Is the committee that made this recommendation really this clueless as to what students and alums are going to do now?  If you think the majority of people who lined Court Street in years past are looking to line Station Street you are out of touch.  When was the last time they walked that hill?  The 110 is used to marching, the rest of the parade won't be nearly as ready..

Am I missing something? Is Ohio looking to do away with the parade completely? They could do that with much less fanfare after the parade flops this year.  That would be a shame.

Okay one last comment.... How can having hundreds of kids, students, community members aboard flimsy floats stopping and starting up the Union Hill be safe?  I could see something horrible come from this and who would take responsibility then?

I will start of by saying this, I never actually made it to the parade during my time in Athens. From the Athens News article, it mentions the previous parade route would dissipate near the CONVO leading me to believe that it went down Richland Avenue after leaving Court Street.   Is this correct?

I think that it is worth noting that the route down the hill on University Terrace is more treacherous than going up Union Street.  For those not familiar with University Terrace, it's comes off the same hill that is behind the new Baker Center.  However, this part of the hill has no escalators.

I was in the parade twice in the early 00's. If I remember correctly, we turned left onto Union, passed in front of Old Baker, then right on University Terrace, down the hill to Clippinger, and the parade dissipated on South Green Drive. I know we never went down Richland, and I don't think we ever turned right onto South Green Drive and headed to the Convo, but maybe we were supposed to and just didn't.

The past couple years it has gone all the way down Court and turned left at the new Baker Center. It went down the street where Alden is (Park Place?). I think it then turned right onto University Terrace and ended shortly after.

I hate over-reactive boards that do something just to do something (Alan's banning running on the playground because a kid scraped a knee is a good one)....But in the end, this doesn't bother me much.
  • The parade will still be the parade...I (and most others) won't care what is surrounding them.
  • The 110 and the 110 alums might have sore quads on Sunday, but they will be fine.
  • I do think the majority of the heavy morning drinking occurs on North Court St (Pub, Pawpurs, Cat's Eye, Pigskin, etc.) and I think drunk students/alums stumbled out the door a few feet when they heard all the commotion, and now that it is a couple blocks away, they won't bother.  Not that I care much at all, but I think it will reduce the amount of drunk people at the parade, which sounds like is their goal.  I don't think the Union Street bars will have as much of that same crowd.
  • Court Street from Union to Park Pl and Park Place over to University Terrace are untouchable because they are beautiful signature areas of the campus, and those parts have remained in tact.
  • University Terrace down the hill actually sounds like a pretty cool spot to watch...that might be where I target next year.
  • Our campus is awesome no matter where you are...they could come up with about 100 different routes and I'd be happy to take my kids to the parade on any of them to show them how awesome the campus is.
  • In 3 years, this will be the norm and everything will be fine.
Think about it this way...if you throw a big hissy fit about this and over-react, you are just acting like the very people you are mad at.
