An ad hoc committee has recommended a new parade route to avoid the kegs and eggs.  If approved, it will start at the corner of Factory and Union, travel up Union past the Cats Den, the Skull, BW3's and Jacki O's, make a right on Court and then a left n front of Baker.

I guess the folks in 69's neighborhood will get to sleep in on Homecoming Saturday since that east side neighborhood will no longer be the staging ground for the parade.

Terrible idea.  The Homecoming parade always belongs on Court St.  This is a childish solution to something that is not even a problem.  If they want to stop underage consumption that weekend, go to the Greek houses that morning, not Court St.

It's clear when it comes to the issue of rowdy behavior and alcohol Dr. McDavis has an unbending position.  It's widely believed that the selective selling of beer at Peden and the Convo was cancelled because of the prez's reaction to the PalmerFest idiocy.  Personally, I think it's a little bit of an overreaction, but I'm not the man in charge.  I wonder if Rod had an experience during his college years where a classmate was killed or seriously injured in an alcohol-related incident.  I just get a sense that there's something very personal about the way he reacts to these situations.  I'm not saying he's wrong in what he's doing, but it does seem that at least part of his response has a very emotional tone to it.

There have been complaints by people in the parade of being touched by parade viewers the last couple of years.  Brom Broney's to just past the J-Bar has been very crowded and rowdy.  I never saw anything but a few people in my group said they were touched/grabed.  I've heard rumors that high school bands were not coming anymore due to the rowdy behavior but I do not know this for sure.  Anyone with a kid in a local high school band?  It was always nice to see them here before.

The route has been moved before for behavior and it probably will move again.

This is going to accomplish very little. People who want to drink at the bars during the parade will stay in the bars and continue to not be able to see the parade. People who want to go to the parade hammered will continue to drink at a house at 5 a.m. and then go to the parade.

I guess it does keep the lineup out of residential neighborhoods, but that might be about it.

Might give an early boost to the Union St. bar's receipts on the day. Were members of the ad hoc committee checked for conflicts of interest (or bribes) in case of undue "Union Street bar" influence?  (no one get upset, that's a joke)

Well, I guess I can see how people make the connection but my understanding is Palmerfest had nothing to do with it.

The students are too drunk and too rude on the homecoming route.  Hundreds and hundreds of dummies on this campus right now.  Its quite depressing actually.

What disturbs me more than anything is when I hear that prominent companies will not hire Ohio grads!  I just heard that a week ago that a prominent business (oil company) will not hire Ohio graduates.  They told a potential student not to enroll if they wanted a chance to be hired.  Hence, they are going to Tosu.   If all the publicity from all the fun is getting us to that point then I am for a big crackdown on happenings such as Palmerfest, etc.  All I've heard about that incident is how there was a riot, an arson, 38 arrests, 9 citations, etc.  People can't wait to drill me with anything negative coming out of Athens!  I'm getting tired of trying to back up Ohio University time after time.  Almost makes me want to distance myself!

Not that it's right but it's not just OU.

If a company is going to make a blanket statement like that I'd never even consider taking a job there, what a narrow-minded environment.  Also, wouldn't that be considered profiling and violate equal opportunity employment?  I'm having a hard time putting into words just how ignorant that is.  My degree having "The Ohio University" on it has never been anything but a positive with all prospective employers who recruited me out of college and I emerged with a Masters Degree from the Mechanical Engineering department immediately following the "scandal" there.  I never even fielded a question about that issue and I was offered a job with every interview I took after graduation.

Being successful is entirely about the individual and their abilities, whatever they may be.

My take is the party scene is no bigger now than it was in the 90's (my older brother's years) or the 2000's (my years).  The way that same partying is readily available for public consumption to those outside of the party is much different (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc.).  I completely agree it (partying) should be monitored but I don't see any reason for sweeping changes.  We've seen time and time again the majority of problems occur with people not enrolled at Ohio, so why punish the people who can do it responsibly?

I partied every chance I had in college during both undergrad and graduate school and encourage every college kid I know to do the same as long as they can keep up with their studies, which is always priority #1.  Why not?  Live it up while you have the chance, you probably only get to do this once.  I learned as much to further my career and life out of the classroom as I did in it.  I'll forever cherish the memories of those weekend nights and sadly enough I've already forgotten what I learned in the classroom on most days.

Wrong thinking.  Reasons: Pride; it's one morning; tradition; it's unique; attractiveness; and finally $$, to Athens, to OU, to the future.

Come off it. News flash, no one with half a brain thinks that way. I wouldn't want to work for that company anyway.

Drinking and unruly behavior happens everywhere. It happens at Delaware. It happens at Maryland. It happens at Rutgers. It happens at Penn State. It happens at Penn (the freakin' Ivy League for christsake). And yes, it happens at Ohio University.

NO ONE, I have ever met has thought less of me because my degree came from Ohio University and multiple friends that I've taken to visit have said "I wish I went to school here." My friend told me the other day that he was envious of our camaraderie and pride in our school. There is much more good about Ohio University circulating out there than bad.

No one in this area even knows what Palmer Fest is, but I've met people who know about Scripps, people who know about our business school, our engineering school, our famous alumni,  our Sweet Sixteen run, and our football team that has been on a role.

Ok, I'm done ranting.

Here's my take on the whole thing.  You have some new members of council one of whom lives in an "if only the world was as wonderful as I am environment" who would want to call a parent meeting to institute no running on the playground because their kid got accidentally knocked down by another preschooler.   Combine that with another member who wants to take the flouride out of the city water supply and you get an idea of what we're dealing with on the current council and administration.

For the past three years, we've gathered at a friend's house on Ohio Avenue for breakfast and then walked the parade route from the beginning to Baker Center with the 110.  Yes, the sidewalks are crowded and yes there has been lots of drinking.  Are there people in the street?  Absolutely but believe it or not, many of them are small children and their parents scrambling for the candy that so may parade units are throwing into the crowd.

Here is a simple way to address many of these problems.  One, put up snow fencing or some sort of buffer between the spectators and Court Street from Carpenter Street to Union Street.  Two, stop passing out candy which will in turn keep the small kids and their parents out of the street.  In the past few years, I've seen more than one little one almost get run over by a car and stepped on by a horse.  And three, just like has happened for Halloween, develop and deliver educational programs that address appropriate and inappropriate behavior along the parade route.  This is an educational institution.  Hiding the liquor in a new cabinet which moving the parade route is an attempt to do, doesn't address the real issue.

Homecoming is loved by recent alums and is definitely OU's best shot at encouraging recent alumni to donate.  Nothing Ohio University does is going to change people's behavior, a lot of things Ohio University does might anger people who could be opening up their wallets.  The city doesn't have OU's best interest at heart, especially in this case.

I  would like to know which Oil company said this. I for one and I'm sure every other Ohio graduate out there would never do business with them again.
