I agree with Ohio Pilot period.

Because society is in a "POLITICALLY CORRECT" period of our history we all should be more careful about what we say, as there are always people that will interpret what ever is said in a manner that will be controversal.

At the end of the day it's always best to say the least.

Personally I don't believe that there should be any action taken in this case other than for the coach to make this a teaching moment for the team.

1. What Paul Hersey tweeted is inexcusable for the university and the Ohio football team. Agree.

2. What Paul Hersey tweeted is completely right for the following:
-Some of the football team and players who get to spend a week (or a bit shorter) in Boise.
-Alumni and fans who will not shell out the bucks to go to Boise in December.

But doesn't this whole thing elevate the thinking that there are just too many bowl games and really not enough interest to keep any of these things afloat? Come on...the majority of these bowl games are absolute garbage. Puke. If I wasn't an Ohio fan, ours would be up there in the puke factor. Ohio vs. Utah State? Yikes! Think about that one...allow it to sink it...

Plus, this is more proof that Div I FBS football is, by year's end, a giant fraud. WMU gets Detroit against a Big Ten team? Ohio State goes to the Gator Bowl because they're guaranteed to bring their rabid fans? The BCS title game is a rematch of a game already played between a team that won it's conference and a team that couldn't win it's own division? Not that I care much about the outcome and I don't have a favorite in the race, but Oklahoma State had one glorious loss...on the road...on a week night. This seems more an indictment on Iowa State than anything else.

I'm sorry, but I get myself roped in every fall into following college football, but by the time the bowl season comes around, I feel like garbage because the end result is so garbage. I feel cheated....

...a lot like Mr. Hersey...

Think how long this thread would be if Hershey had said something really controversial, like: "In the cold weather in Idaho they better have shuttle buses between the hotel and the stadium, or I'm not going."

BTW, my wife had Paul Hershey as a student and says he was a good student and had a good attitude in class.

Exactly how I feel. Ohio State was a hail mary away from not even being bowl eligible, and they get the Gator Bowl? (Yes I know this could be spun the other way and say that they were a blocked extra point away from beating Purdue).

Michigan State wins their division, loses in the B1G championship and drops back to the Outback Bowl, while Michigan sits idle last weekend and gets the Sugar Bowl.  This situation is similar to ours.  By winning the division and losing the championship game, you actually end up in a worse bowl than if you would have just stayed home on championship weekend.

And don't even get me started on the BCS rematch.  Especially when some 80-year-old Harris poll voter places OK State at #6 and Houston at #5 in his final poll.

Occasionally, Mr. Rob Oller, Dispatch columnist, makes an incredible amount of sense of a stupid situation.  This is one of those occasions.

The problem is that Mr. Oller assumes I'm frustrated over the rematch just because it's a rematch...when I'm not.

From the column:
"And yet how can proponents of a playoff argue that, to make things more interesting, LSU should play No. 3 Oklahoma State instead of No. 2 Alabama? If/when a playoff system arrives, rematches will happen all over the place. If two teams playing twice in the same season — or three times, if a conference championship game is involved — bothers you, especially if the second or third meeting happens in the national title game, then you might want to rethink your pro-playoff position."

My problem is the process. I understand and accept that a rematch is possible. However, the process is so arbitrary and lacks any sort of transparency. I cannot see the logic in avoiding a December college football playoff. 16 teams, automatic qualifiers from every DI (current FBS Conf), the rest at-large teams make up the rest. I don't want to hear about finals or any other crap. Those in power don't care about the student athlete when they join conferences that span the nation, they cannot convince they have the student athlete's best interest during finals. Either make it work or count me out.

I'm sorry, but this whole system is so tangled and screwed up that NOT having a playoff is the dumbest...absolute DUMBEST system in sports. Personally, remembering the stupidity of the system has lessened Friday's loss to me.

Mr. Hershey's performance has been less than stellar in recent weeks. He needs to keep his mouth shut.

Because you can only have an opinion when you're playing well.

No, but at the same time his shank had a direct impact on why he is going to play in Idaho in December.
Works both ways, just as easy to say he has had a direct impact on why we were in the MAC Championship and are going to a bowl in the first place.

What he said is true, it is obvious from this board that most agree with the sentiment, as I don't see nearly the people clamoring to make the trip as we have in recent years, and it sheds light on the question of why we (the MAC) have an agreement with them. Obviously, the answer seems to be that we have no other options, and neither did the game.

Hershey's only error here is that he put the comment on a public-facing account in an era where such things can blow up. When it is the 110 and black jerseys, it is great. Rufus on Brutus and this, not so much.
This is exactly right. My problem is not with what Paul Hershey said. I absolutely agree with the guy! My only issue with the statement was that he said it in a public forum where someone will try to use it against Ohio in some form or fashion.

Hershey plays football whenever and wherever the hell Frank Solich tells him to play.  Period.

We are lucky this bowl exists.  And we are lucky to be invited.  Used to be a lot less bowls and none for MAC teams.

The Potato Bowl was desperate so they offered the MAC a huge chunk of change to play there. That is why the MAC agreed to it because of the financial terms. Ohio is going to make money on this game because of it even if it doesn't sell a ticket.

My goodness, people. If you don't like Twitter, don't involve yourself in it. It's pretty easy.

Also: This is a non-story. Paul never said he wasn't going to play. Headlines like "ripping the state of Idaho" is ridiculous and irresponsible. He said something mildly abrasive in the aftermath of what was probably the most upsetting experience of his sporting career, if not his life. That strikes me as an incredibly natural reaction.

And I won't advocate for sanitizing our athletes. As long as they're not tweeting about failing tests or drunkenly stealing bikes, we shouldn't scrutinize everything they say. Doing so probably alienates them.

shame on Paul, this is terrible.

now I admit I don't follow college sports too carefully but I bet this has got to be one of the most embarassing things to happen to a program this year.

If Paul did one of the most embarrassing things in our program this year we are doing great. It could be far worse:

Twitter does not equal the Internet does not equal Twitter. Twitter is about some kind of instant gratification and amateur content provision that would rarely be attractive, and it's limited to a hundred and something characters. Also, while I think it's possible to use a land line with it, it's clearly tied to microwave-based transmission systems. Major differences.

A non-story? Why was it up all day yesterday on Yahoo? And why were there 500+ comments; many derogatory towards Hershey and Ohio?

Had he THOUGHT before he "spoke" he'd not have made an a$$ of himself. He clearly stated  "“Idaho?? Who the f*** wants to play there in December??” he tweeted Sunday".  Someone new will be punting next year so I say get them started in Boise.

Google Paul Hershey and Ohio U and see how many hits you get.
