I'd love to see the chant before the game, but again, stability should be our modus operandi. Before the game has too many variables. People are just getting situated or still trying to enter the stadium, they don't know what's going on, and they're not into the game mode yet. Also, there's no universal signal to everyone in the stadium that its time for the cheer (besides the signs). The quarter change does that. It's a free signal that becomes second nature after a season.

This fanbase is in survival mode. We must use our environment to our advantage. We must be as efficient as possible. Using the quarter change increases our chances for success.

One day I'd hope for us to have a traditional pregame cheer, but currently the fans in Peden on a whole are not ready for that.

I also had for real chills after the chant caught on.... I was on the tower side and could not believe our loyal older alumni were yelling along with the students.  I never really liked the Oh Yeah thing until yesterday when I was shouting it!

I resemble that remark!

I ran down from my seat to catch up with Ozone dude with the "OH YEAH" signs on his way back to the student side to sincerely thank him for his efforts. He was very appreciative of the tower side's participation. I do not recall anything equalling that in Peden in the 46 years that I have been attending Bobcat games.

A few years ago at Oxford OUr students sittng on their otherwise totally empty student side started the chant, "O-U," with the tower side Bobcat fans shouting "OH YEAH." It was fairly impressive but nothing like yesterday, of course. My favorite thing about that Oxford cheer was the guy sitting near us who obviously was a Bobcat but unfortunately resounded every time to the "O - U" with  "I - O."  We gave him an A for effort!

Hoping we repeat the chant, albeit correctly, in two weeks! We will be there to see.

Relevant sidebar:

Two years ago in basketball, at the Convo, against Miami (sucks), we had a very similar cheer.

It was a triple OT sloppy loss. But the crowd was great; close to 10,000.

Between the end of regulation and the first OT the cheerleaders held up a Let's Go to the alumni side and then a Cats to student side (or vice versa, can't remember, plus its arbitrary). It happened again between the 1st and 2nd OT (but not before the third). It was loud. It was awesome. And until yesterday I hadn't heard anything like it in my five years as a Bobcat fan.

Two things to take away from this for analysis:
  1. It never happened again
  2. It was successful during a break where people weren't focused on the game.
Many questions could be asked about the event. Some are: Why hasn't it been attempted again (it really was amazing and felt like I was at a big time basketball game)? What environmental factors were responsible for its genesis? Can it be replicated?

I don't doubt that the cheer I've just mentioned and the one from yesterday can happen during play. My hypothesis is we will see the best (most) product during a quarter/period interchange.

That wasn't the only time it happened. Might've been the only time it was memorable, though.

I too was impressed. That was a moment that is a game changer in the cultural shift that has been going on in Athens over the last 4 years. Rocked the stadium and brought both sides of the field together. Just freeking awesome.

I hope that cheer heads over to the Convo this fall and gets plenty more run this winter.

Culture change. Gotta love it.. As the AD is fond of saying.."it's a great time to be a BObcat."

It sounded great! Would have been deafening if done before the post-halftime exodus. My thought at the time was "Dear God, let this happen in the convo! it'll be incredible!"

A little twist on the idea:

What if after the 1st and 3rd quarter, when we're winning, the cheer is OU ..... Oh Yeah. And when we're losing, the cheer is Let's Go..... Cats. It makes it less repetitive and more meaningful at the same time.

I'd vote for giving time for TV/radio to get back from break, and shift towards start of the second/start of fourth. By the way, do you know how to tell when a TV game is back from commercial when you're at the game?

Yes - There is always a TV contact/official, always seems to have red on (hat, maybe shirt/jacket also), w/headset on for contact, who stands on the field during commercial breaks (about 5 yards onto the field near the end of one of the team bench areas - seems to always be the side closest to the network trucks, equipment, etc.). The game officials watch and wait for him to give the signal (a hand gesture) that the broadcast is back from commercial. He signals to them then walks off the field.

My dad, who turns 87 next month, hates the guy in red.

He remembers going to ND games when there weren't TV timeouts before having to suffer through them beginning in the 1970s. He would come down to Athens once a year while I was a student in the early 1980s and loved the fact that there was no man in red indicating TV timeouts.

Ahh, the price of going big time.

My thoroughly embarrased wife had a fine observation.

