We may squeak into the top 25 this week, but being idle next week may allow someone to jump us.

Where was Texas Tech sitting?  They're DESTROYING West Virginia right now.

I can't stand WVU and I hope this blunts the Geno Smith for Heisman talk or that's who the Browns should be drafting with the No.1 pick talk I hear on sports talk radio.  As usual, WVU is overrated.

Every Marshall fan just gave you a standing ovation.

I wouldn't be so sure.  I suspect we'll get passed up by some other teams and remain stuck at 26.  This was not a good win.

Really?! At what point are people on this board going to just enjoy the ride? Either Texas A&M or Louisiana Tech are going to lose today -- that alone is going to open the door to #25 for us.

Sometimes I feel like people on BA are afraid of a Top 25 ranking. Is there some kind of superstition that I don't know about?

Look, I know that we did not have convincing wins over UMass, Buffalo or Akron. But we won. We were the better team on the field for those games. That's all that matters. It's "just the MAC," but it is still a HUGE accomplishment to go 7-0.

Go OHIO!

You are right, but I think I look at who've we've beaten and how narrowly we beat them by and it makes me a little nervous about where we are in the grand scheme of things.

Don't get me wrong, I'll take 7-0 any day but I also look at who've we've beaten lately and how they've done since.  For example, look at what UMass. has done since Ohio beat them-they got smacked by Western Michigan last week 52-14.  Right now, Northern Illinois is clobbering Buffalo 42-3.  To be honest, the way we're playing right now, I think Northern Illinois would have their way with us. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I think those teams (Buffalo, Akron, UMass) all had some of their best games when they played us. They played UP to our level. As a poster stated earlier -- we have been playing DOWN to some of our weaker opponents levels. That is concerning, I agree. We have the tougher half of our MAC schedule coming after the bye next week. I hope the coaches and players will figure out how to come out on the field with their BEST effort each week -- regardless of the opponent.

Having said that, we are 7-0 and most casual football fans (heck, most AP voters) are going to look no further than that.

True!  And to play devil's advocate against myself, maybe we took so much out of UMASS and Buffalo they had nothing left the week after they played us.  Anyway, time to enjoy the win (and several of Great Lakes' finest Dortmunder Golds...)!

Unfortunately, none of the 18-25s in either poll is losing today.  Once you're in, you really need to lose to drop out.  Our one shot will be if the Tx A&M-La Tech game is a blowout, one way or the other, enough to drop the loser out of the rankings.  If not, don't be surprised if we stay the same, or even lose ground.  Some folks will respect the fact that Akron's much-better coached than they have been.  But they might also see that NIU is creaming Buffalo (42-3 in the 4th) while we just got by them.  These close games are hurting our chances.

This Texas Tech trouncing of #5 WVU is the most serious threat to us jumping into the Top 25.

#22 plays #23 tonight, one of them will lose. The loser will not  stay ranked higher than a 7-0 team, regardless of margin of victory vs weaker opponents. The voters only really care about how you win when they're looking at who should be #1 vs who should be #2, when you get down towards 25 nobody gives a rip.

+1

You can probably make it all the way to #14 without people really looking into how you've won, or what particular opponents you've played against. It's all about your overall record until a team is trying to break into the top 10. The MAC certainly isn't the SEC, but there is some amount of parity in FBS-level college football.

Sorry people but we really have no business being in the top 25 right now.

Our defense has been atrocious the last few weeks and we have been BARELY beating winless/one win teams. We should be trouncing those teams. Playing to the level of your opponent is not what top 25 team do.

I want us to be a top 25 as much as anyone else, but I just don't think we are right now.

You are so right, FearLeon.  It has been a wonderful ride so far.  I am so proud of our Bobcats.  Now if only the ESPN & other sport shows would at least cover us on their highlights shows.  They've covered Penn State each week, & I believe we kicked butt there!

Would you rather be in the top 25 and not think you deserve it or think you deserve to be in the top 25 and not be?

If we're in, we deserved it.  I highly doubt there are pollsters out there who are just wanting to stick a MAC team in there for funsies.

Honestly right now I'm more worried about trying to win the MAC East than being ranked. Kent would steamroll this team right now

This is exactly my point. We just played 3 teams with a COMBINED total of TWO(2) wins and we won by a combined total of 16 points. That's not top 25 material IMO, 7-0 or not.

I'm with you.  The team doesn't worry about being ranked.  Why should we?  I'd be just as happy if we went 14-0 and never got ranked.  The rankings are a reflection of the opinions of the 60 or so people who have a vote.  They have their own biases which include who you play and how badly you beat them.  You can't change that, except by creaming every team you play.  The NCAA lists our strength of schedule at 100+, so unless we knock the crap out of everybody, it'll be difficult to get ranked.  But getting ranked is pretty much beyond everybody's control, so be like Alfred.

ok people. get a grip. the team is 7-0, we should be happy. instead we are bickering like children about whether or not we should be in the top 25. who cares? we either will be or won't be, but lets think about this, too: Louisiana Tech is ranked at 5-0, and 4 of those 5 opponents have 1 or 2 wins. one aq school win (over an awful Illinois team). i think i am comfortable saying i am pretty damn happy with where the team is. with the devastating injuries, especially on defense, we have still found a way to go 7-0. ENJOY IT.

Defend the eyepatch.

If you're unhappy about being undefeated in the middle of the season, you need to take a step back and a deep breath. It's sports. It's supposed to add enjoyment to your life, not make you unhappy.

I love this notion that we shouldn't be in the top 25 because we haven't earned it. Like we're Private Ryan and we've got Tom Hanks' blood on our hands if we don't go home and live a long happy life, or beat Akron by +20.

If the top 25 is only for teams that earn it then for the first 4 weeks of the season the top 25 should be all non-AQ teams. In week 1 we won at Penn State and the Suckeyes beat Fiami at home. Which win was more impressive? Which team overcame more inequalities on and off the field and still won? Now, guess who got 634 votes and a #14 ranking, and guess who got 10 votes and no ranking.

But they "earned" it, right?

child please.

My guess is Ohio will sneak into the top 25. I was wondering what was the last MAC school to appear in the top 25 for both football and basketball in the same calendar or academic year? I am guessing Miami may be the only one but not sure?

I don't think anyone here said they were unhappy with being 7-0. The only points being made here are that it is/isn't good enough for the top 25.

Everybody is happy with 7-0, but some would like to see us putting these lesser teams away, that's all.  Also, I don't think we are the 25th best team in the county but do we deserve to be in the top 25 at 7-0? Probably.

IMO, I think it is a big deal to be in the top 25 as the scores and schedules will be on the bottom line.

Paul Graham said there's nothing to celebrate about today.

And even if you don't think we don't deserve to be ranked, I have a very important question for you: So what?

#15 Texas and #17 Stanford both lost today and earned their 2nd losses.  At least Texas should drop out of the top 25 after that spanking.
