Ohio moves up to #29 in this week's Sagarin, a huge jump from #70 last week, and #82 pre-season. Besides their strong win, they were no doubt helped by the Sacramento State win over Colorado.

17 votes in the AP poll this week, good enough for 34th overall.

Arkansas, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Ok. State all fell out. UCLA, BYU, Tennessee, and Arizona moved in.
LA-Monroe is also immediately in front of Ohio with 23 votes

Lost ground in the USAT poll, with only two points and tied for 44th.  To show you how screwy these can be, we were ahead of UVA last week after beating Penn St by 10 there, but they beat the Lions at home by a point on a last-minute FG and they move ahead of us.  I guess it depends on the games some of the voters can see.  UVA had our noon spot on ESPN/ABC this week while we were relegated to the Internet.

Take away the 13 points from the previous mentioned PD writer (who didn't vote for Ohio this week) and we would be even higher.

Tagging on to L.C., here's an explanation of the CBSSports.com 124: The CBSSports.com 124 rankings are produced by Jerry Palm's personal computer formula. Each week Palm will update his rankings 1-124 based on a projection on how the season would end. The rankings are not based on today, but how the poll would look at the end of the season. (Example, Boise State might be ranked No. 25 in most of the polls, but Palm has them in the Top 10 because he feels the Broncos will finish 11-1 at the end of the season).

Doug Lesmerises.  His ballot was crazy, as he was the extreme high or low vote on 6 teams in the top 25, and was close to extreme on others.  He has all of the upsets this week (and Arizona) ranked  together (UCLA 11, Arizona 12, ULM 13)

Lesmerises ballot is always a lil funky the first few weeks. A few years ago he decided he will be ranking teams based on what they have done and who they beat and try not to look at team names. I follow him on twitter and he responded on twitter saying that with a lot of lower ranked teams with upsets pushed Ohio down, but they are on the fringe and will probably get ranked again soon.

And really the AP ballot means nothing. It is ALL about the Coaches poll and eventually the Harris Poll.

Some coaches will notice the AP poll, and being ranked by the AP means more media coverage. For the BCS, it's an indirect effect at best. But there is some benefit to glean from it.

how many do you think we get now? I would like to think we're in the 30-32 range -- maybe that's a bit too optimistic. what are your thoughts?

Won't be a big jump seeing as Marshall isn't very high themselves. I think we won't see the Top 25 until at least Miami. If we keep winning, that would make us 7-0 going into the Miami game. Would be hard to not have a 7-0 team in the top 25.

ULM is Ross Perot to our Bill Clinton. We may get more votes then they do but they will get enough to siphon off any chance of us having a mandate. Hopefully Baylor will bring them back down to earth next week.

Monroe lost, so they'll likely lose all their votes.

I would think we will have votes added with each win. We still are from the MAC and that means no respect. Keep winning and we will get there, just like ball state a couple of years ago.

Balance in college football means teams will continue to get knocked off. Take care of business and I would expect to crack the top 25 o later than week six.

We will move up this week
Road victories count more than home ones.
Whether we crack the top 25 is yet to be seen.
We will continue to receive national attention all week.
Unfortunately, this weeks game could only hurt us if we don't take care of business, which we will.

I agree we will inch closer to the top 25. Some teams in the lower portion of the poll did lose so we could pass them. Also a couple teams ahead of Ohio that were receiving votes lost as well. My prediction is Ohio will crack Top 25 following UMass victory. Not that UMass is a quality opponent I just think that's when it will happen.

Last nights win at Marshall does carry weight because it is well known that winning in Huntington is very tough.

Neither Arkansas or Wisconsin should get votes, the Badgers right now are putrid and the Razorbacks getting shut out even by Alabama, means they aren't top 40 stuff at this point in their season.

Picked up 3 votes in the AP.  Now with 20 votes, good enough for #29.  Also of note, Boise is now the lone AQ ahead of Ohio at #24 with 95 votes.

Week 5-6 is typically when a small school breaks in.

By then, many of the fringe top 25 teams have lost at least once, some twice and there are very few unbeaten schools left (10 or so).

At that point, the Cats will enter the top 25 and stay there as long as they win.

The problem with these next few weeks for Ohio is that they're going to see teams in front of them lose but also see teams behind them leapfrog the Cats in the rankings. It's just the nature of the early poll system.

Wanting in before week 5-6 is probably being greedy but you never know.
