I have always really liked "Oh Yeah, OU".  I say keep it and run with it!

The consensus seems to be to limit it to maybe a two or three times a game.  However, is there any way that a modified version of it could be used to energize the crowd on defensive third downs?

GOOD NEWS, EVERYBODY!

This is the ESPN stream of the game, at the exact moment when OU Oh Yeah rings throughout the stadium. Take a listen!

Just wanted to make sure it didn't get buried on the bottom of the third page. :D

Thanks for posting.  Seems louder on my phone video and that one.  But, way cool nonetheless.

Hopefully a new tradition.

Agreed with those that think it was cool to hear our crowd cheer so loudly in unison for anything.  And I also agree that it is a shame that it wasn't cheering something for which we own the copyright.

At 90 years old, Vern Alden wrote a letter to The Athens News asking why people don't seem to feel compelled to use the name that we own: OHIO.  The guy was only the President of the Harvard Business School before he was President of OHIO and understands the importance of branding, and also understands that if you do not use a brand, you then lose the right to own it.  And this led to tOSU challenging our copyright.  If Vern thinks it's important, then it is important.  He's just not some crazy coot nattering around in an assisted living facility in Massachusetts.

So sure, it doesn't hurt if "OU-Oh Yeah" sticks, but like it or not we are going into a strech where our last four games will be on national broadcast television, and most of the eyeballs and ears turning in are of people who believe OU is Oklahoma.  They don't care if you believe we are OU, because we aren't.  Oklahoma owns the trademark for the interlocking OU that we seem insistent to continue to use on t-shirts in our bookstores, and if they ever feel as though we are a threat to their trademark, they will enforce their copyright, and a court will shut down that usage in short order.

So my two cents is to come up with a second cheer that utilizes "OHIO" in it somewhere, because our institution owns that.  I am personally fond of "WE"-"are"-"OHIO", emphasis on the "WE", because it sticks it in the face of Brady Choke AND tOSU fans.

Brady thinks it insults tOSU by calling them "OHIO", and tOSU fans seem to buy that it is an insult, even though their fans spell O-H-I-O in cheers, with their bodies, and do the inane "OH"-"IO" as if it is their birthright.

In particular, I like this because it was the chant in the crowd after we had Michigan closed out in Nashville.  It then became a t-shirt, and I am fond of it because I was the one that started the chant in Nashville.  And it is different from Marshall/Penn State and many others that use the common variation because the emphasis is on "WE" then a soft "are", then institution name, not "WE ARE", which makes for a cadence differentiation from the common cheer.

But as I find most of those living in Ohio, folks are just lazy.  So I don't anticipate there is any passion for actually creating anything incoportating OHIO.  Get off my lawn.

That's pretty loud on the video broadcast without the entire crowd being present. Had that been done midway through the second quarter it would have been even better.

I like how some of the people that complained about how we didn't have a good game day atmosphere are going right a head and shooting down the only thing that has created a good game day atmosphere.

Thaaaaaank you DA. Someone who finally understands branding. Fail to use OHIO on this miracle of exposure, we are permanently handing it to OSU. "WE are OHIO" is desperately needed.

This is exactly the kind of thing that keeps people in the game. Watch any large(r) football program and see that the fan involvement revolves around group cheers. Why does O$U play Seven Nation Army so much? Keeps people into it. UGA does the same chant, one side Georgia other side Bulldogs.

Use it sparingly, don't over do it. I would suggest doing it on timeouts and and prolonged stoppage in play. I would also suggest that someone talk with the marketing department and try and get some videos of Rufus leading the cheers for the scoreboard. Most schools have some kind of visual cue for those who are new to the rituals.

Having shirts and signs and other stuff with the WE are OHIO is fine but please do not do the chant. Marshal uses the chant, as does Penn State. Too many other schools have started to do the same kind of thing. The WE ARE chant has become the equal to the over played, "SCHOOL NAME HERE Nation" hashtag and fan moniker. I am fine with OU oh YEAH. That is only one cheer. I would like to see us add a cheer to kickoff that uses OHIO. It would be garanteed to be on TV every time. Think about the Georgia Bulldogs "GOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS, SICK'EM, WOOF WOOF WOOF" You hear it every time and it is directly tied to their school, it has become a brand that no one else can duplicate.

I thought OU-Oh yeah was cool when I heard it on the broadcast and should be kept. It's been OU since I first stepped on campus in 1958 (I was 13). It was OU during the 6 years I was there. But, I have always said I attended Ohio (did you mean Ohio U or Ohio State?). No, Ohio University!

After giving less than little consideration to "OU-not Oklahoma" and "OU-no Ohio", I think "OU-Go Ohio" could be an additional cheer. I think one side or the other at Peden can handle the extra syllable. I'll go back to lurking.

Or just GO -- OHIO. Simple. Easy. and it suffices the tinfoil hat wearers who are worried about OU confusion.