Earlier in the game a similar OU-OhYeah cheer almost got started between the two sides, but faded quickly when the student side began to answer with the OhYeah themselves...

It makes it appear the tower side is "not invited"... so it died quickly.

The signs however cleared up who was responsible for what, and when dealing with people in large numbers, simple is good.

Keep it simple, make it fun.

Go Bobcats!

Yep. I can't believe it took six years to try it again. I was there and it was done without the aid of signs. It was also powerful in that basketball game two years ago.

First and foremost, get off my lawn.

That being said, I do not like the OU-OhYeah chant. It's great that unified chants are developing, it's a key indicator of a successful program, but for the love of god we need to prevent our school being branded as "OU". We are OHIO and our chants should reflect that.

Suggestion: Student side chants, "WE ARE" and the other section spells "O-H-I-O"

Thoughts?

Marshall and Penn State both do the We Are chant. I'm not a huge fan of the OU/Oh Yeah simply because I'd like to have the actual name of our school in the cheer, but it is original, which I think trumps everything else. I wish the school up north hadn't taken the O-H...I-O. That really should be ours, but obviously we can't use that.

The only other ones I have thought of are: Let's go.........Bobcats!! and O...Hi....O. The latter could be done with the student section doing both of the "O's" and the tower side taking the "Hi" in the middle..

I was a cheerleader during the wretched 0-11 season back in 1994. So glad the fans have something to cheer about and are so engaged. Thanks to the O-Zone for stepping up over the years in football and basketball. Wish they were around when I was there -- it would have made our jobs much easier, especially in football.

Then, it was more like O-U, Oh No!

I like this idea.  In fact, it fits in very nicely with a little ditty, written by one of our alumni, "Round on the end, Hi in middle, O-Hi-O."  It was written in reference to Ohio University.  The Athens group, the Local Girls, does this on one of their CDs.  The author later moved to Columbus and -- as with so many things of this nature -- the Evil Empire stole this song and as adopted it as their own.  However, they don't use it as much as they used to.  It's time we reclaim it.  This cheer would fit in naturally with this reclamation effort.

This brings to mind another song, "Go Ohio" that the band used to play.  It was used a lot in the 1920s and '30s, but has been used very sparingly since.  I remember about seven years ago (or so) that the 110 did play it a few times in pre-game and early game situations, but then it got drop again and I haven't heard it since.  I believe it's on some of the early 110 CDs.  It's a catchy little tune that has that "football music" sound to it.

There has been a "OU, Oh Yeah!" T-shirt for a few years now. That ship, I think, has sailed. I'm not of the school of thought that advocates everything has to be about branding or everything has to have our proper name. Honestly, I think it's one of our best cheers: It's fun, it has character, and it can be modified. I'm a big fan of it.

I too loved the crowd participation, but I would also prefer something with Ohio.  The three way O - Hi - O chant is an interesting concept, but one must learn to stand and walk first.  One cannot fly into flying...  How about just O - HIO?

I always wanted a We Are... OHIO chant, but agree that something different might suit us better.

I personally believe that trying to implement something brand new with a different cadence will flop. Most in our crowd are at least familiar with OU, oh yeah, and in trying to gain broader participation, that is important.

1. We can (and do) have more than one cheer. We can have more.
2. Why are so many STILL and CONTINUALLY so OBSESSED with not using OUr ACTUAL abbreviation/acronym? Type OU into Google search - Ohio University is the 3rd item on the list. Sure, Oklahoma is 1st, then other universities that have and "O" and "U" in them come up later, BECAUSE THIS IS THEIR ABBREVATION. NOBODY is confused about who is referenced at games or on gear (as well by school colors). Does somebody actually think the 'kron fans or online veiwers might have thought we were cheering for the Buckeyes? The "deniers" are NEVER gonna win this one. There is no other way to abbreviate it - Period!

OU, Oh Yeah! Simple, Positive, Fun - It's Perfect!

All the other variations of spelling Ohio and everybody has to struggle with how that does NOT get confused with TO$U (Did they do that first? Did OU steal that from us?,........................)

I don't care what you chant, just chant.  The Ozone has been needing leaders to step up.  People love to cheer but hate to start it...Glad to see you guys stepping up.
