've scored a total of 43 pts in the last four games up there.

Think I posted something similar after I looked back at this series.

You're right ... for whatever reason Frank just struggles a little putting Kent away. They've won four straight .... but he was 4-5 against them before that.

Maybe most surprising thing to me is Vegas setting over/under at 71.

Highest it's been in last 10 years is 59 (in 2012 when Kent was loaded)

More indication that OUr defense has work to do. I think LC said it ... Vegas projecting at 42-28 kind of game.

I'd like to see that ... means offense is clicking and defense would finally hold someone under 30.

We haven't had a lot of discussion of Sean Lewis. He is the new head coach for Kent State. As a result, even though some of the players will be the same, since the coaches have changed, the offense and defense will be different this year. Prior to becoming the Head Coach at Kent State, he was an offensive assistant coach under Dino Babers, so we can expect a fast paced offense.

I agree and believe that if we can come our quickly and take at least a 2 TD lead in the 1st quarter that Kent will be demoralized after these past few games. I also think this will lead us to cause them to have a few turnovers as they attempt to press to make a comeback.

I'm interested in how you know that Kent players seem demoralized. I'm impressed with their coach and doubt they'll be downtrodden for their homecoming game. Based on our defense, they might see a good chance at victory.

Some things to keep an eye on

Under Frank Solich:

Opponent Scores First: 33-51
Opponent Leads after 1Q: 17-44
Opponent Leads at Half: 10-56

Ohio scores first: 64-20
Ohio leads after 1Q: 61-14
Ohio leads at half: 83-10
Ohio commits less turnovers: 59-16
Ohio has more time of possession: 61-26

Bottom line ... Ohio has to start fast, hold onto the ball and control the clock. All common threads of successful Ohio football under Solich.

If Kent starts fast and grabs an early lead .... buckle up. It could be a bumpy ride.

This is a new Kent program and I'm sure they've seen everyone else torch OUr defense and they'd love to steal a MAC win here ... might be one of their best shots.

What would be good to know is college football averages for those stats. Then we could see if Solich has performed better or worse.