I agree with D.A.  Use "OU. . .  Oh yeah!" too much and the dyslexic folks at the U. of Okie will get their pants in a wad and their lawyers in court to stop us.  I don't mind very judicious uses of this cheer.  It was kind of ingenious when it was first used (at least to my knowledge) several years ago in Oxford, when Ohio had more fans in the stadium than Redchicken U.  It was awesome to go back and forth in their stadium as though we owned it.  I thought it was much more effective in that venue than it was this Saturday.  Maybe we should only use it in away stadiums when we have enough on opposite sides to pull it off.  In general, I want a cheer that has "OHIO" in it in some way.  Even more important, we need to completely can the use of mocking of OSU when we use their "OH-IO cheer" and then add "U."  This is just too subtle for the average fan and actually defeats what we are trying to do with our branding.  Most folks don't get the irony in it, and take it literally.  The "OU . . . Oh Yeah!" cheer while not nearly as bad, does have the potential of backfiring.  I guess I'm sensitive to this because I remember the Alden years and latter in the Glidden years the Battle of "Ohio" when the idiots at A&M sued us for using our name!

My 2 cents:

1) I've NEVER heard Oklahoma referred to as OU. I've seen it printed that way in logo form or on uniforms, but never spoken.

2) The HUGE problem with the "We Are..." chants are that it sounds like we're copying Marshall, ONE OF OUR MOST HATED RIVALS! I don't care how you intend to put the emphasis, or how the emphasis is actually applied, it'll sound like we're copying the Terd.

3) OU-OhYeah is simple, its easy, it seemed to kick-up more or less spontaneously last year during the Sweet16 run. Even if thats not the first time its been used, thats when I first noticed it.

4) I don't think a student led stadium chant that is not assisted in the university's official capacity (i.e. cheerleaders aren't involved, scoreboard isn't used) would be actionable by Oklahoma

5) Its probably going to keep happening, regardless our individual feelings.

It is a chant at a football game. I don't think you can sue someone for copyright infringement when it is our name. Also, we sell officially license merchandise. I have a hat that I first bought from Wal-Mart that has OU on it. It is a different version of the OU and I believe if my memory serves me right, we have been down this road before and as long as we don't rip of their exact OU they are fine with us using it. Go to the bookstore and look at the hats, there is a Lidz hats that has OU on it. The official university licensed bookstore isn't going to sell something that infringes on a copyright.

You must not know many Okies, they refer to U of Okie as "OU" all the time.  I once had a colleague from Oklahoma who would refer to "My OU" and "Your OU" to distinguish Oklahoma from Ohio.  Ironically, this was a colleague at Marshall back in the 1970s.  And, to make it even more interesting, the colleague's last name was McCoy, and we had another colleague in the same building, but different department, name Hatfield.   That last sentence is OT, but I thought strange enough to be worth mentioning.

First off, I wanna say that I love the "OU, Oh Yeah!" chant. I think it's something that OUr school, as a whole, can own as OUrs, and kudos to the people who took the initiative to make it happen. I wasn't able to be there on Saturday (younger brother started his first high school football game back home, so I couldn't miss that.) But I watched the stream online, and when this started, I got goosebumps and started yelling "OU!" at my computer screen, while my parents stared at me with confused faces.

It's great that both sides of the stadium are getting involved in the cheers. Someone mentioned earlier on this thread that the most famous fanbases of college sports have recognizable stadium wide cheers. Whether it be "OH-IO" at Ohio State, "Go Green, Go White," at MSU, or "Roll Tide," at Alabama, the unison cheer is an essential part of a great gameday atmosphere.

This is something that needs to continue and grow. I say we definitely keep "OU, Oh Yeah!" and maybe throw in something like, "Let's Go......Bobcats!" The more and more people get involved in the game, the better and better the atmosphere gets. I've seen people complain on this board about how fans aren't engaged in the game. Well, this is the opportunity to engage them. Let's take the ball and run with it.

Using OU instead of Ohio has quickly become a huge pet peeve of mine over the past couple years.  However, there is no escaping the awesomeness of this stadium-wide chant.  It was just as beautiful to the ears as the 110.  I laugh at the comments that are against it.  There's no changing it.  It's easy and quick to catch on.  I agree with those that say this is unique, this is ours, and it brings Peden TOGETHER.  That's exactly what we need at Peden.

I have two crazy things to say to conclude this.

1.  Saturday was barely a game to remember performance-wise, but it could be seen as a turning point for this program.  10/13/12 was the day Frank Solich said "let there be noise!".  Solich's staff has worked their butts off for this school and these fans.  They have given us a reason to be loud, and this is exactly the type of response they have been working for.  Not only do they see results on the field, but our fans are turning a corner as well.  This is not the old Ohio football program.  It's time to build a new atmosphere that matches it.  Keep it up!

2.  I've been on the border on whether to come back for these final two weekday games.  Being part of "OU, OH YEAH!" makes me want to come back and make sure it happens again.  A 3 hr drive on a weekday is crazy, but there's so much about this season that you don't want to miss.  If we can keep building on this game-day atmosphere, we will have no problem bringing sold-out crowds to Peden.  Even on a weekday.

I would personally love to see this chant about 5 minutes before game time.  Imagine being one of the players and hearing that chant in the locker room.  What a great way to get the players pumped up for the game.
