OU OH YEAH is perfect and original. We are Ohio is too much like Marshall and Penn State and any spelling of O-H-I-O will be too much like the Suckeyes. Everyone at the games and watching knows what OU stands for. OU OH YEAH is a great chant!! I say do the back and forth five times and on the fifth time do the long dragged out ooooohhhh yyyyeeeaaahhhh!!!

I too loved the crowd participation, but I would also prefer something with Ohio.  The three way O - Hi - O chant is an interesting concept, but one must learn to stand and walk first.  One cannot fly into flying...  How about just O - HIO?

I always wanted a We Are... OHIO chant, but agree that something different might suit us better.

Like the way you're thinking DFC, a student side screaming O with the tower side screaming HIO or other way around.

(And tower side people, you shouldn't feel like you need an invitation to get into a chant, you're at a sporting event, just join in.)

It's not about the people at the games, folks. Obviously they know what OU stands for and that's not the problem. It's the national branding that is compromised if we call ourselves just "OU".

And if confusion with the Suckeyes is your argument, then we can equally say that we are confusing ourselves with the University of Oklahoma. Who is btw nationally known as OU, NOT US.. leave it that way.

We have a BEAUTIFUL thing going here being known as simply "OHIO".  The world is getting to know who the real OHIO is. It's the nation who we must make our first impression to, and we are compromising this opportunity by calling ourselves OU.

You only get one first impression. Who do you want to be, OHIO or just "OU"?

I am highly skeptical that national branding is affected by a single cheer.

Thought the point of yelling was to make noise for the team, not advertising.

When your own fan base, students, and alumni call a team OU 99.8% of the time, why would you expect other people to refer to your school and team as OHIO?

Sure, the scoreboard will say "OHIO". But ask these same people what the Attack Cat logo says (clearly OHIO), and they'll say OU like there's only two letters. Drives me up the wall.

I love pushing the fact that We are OHIO, but we are also OU.  Plus OU Oh Yeah is an awesome chant that could define this school for multiple reasons.  We are Ohio would be cool, but that is the same as Penn State or Marshall...  OU Oh Yeah is completely unique.

The O  H  I  O, O H I O, OHIO handclap cheer needs to become as loud as OU! / Oh YEAH!

Let's see if we can get that going, too.

Finally, Peden seemed very loud!  It was awesome and the cheer needs to stay.  We can add as we win!

Who the heck outside the state of Ohio and immediate border states knows that we call ourselves OU anyways? I don't think there's many. Better question, who cares? It was fun what happened on Saturday, let's just run with it. Personally I've never heard a louder collection of cheers from the entire fan base. EVERYONE was into it. Even the people in Section 105.

Just because we call ourselves OU doesn't mean the rest of the country has to. Make them aware when they show up to the stadium. Besides, how awesome would that be to hear from outside of the stadium? Hearing the "OU, Oh Yeah" chant from a distance would be moving.

I get the OU vs OHIO argument, but I think that OU, Oh Yeah cheer along with the O-H-I-O after the fight song are the two best chant/cheer traditions we have going and we need to continue them loud and proud.  OU, Oh Yeah is not going anywhere and I don't want it to.  It is easily identifiable with OHIO UNIVERSITY because nobody else does it.  It is original, catchy and every student on campus says it with pride while supporting OHIO UNIVERSITY!  I am not going to be the one that poo poos a cheer because of OU vs OHIO.  I am going to be the one that encourages any cheer that resonate with Bobcat Nation and instills pride and passion for OHIO UNIVERSITY.  OU, OH Yeah does that, there for I support it continuation!

A few months ago I was at the Columbus Airport when I saw a Bobcat shirt.  I said OU and the person immediately responded Oh Yeah!  Despite that fact that it is OU , I think this can be are rallying cry as a university and athletic department.  Much like War Eagle and Roll Tide, OU, Oh Yeah resonates with OHIO UNIVERSITY alumni around the world.  When you have something like that, you don't run away from it!

Agreed. GO Bobcats seems to be the other one I get everywhere from Stone Mountain GA to the Tulsa Airport when I have OHIO gear on ....

ANd the OH YEA! seems to fit the funnest band in the land, party school, Athens counter culture in my mind. KInd of a satisfying peacefulness rather than a strict Rah Rah. For those who have been there and get it there is a certain resonance that comes from knowing.

Who really cares what we're branded with?  OU, Ohio, Harvard on the Hocking, all refer to the same school.  We're getting national attention, and as long as we keep winning, there's going to be OHIO on the top 25 ticker for ESPN.

I bet USC fans are super mad that they're known by every sports person out there by their acronym, not the full university name.

If you're into adding chants with OHIO in them, then by all means share your ideas.  The Ozone higher-ups would love to hear them.  OU-OH YEAH is our battlecry.

Directionals like USC will always be inferior to OHIO.

OU Oh YEAH is an amazing cheer for us.  One of my favorite moments ever in Peden, THEY NEED TO GET THIS ON THE SCOREBOARD. Bold OU with an arrow pointing to students, Bold OH YEAH with arrow pointing to the tower. back and fourth five times then a huge OH YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! flashing to show the end.

As to the OU/ OHIO debate,  you are missing the original issue.  OU is fine, we are OHIO UNIVERSITY.  You don't say OS when talking about state.  The issue is when the U is added at the end of OHIO, no one else gets that treatment to differ them from the state university.

We are OHIO, We are OU, We are not OHIO U.

That's exactly what I was thinking as well. While spelling out OHIO would be great, as people have pointed out, most people know the OU Oh Yeah chant. It worked great on Saturday, so why try to ruin a good thing? We have something really special and great here, and it is my belief that we should take it and run with it, not complain about it.

Also, I had some friends who were up on radar hill during the game, and they said you could hear the chant from there. When you can hear the chant all the way on the other side of the river, that's something special.

But Radar Hill is significantly farther down the river.  Down past Pruitt.  That's impressive.

Radar Hill is probably further from Peden than Bong Hill is, with much more trees in-between.  Also a worse climb.

OU is still an acceptable colloquialism that can be used in casual conversation where both the speaker and the audience are familiar with the reference.

However, OHIO or Ohio University are the preferred nomenclature anytime it is mentioned by written word (print and web) and/or spoken word (TV and radio) to an intended audience greater than just casual acquaintances.

Therefore, 'OU- Oh Yeah!' is a perfectly acceptable cheer to be used amongst Bobcat fans at a sporting event.
