The sad thing is if we had actually somehow beaten them then that photo would become a new "defeat" pic to pass around the internet. lol

Here we are talking about Rufus, but missed the part where Brutus was actually Forrest Gump:

To quote his message today...

" After the first two OSU touchdowns I decided to exact my revenge with a little more class by waving the flag directly in his face and repeatedly pointing to the scoreboard.....and that's all I have to say about that."

"It was actually my whole plan to tackle Brutus when I tried out to be mascot," said Brandon Hanning, formerly known as Ohio University's Rufus Bobcat. "I tried out about a year ago, and the whole reason I tried out was so I could come up here to Ohio State and tackle Brutus."

so when does the movie come out?

Back in the days when there was a gravel track around a grass field in Peden we expected such things from Mr. Bobcat. If he didn't take down the other team's mascot we felt cheated because that would be the game highlight. My favorite was the Toledo Rocket Tube. He looked like a blue and gold waterbug on his back kicking his legs in the air in the end zone when "Victory Hill" was only a field of weeds. Oh, and the 110 was very good then and the football then, not so much. Some things just don't change. What has changed is how our student-athletes and coaching staff now tend to make the news. That's something that really is an embaracement to the university; this mascot thing is just another bump in the road by another pseudo-student a-hole. The defeat Saturday was humbling if not humiliating as I had hoped for more this year, not more like the old days. On to Huntington where the 0 and 3 Herd is expecting the Bobcats to hand them win #1. Will this weeks's Rufus be allowed on the sideline? I'll be there to find out for myself because I will always be a Bobcat fan. One thing does concern me: if this guy planned this poor tackle for over a year what else does he have on his list yet to fullfill? Has he written a manifesto?

The story and video were shown a few minutes ago on Cleveland's ABC as the lead-in "teaser" for the 11 o'clock news.  Footage, at 11.

Assuming the Bobcat is a member of the cheer squad, check this out, especailly page 7 where permission is given to verify enrollment status.  Oops!

The cynic in me says the AD had 850,000 future reasons to apologize.

What gets me about the whole thing is that kid isn't even an OU student.  I know that it's hard to keep tabs on who's still registered for classes, but this guy dropped out last year.  You'd think someone in the athuletics dept would want to make sure that the mascot represents the university and the student body.  Back in the day, that was assured by having the mascot chosen from among the dorms each year.

i'm pretty sure rufus is considered a part of the cheer squad, which means the cheer coach should be on top of the situation. can you honestly say that if you had someone working in your office and you were in charge you wouldn't know whether they actually worked there. heads should roll.

The cheerleading squad and coach has nothing to do with Rufus, even though it would make sense.  He doesn't even ride on the same bus to the away games. (The bobcat doesn't even go to most away games, the only one I can remember Rufus attending was the Miami game in 04).

We had nothing to do with his try-out, selection, interviewing, training, conditioning, or anything else for that matter.

The only interaction I had with whoever was inside the bobcat would usually happen during the MAC bball tourney in Cleveland and the MAC Champ game in Detriot and the bowl games.

I have no idea who's responsibility Rufus (and the student inside of his) is, but it is not that of the Cheer Coach's.

Edit to add:

Now that I've actually watched the video, it amazes me that not a single person even seems to bat an eyelash during the whole ordeal, from the guy helping Brutus running the flag, to the football team kneeling in the endzone as Rufus and Brutus roll around on the ground.

Not saying I think it was a great move, but it's probably one of the more ballsy things I have ever witnessed.  I've pushed my share of mascotts in my day, but never have I once thought about tackling him as he ran the football team into the stadium.

Rufus is handled by the marketing department, and very loosely at that.  Rufus has been double booked for events and I've gotten phone calls an hour before a game starts asking if I can do it.

So, no, they're not going to check if he's a student because it's way down on their list of priorities.  Usually, an intern is handling it.  And Brandon kind of got lucky he was even in that position; they seem to pick people at random for games.  I bet he requested it over and over.

Wow, Rufus has gone from creepy and awkward to Legendary in my book.  Some of you need to lighten up a bit.  We are getting a ton of PR for this as I've seen it everywhere you can imagine on TV and the web.  Not bad PR...People are enjoying it. Nobody on the outside even cares if this guy went to OU or not. I love it, because I know those bucknuts take Brutus seriously and have some weird obsession with him.  Are you really worried this is going to reflect badly on our university?  These are mascots!  They are meant to entertain and so what if Rufus took it a step further.  If anything, it's a statement to everyone that maybe not all of us aren't so fond of Ohio State like everybody in this state automatically thinks we should be.

This situation now has me a bit torn. On one hand this makes the university look bad which is quite embarrassing.

On the other hand, we have pictures like these of which I can't look at and hold a straight face.

Hammer, meet nail. Seems to me that we're seeing a lot of other fan bases line up and say watching OSU get knocked down a peg like that was pretty funny.

When this video first came out I was much closer to JCW's camp of stupidity/embarrassment. As the story runs through the media though they're not running it from a "look at the jerks from OU" angle. It's been more of an irreverent "haha, funny mascots!" story. Some of the weird things of the story like this kid coming out and saying that he's been planning this for a year, and it's the only reason he ever tried out in the first place have certainly helped that.

So we probably lucked out on the way that the media chose to spin this, but I'll take it. If nothing else the story is no longer about how our football team was destroyed on the field.

Should be fun when the media learns the idiot in the suit wasn't even a student! How does that happen? Does the University think so little of the mascot and tradition that any knucklehead can put on the suit?

I think it makes us look "bush league" and small time. If you're going to play with the big boys then act like it. It's no wonder the likes of OSU wants nothing to do with us when we show up and act like a bunch of rednecks.

I'm with you C Money.  Can't believe OSU fans are on our site about this mascot thing and the news in Columbus is blowing up about it.  Guess nothing can ever happen to them without crying about it.  Time to get over it and move on.

Have you ever talked to the average OSU fan (note I said FAN, not GRAD or ALUM, as the majority of their fans have never had any affiliation with the univesity)? If they decided to describe us as rednecks it would be a huge case of the Pot calling the Kettle black.

At Ohio University the mascot is NOT supervised by the cheer program.  It is supervised by the Marketing Department.  The cheer team is always very respectful and professional.  The cheer team works hard and is held to all of the same standards as all student athletes.  The cheerleaders are held to strict rules and are awesome ambassadors for the Univeristy.  Please do not tarnish the cheerleaders reputation, as this had nothing to do with the cheer team or coaching staff.

Okay... it's still kinda embarrassing but it's also kinda funny. I can't believe how much news play it's getting.

The picture of Rufus punching the bucknut in the chops just cracks me up. I can't help it.

So I'm not sure how I feel about "The Incident" anymore, but I hope we have an actual OHIO student ready to put that suit on for the next game.

Take another look...Somehow, magically, the always smiling Brutus mask appears to be frowning, while the Rufus mask has an extra evil look to it.  I think there is a higher power involved here.

They say a picture says 1,000 words.  Well to me, this says "Yeah you guys are really good at football and you kicked our ass...But you're still a bunch of pricks that nobody can't stand.  We at Ohio like ot have a good time, and we aren't too fond of you."
