If your going to tackle a giant walking nut, make sure you actually tackle it.  Brandon should have trained harder.

Getting emails from friends and acquaintances now...

I'm getting about the same amount of correspondence as seen during the Georgetown win. Of course, those emails were congratulatory. These Rufus ones mock our university.

A mockery. That's what we are today. But I guess it's just a case of mascots being mascots.

Quick, someone verbally accost some OSU motorists to remedy this situation... let's feel good about ourselves again!

Sorry...I stopped being embarrassed by this.

It is pure awesome.

Agreed, the more times i see it, the better it gets.  For a college prank, it's priceless.  Especially after reading the best article about it yet.

i'm pretty sure rufus is considered a part of the cheer squad, which means the cheer coach should be on top of the situation. can you honestly say that if you had someone working in your office and you were in charge you wouldn't know whether they actually worked there.

don't tell me you wouldn't have your feet held to the fire. how can we have someone who has not true affiliation with the university be representing the bobcats in one of the more visable jobs.

a total screw-up in my opinion of the highest (or lowest) level.

heads should roll.

this whole mascot fiasco is wrong on so many levels. And how fitting that he's not even a student at OU. What percentage of people arrested during Halloween, and Palmerfest, etc. aren't OU students either? 80% 90%? And yet it's always assumed that they go to school in Athens when they don't, but OHIO gets the bad press for it anyways. I'd like to kick that reject square in his catnuts.

and now my 2 cents on the band conversation-

please OHIO, let's have some class. This is one area where we legitimately have one of the top marching bands in the country, there's no need to try to put down other programs. In the marching band world there are two different types of bands- show, and corps. The 110 is a show style band as noted by their contemporary music selections, their dance numbers, and their relatively simplistic marching formations. OSU is rooted in corps, with more of a traditional military style than a modern competitive drum and bugle corps style. It's apples and oranges. As someone who grew up in the corps world and had to learn to love show style for what it is, and not compare the two, I'll say there are merits, and short comings of both. Embrace them for what they are, not for what they aren't.

We don't have to be so damn insecure about this one, let's be gracious, inclusive and welcoming of our band brothern from A&M. We look petty and petulant when we try to compare the two. Our football team last year was good, but only relatively speaking, for a MAC team. Every year the 110 is one of the best in the country, of any conference. Relax.

Besides, they can't claim to be the best until they learn script "state".

I, for one, think this is awesome and just about everybody I've talked to thinks so too. The stupid buckeye didn't get hurt, he even chuckled about it. It was mascot antics. Today on ESPN they were talking about it and then proceeded to show some REAL mascot fights. Pulling someone's head off and punching them is classless, jumping on their back and throwing some soft jabs is funny.

Played it before our managers meeting today. Received high fives and a standing "o" from the Texas and Texas A&M folks. Let's bring him back for a chicken hawk attack

Please..... There's no way any heads should roll based on the ridiculous decisions of a 19 year old kid.  Especially one who has apparently been lying for a year or more about his motives... I don't see how there's any way that anyone could have seen this coming...

The episode keeps getting more national pub:  it was featured on the "C'Mon Man" piece during the pre-game MNF show on ESPN.  Wow.

His facebook page is making circles here in New England. My friends are now impressed that I don't wear cargo shorts and sleeveless shirts.

I'd say he'd pass up the Great Lakes. He looks like more of an Old Milwaukee kind of guy.

The best thing about this is the guy had been planning it for a year. He goes through a full year of practice, workouts, events and obligations, all knowing that on Sept. 18, 2010, he is going to go down in a blaze of glory.

Classic.

This is the part that has me in tears with laughter over this thing.  You can't make this stuff up.  Hilarious.

I have no problem with it.  Remember a member of the Crazy Cats taking a flag and jousting with the Miami basketball team.

As far as publicity, the average sports fan tuning into ESPN, etc. is only going to remember the bucknut getting tackled by the Ohio mascot, they will not register if he is a student or not (he should be).

You pretty much nailed it 82.  Just like players eligibility is checked, so too should the cheer squad and especially it's most visible and recognizeable member.  That said, I was watching the pregame to MNF is a restaurant in High Point, NC, tonight and the whole place was cracking up and pointing to the screen.  Coincidentally I had on an OU shirt so needless to say, there was much discussion.  And like someone posted earlier, the emails starting coming in this afternoon like they did after the Georgetown game.  My guess is that non-OU folks will remember this event for a much longer time than they will the basketball game.

