Let me guess, Ashland Oil?  Or, maybe, Marathon?

Marathon is a featured company in the quarterly job fair. This entire "not hiring OHIO grads" thing sounds ridiculous.

I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile, and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

I think it's important that we know who it is because they are apparently recruiting kids in high school before they even choose a college.  That is one forward thinking business and one that I want to put on my stock watch list.  Incredibly efficient.

I certainly hope this doesn't happen.  The parade belongs on Court St.  No matter what happens with the route, it's not going to change behaviors of individuals.  Instead of changing the route, educate people on the acceptable behavior at the parade -- i.e. not running into the street, maybe eliminate candy throwing in the areas of most congestion, etc.

This is my main point.  No matter what the school does, the bars are going to open at the crack of dawn and people are going to visit them.  The Union street bars will see an uptick, but the focal point will still be on Court.  Moving the parade just kills the atmosphere.

Back in the day, the parade went down College Street, not Court Street.  But, of course, the floats were drawn by horses not motorized vehicles!

That would be better than the proposed route.  At least that is near the majority of off-campus housing.  Union is no-mans land.

Just had "dinner" at Larry's and drove up Union to Court.  What a depressing route for the parade.  If the powers that be are worried about overcrowded sidewalks, the Union Street sidewalks are much more narrow than Court Street.  All this is going to do is press more people into a smaller area.  Absolutely stupid idea.

I don't think overcrowded sidewalks is a worry at all.  Its gotta be they want to get away from the drunk idiots around the bars.  When you have drunk idiot students yelling USA-USA at international students and scaring off past parade participants, you have a big, big problem.

I think they should just get rid of the parade altogher and just have a concert for the alumni band and Marching 110.

One look at the floats by students tells you they don't give a crap about the parade anyway.

The crowded sidewalks is one of the main things that the city council members have cited.  As for the USA cheers, I'm not sure how you deal with idiots.  The new route will pass six bars (I forgot about the union last time) and through what amounts to an industrial zone.  Make the float prize meaningful and you'll get better floats.  And finally, get the darn politicans out of the parade.  I'd boo some of them too!  Oh, and did I mention the candy.

This new route to its credit is going to be good from a parking perspective with the CDL center located right across the street and I like how the parade ascends up Union St. I guess the solution to the Kegs and Eggs issue is to have the bars on Union Street to open up at 7 am which might attract a nice crowd but not on the level of what you find uptown. The net effect might be room for a louder but less rowdy crowd. The route they are proposing is a quarter of a mile longer than the previous route.

Why wouldn't the union bars just open at 5, or whenever the court street bars currently open?

New route confirmed.  Breaking a great event.

Some Thoughts:
-I bet the Court Street section is still packed, rowdy, and unsafe. Possibly even worse with less area near the bars which will still open early.
-110 will love marching up Union Street
-Who is the Smiling Skull owner connected with at OU?
-Paul Weihl is a joke.

My last comment on this issue with all bias and politics aside; logically and logistically... if one held a parade in Athens, Ohio... where would you want to see it?

You didn't march in the 110 then, eh?  That's going to suck.   The alumni band is expecting a record attendance this year to honor Mr. Socciarelli.  They already have about 350 on average, may be well over 400.

Union has two bends one down by depot street and the other before congress...the alumni band will be winding around bends, up hill, so doubt they'll be playing there.  Then when the back of the band finally comes around the bend by Congress, the front will be making turn on court street...then when back of the band is finally on court street, the front of the band will be arriving at Baker for the chart.

Making the turn on court street while marching in the alumni band and seeing college students lining the bricks is always a highlight of my weekend...yeah...a few 19 year-old drunk males try to throw candy into the tuba bells thinking they've invented a new beer pong game...but the drunk college girls spilling into the street cheering us alumni on like we're old rock stars was always well received :-).

I really think they've made the problem worse.  In their simple minds, they think spectators are going to line west union down by the depot area and then line Park Place/College Terrace down to Ping Center.  Noone's going to walk to those locations to see the parade...their going to squeeze more people and more congestion between Congress on Union and around the corner to Baker...the problem will be at the least, as bad...and very likely worse.

So...we have all these people over about five blocks squeezing into about 2 blocks...brilliant.

I can also imagine people staying in the Court Street bars and skipping the parade altogether.

Or even worse, having their own version of an alternate Homecoming doo dah parade down Court Street.

I think they are also discounting the fact that last year's parade started 1 hour later than normal...giving a little more time for the crowd to expand and get lubed.

Couldn't city council have passed a "no alcohol sales until 11am" law to circumvent the perceived problem?

HAHAHAHAHAHA, that wouldn't have circumvented the problem. At most it would have moved the drinking out of the bars and into private houses and/or hotel rooms (and along with it the  revenue)

Which is the thing....if excessive drinking is the residents'/city council's concern, the parade ROUTE is not the issue. All the change does on that front is move the line-up out of residential neighborhoods. The same effect could have been accomplished by doing line-up at the intramural fields and taking the parade up Mill Street (maybe the hill up Mill Street is too steep....but I don't think it's any worse that going up Union....).

People are still going to get hammered and go to the parade, but there will be even less segregation now that there was, because everyone is going to jam Court from Union to Baker Center.
