Any chance of a Jesco White Bobblehead give away at the game?

That's a fabulous idea!

Everyone has my permission to make it so.

I must say though, this thread is starting to make wish I was making the eight hour round-trip drive .  I don't recall another fan base making such an effort to talk us into traveling to game at their stadium.

Another Herd fan here hoping to see lots of Ohio fans at the game so we can put these worries of a bad atmosphere to rest.

A few posts back somebody talked about our reputation in a negative sense which honestly make me laugh. Ohio is the only fanbase I have ever heard talk negatively about the fans in Huntington. I go out of my way every game to make sure I welcome opposing fans to the city and wish them the best upon leaving the stadium win or lose. The normal culture in the Marshall fanbase is to be a very inviting place to come.

I am blown away by the stories I have read here and I am not going to get into a debate about their validity because you witnessed them first hand. I just wish you would give it another chance because that is not what we are about at all. After almost every game I can find stories on the on the opposing teams message board about what a great time they had and how hospitable the Marshall fans were. It is something we focus on and take pride in.

Just make your way down to Huntington and I can almost guarantee you will have a great time with little problems. If anything does occur please get out your cellphone and record it so we have a record of it and we can address whatever problem there may be.

This should be a great game (probably high scoring) as it is very important to both teams and their seasons. I can't imagine staying at home for this one. Any road contest within about 5-6 hours is a no-brainer for me.

This rivalry is really starting to grow and I am enjoying it more and more each year.

Best of luck and I hope you put these stories behind you and give the trip another try. Looking for a great atmosphere and a great game.

If you have any questions about where to eat or where to visit while you are in Huntington just ask and one of us will provide you with that information. I plan on being at Chilifest most of the day leading up to the game. If you stay in one of the hotels downtown you will be just a block or two from the festivities.

Just acquired 6 tickets. I was not able to get them in the visitor's section because, according to the ticket office guy, the visitor's section is just about sold out....but there were plenty of seats in the other sections. My tickets wound up in Section 105, next to the visitor's section. So, I think it is safe to say that we will bring more than 113.

Also, I don't know what the usual timeframe is for the Ohio ticket office to send road tickets back to the home team, but it seems like they should have held off on this one for a few more days if possible. I would have much rather given my cash to the good guys.

Thanks for the post, Dunk.  I've got my ticket.  I have a family wedding five blocks away from the Joan and plan to make my entrance into the stadium about the end of the first quarter.

I've always been welcomed and treated well by Marshall fans.  There is idiotic fan behavior in every fan base, including ours, but it's in the minority.

Coach Holliday addressed the students via Marshall's student paper The Parthenon today to encourage the students to attend Saturday's game.

Ohio is the better team so if the Herd wins its because they wanted it more and we were caught looking ahead to Norfolk State.

2002 sticks out in my mind...Crushing last second field goal miss and the Marshall Cheerleaders and Mascot felt the need to jump the hill and ring the victory bell during the post game show.  These aren't fans...These are representatives of the University.

I'm totally fine with that and hope we do the same thing this Saturday.

Not the "Battle for the Bell" bell...The full size "Victory" bell we used to have on the hill behind the endzone.  Granted it didn't get rung often in those days (which leads one to wonder how in the world it cracked).  The point is, that would be equivalent to their cheerleaders grabbing the rifle from the Mountaineer and firing it during their post game.  Antagonistic, bush and disrespectful.

If large bells are cast with even minor flaws they crack fairly readily. Its not a function of overuse or metal fatigue.

I havent had a bad experience going down to Huntington. I have only had a funny experience. My dad and I went down there last year the week after the Ohio- Marshall game to check out VT. I wore an Ohio shirt and I got a pleasnt "F*** Ohio" when I sat down. I just laughed it off. Great place to watch a game though

Like I said, whatever makes you feel better about not supporting your team against what is probably the best opponent on your schedule this year, even with your best team ever.

Guess there is a reason Ohio wasn't considered for CUSA membership.

LOL, I'd like "Delusions of Grandeur" for $1,000, Alex.

I'm going to be attacked for what I'm about to say, but the only explanation I can find for the number of Ohio fans who report experiences that are totally foreign to my experience at Marshall is that many of these Ohio fans must go to Huntington with a real attitude that somehow brings out the worst in the small minority of idiots in the Marshall fan base.

That would be the opposite of what I did.  As I said I had a really good experience in the stands with the fans around me.   I can get along with just about anybody.  The two instances (one prior to the game, one post game) I had absolutely no interaction with the offenders.  The only sin I had perpetrated was having the audacity to wear my Ohio sweatshirt and hat proudly.  The guy screaming at us made it clear that "you don't do that around here".   I never saw who threw the can of beer and I certainly wasn't bragging post game since we had just been steamrolled.   I have no problem with fans telling me my team sucks even if it's not said with a smile but when I start worrying about my safety that's when my enjoyment is vanquished.

Naturally, we'll expect the same wonderful courtesies and treatment from the Marshall fan base that they show fans and extend that to the visiting Marching 110.

I've got eyes and ears in this group and will share with this board any unexpected altercation.  Good reports from them and I'd say those good references several of theHerd fans have posted will lead many to concur.

Any more antagonistic, bush, and disrespectful than a school mascot punching and tackling another mascot for no reason?  My point is that the actions of a few doesn't necessarily hold true for the masses, and it's not like our entire fan base is so perfect.  Just something to consider.

Not the same thing considering the fact that that kid wasn't a student and signed up to be Rufus with that sole act in mind.  That being said though, I was very critical of and embarrassed by that and I let the administration know as much.  You've also failed to quote the other instances I detailed including but not limited to chasing Marshall fans with whistles out of Peden.

I can also tell you that if I ever witnessed an Ohio fan throwing a beer at an opposing fan, keying a car, etc I would be the first to intervene and the first to call security.  The point is, you don't get a reputation like this out of thin air and if you want out from under it, you don't accuse people of fabricating it.  You bring it to the attention of the administration and you become part of the solution.

The argument that there's always going to be a few bad apples in the crowd doesn't hold water, either.  Most understand that it's not a majority of the MU fans, but rather a small percentage of idiots that ruin it for everyone, and in turn  ruin your reputation.  Like I said before, I've seen the Cats play in three stadiums over 100,000 (OSU, Tenn, PSU), and have seen them in various large stadiums (VT, Pitt, Rutgers, Northwestern) and have not had ONE issue in any of those, and each time we tailgated for several hours before the game.  If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....

when i lived and worked in huntington, marshall fans whined CONSTANTLY about how WVU fans treated them at the wvu/herd games but it seems like marshall's fans are lockstep in the same behavior of WVU fans.

my dad is a herd fan and will happily admit that he thinks that herd fans at the joan are just terrible.  we went to the I-AA championship there in 1995 and the way that the fans treated the opposition (players and fans) was downright awful and embarrassing for the community of huntington.

From the Charleston Gazette:

MU's season-ticket sales dipped a little, topping 12,600 with a late push. In 2011, that figure was right near 13,000.

"I look around the country, and they're dipping everywhere," said athletic director Mike Hamrick. "But we had a huge single-game crowd Saturday for Western Carolina. I don't look at it as a significant dip."

With no television and a lot of excitement surrounding the Ohio program, expect a larger walk-up crowd if the weather holds up. OU sold its allotment of 300 tickets, which didn't always happen when Marshall was in the Mid-American Conference.

So it looks like we'll have 300 fans there.