Wonder what's next for Rufus tryouts. Background checks? Psych tests?

Questionnaire:  Please describe why you would like to be Rufus.
A. I noticed we have Wisconsin on the schedule in two years. I hate Bucky Badger and want to kick him in his stupid teeth.

APPLICANT DENIED!

Or maybe, just maybe, crazy mascots could be our thing, like the party school thing.

No. You just have to look at this picture to see how appalling it is.

Appalling.

Now one more time.

Just embarrassing.

Now, can we see it one more time to see just how pathetic this is.

(The best part of the picture are all the OSU players bowed in what is ostensibly prayer while all this is going on.)

I've stayed out of this conversation so far, other than a couple smart ass comments, since that's what I do best, but allow me to make a serious observation regarding what is being said here and elsewhere on the Internets: we have touched a nerve. If it really was enough for osu to beat us on the field, the reply to everything would just be "43-7."

But here they are not talking about the game, but about our mascot and our band, and how we didn't actually get the best of them in those areas, you see, because, well, hey, they're osu and that means they're awesome. I mean, just inherently, in everything they do. Pure, unadulterated sweetness. Because they're osu. So they're totally awesome. At everything. I mean, totally. Awesome. Everything. osu.

This just screams insecurity to me.

Guys from osu, be happy with what you are. That dude in the giant cat outfit? He dropped out of OU last year. Truth be told, he probably never had any business being in OUr school. Yes, I know Brutus was embarrassed for a solid 30 seconds. But everytime this guy applies for a job, for the rest of his life, they're going to do a Google search, and it's going to pop up that he embarrassed himself by doing what he did. However it was that he managed to keep the mascot job, he doesn't have it any more. The matter has been handled. Time to move on. Also, you are not Brutus. Don't take what happened so personally.

And your band is good at what it is. Disciplined, yes. Regimented, yes. Impressive, yes. Be proud of that. Now, is it entertaining like the 110? Absolutely not. That's OK, though. You don't have to be entertaining like the 110. Just be proud that you guys march in straight lines and play your sheet music precisely. We got the funk, and we like that. You guys have a guy in a big white hat that can bend over backwards really far and twirl a baton. That's cool too, if you're into that sort of thing. We're not, but you guys are. So rock on.

Thanks for stopping by. Next time, bring a case of beer, and there will probably be much less hostility.  Also, let Brutus know that if he's got sore ribs or a bruised ego, I'll buy him a Labbatt at Cat's Eye if it will make him feel better. And if it doesn't, well, then there's no hope for him anyway.

There is no such thing as bad publicity.

Outside Ohio I run into people every day who can NOT, for the life of them, understand that the school I attended is not Miami University or Ohio State.  They get confused all the time.  The win over Georgetown helped a lot- but Rufus tackling Brutus as the Buckeye football team runs out onto the hallowed turf of Ohio Stadium is nothing short of memorable.  It runs the risk of being played again next year, or on blooper reels...etc.

Now don't get me wrong...I'm not proud of it - but I'm just saying...it creates a buzz and that buzz clearly defines that there is an OHIO and there is, of course, an OHIO STATE.  Today, people are on line, on twitter, watching sportscenter and asking " Which mascot tackled the Buckeye?"  It was an Ohio Bobcat, from Athens.

Of course Ohio State won the game - why shouldn't they?... that's not news - beating them would have been news... but a executing a Delta Tao Delta-like sophomoric prank before the big game in immortal Horseshoe?   That might end up on a top 100 list of college sports pranks someday. Its not a win, but it creates an impression.   I also have to say that hitting Brutus in the nuts was marketing genius - really.  Pulling his fuzzy nut mask off and breaking his nose would have been a terrible choice, but as a marketing move I ask you:  Where else are you going to hit a buckeye?

Here's what we do next: we have one of Bobcat Attack's weirder members (I'm not going to name any names) dress up in a trench coat and sun glasses, then he walks alongside A&M's band on the sly, before jumping out and subtly--ever so subtly--shoving their drum major out of the way, catching his pointy/shiny stick in the process, before leading their band down a dead-end alley, doubtless causing them to bend their trombone slides when they crunch into the wall at the far end of said alley...

Well, judging by the Michigan and other Big 10 boards, this guy has a lifetime supply of free beer--Bells, Old Mill, Stroh's, or Pabst or whatever-- waiting for him in places like Madison and Ann Arbor. That's if that ol Hocking College thing doesn't work out.
