The only reason to transfer would to have the experience in playing in a bowl game.

Or you don't want to be associated with the program anymore, given what has happened off the field and what probably is going to happen on the field. The exodus won't come from juniors and seniors. It'll be the freshmen and sophomores (and new recruits).

That is true. But if that is the reason you are transferring, than you have already made up your mind to your team or privately. I assume going through summer practice that you might not be thinking that way.

I was just saying what was directly related to the penalties announced just now.

It will be interesting to know how many players will transfer.

Players also go to programs to improve and prepare to play in the NFL.  If the players that are going to come in around me are going to be limited in quantity and, arguably quality,  I l would look to transfer.  If I am Silas Redd - what is the upside to staying at Penn State and playing behind a deteriorating line - when I could transfer to a Georgia and start there?

Penn State will get worse and worse over the next 4 years.  In fact, the Bobcats would be better served to play PSU in 2013 or 2014 than 2012

But no one will care in 2013 or 2014.

The whole country will be rooting for OU come Sept. 1, 2012.

I think Michigan/Alabama is still the most likely pick, but this is going to be the dominant college football story from now until the season starts, and I would not be surprised at all if College GameDay was in State College Week 1.

I don't think there's any way GameDay is near that place for the next half decade.

The signs would be open season on Emmert. The atmosphere will be funereal. GameDay is a celebration of college football. I don't see much celebration going on that day.

I  will not be putting any OU gear on my car when I park there. I don't trust that crowd.

Disagree completely. I think the perceived severity of the NCAA punishment will lead to everybody backing Penn State as underdogs for the next four years.

I would rather Ohio open against any school OTHER THAN Penn State.  Make that any school in any division.

* Will the buildup to the game be emphasizing the relative merits of Lions and Bobcats players?

* Or will the focus be on the penalties and their possible negative effects on Lions' morale?

* If Ohio should win - not a lock by any means - to what extent will the penalties diminish Ohio's accomplishment?

Ironic that Penn State's first post-penalty opponent is Ohio - when Ohio was Marshall'sfirst scheduled opponent after the devastating plane crash.

I feel like this game was going to be a Penn State fest no matter what the outcome of the sanctions were.  Even before the sanction talks, I could imagine the only thing the commentators would talk about would be the Post-Paterno era and wether or not they could transition into a new coach successfully.  Now it's going to be a "can Penn State even compete against a "lowly MAC" team with the new sanctions media fest".

I also feel like that if we do end up winning this game (not getting hopes up), these new sanctions will cheapen the victory, claiming that their star players all transfered out, so we were suppose to win this one.  I was looking forward to the Penn State game so much because they were arguably our best competition this year.  After the dust settles, Marshall could end up being our best competition this year...

NCAA penalties announced today place Ohio in a no-win situation on Sept. 1 - a 180-degree reversal of a typical meeting between PSU (or other big 11 heavy) and a MAC team.

Actually, no. Remember that when all the current athletes committed, the coach was Paterno. Staying or leaving at this point will reflect how they feel about the new coach and the new atmosphere.

I think most people believe that PSU and its community still hasn't learned its lesson.

I personally don't think the punishment is that bad - should be worse imo.

It is hard to believe PSU will be the lovable underdog, but I could be wrong.

GameDay hosts may talk about the PSU/OU game just as much as Michigan/Alabama - but there is no way they will go to that place for that reason.

But I bet they will have a bunch of staff there and will do live interviews from State College on GameDay.

True obviously that is another reason.

I was referring to the penalties announced this morning. Wasn't referring to the many reasons to not stick around in that mess.

I agree, let's wait until the dust settles. What if the PSU team remains in tact, for the most part? What if PSU has a good 2012, but struggles in subsequent seasons?

The next week, we will definitely know more (as we find out how many players transfer and if they were projected starters).

I think it is a great opportunity to show off your program in front of a huge audience. A strong performance will give OHIO a leg up on recruiting on the rest of the MAC.

That's true for the guys already on the team, but this years recruits are Obiens guys. So the new recruits knew what they were getting into, more or less. Same with the 2013 guys yet to sign. I would like to see how many players left the program over the summer before these new sanctions came out. That might tell us something about the state of mind of older players. My gut feel is that true blue died in the wool PSU guys, who have followed them for years will still go there, much like they did at OSU during this last trouble.

That'd be a great selling point:  We can win in big conference stadiums.

As a sidenote, on ESPNU today, they were saying PSU should schedule FCS or MAC East teams to get more wins.

My personal opinion is that no players will leave because of the sanctions. A few players will leave because they are not happy, and the sanctions provide them an opportunity to leave.  My guess is that it will be fewer than 5 players. That in turn will mean they will have to cut loose of most of their verbals for 2013 as they will not have the scholarships to give.

This provides a pretty sound overview of the transfer situation.

There are 2 real question I have not seen answered.
How many scholarships will be cut for this coming football season?
How will the school decide who gets cut and what will be the options for those players?
Big decisions and not much time to implement.
Will PSU call around and help these guys find another school?

Will PSU have only 65 scholarship players for our game?
If so, what impact do we think this will have?

Zero mandated scholarship reductions until 2014 season. Potentially PSU could field full team this year and next if no one leaves.

As I understand it, here are the answers to 71s questions:

>>> How many scholarships will be cut for this coming football season?<<<

None . . . the reductions will be done by attrition and the cuts on incoming scholarships start with the 2013 recruits.

>>> How will the school decide who gets cut and what will be the options for those players?<<<

They won't be cutting anyone, but students athletes can decide to transfer with no penalty and no sit-out year; also a player can decide to quit the team, stay at PSU, and keep his athletic scholarship which will count against the total going forward.

>>> Will PSU call around and help these guys find another school?<<<

If a student athlete wants to transfer, I'd suspect that this would happen.

>>> Will PSU have only 65 scholarship players for our game? <<<

No, this will be in place by the 2014 season for four years.

>>>If so, what impact do we think this will have?<<<

I think the full impact will not come until 2013 season, unless there are a huge number of transfers, which I don't expect.

From what i've been gathering from the Twitterverse, most of the current players are keen on staying.  They have a really strong bond with their teammates and coaches, and even if they have no opportunity to play in a bowl game, most of them are willing to stick it out for the long run.  I doubt more than a few players will transfer out.  Maybe some talented freshman and sophomores might transfer out who want to play in championships and bowl games, but I feel like most of the team will be sticking around.

These sanctions won't really come into full effect until the 2013 recruiting class.  They already have two players in the 2013 class who have decommitted to my knowledge: 3 star safety Ross Douglas and 4 star defensive tackle Greg Webb who has now committed to UNC.  The recruiting battle is going to be a real tough one for years to come.  Just imagine being Penn State and trying to sell to a recruit that he has no chance in playing for a championship game or bowl game unless he redshirts, and even then, it's not guaranteed.  They won't have any problem recruiting players who come from diehard Penn State families who's dream is to play in Beaver Stadium on saturdays, but there is a lot of talent that isn't so committed to one team, and those are the ones that are going to be nearly impossible to pick up for the next 2 to 3 years.

I agree on all the OhioCatFan's answers ... slight room for error depending on how many players transfer in the next 10 days, but I also believe there won't be a huge number of meaningful transfers.
