What will hurt his draft stock was his play against Alabama where he was exposed as a good, but not great linebacker.  His "leadership" and "character" was keeping him in the upper part of the 1st round.  Now he is looking like a lower 1, early 2.  Folks will say it was the "girlfriend" that will drop his stock - but that too is a facade.

Partly I suspect it is getting such big play because it is at a time of year when so little is going on. Partly it is because it is like a train wreck, and people are looking to see who is going to be carried out bloody next. But, all kidding aside, I do think that the newness of the internet dating scene is causing interest. How many people are secretly wondering if that person they chat with on the web is really who they say they are?

Another thing we may see from this, for better or worse, is some new statutes. It seems that regardless of whether or not Te'o was in on it, no laws were broken by anyone concerned, and the only person with a potential lawsuit is "Reba", whose pictures were used without her consent. I'm not a big fan of more laws, so I'm not convinced that it's a good thing, only that it is a likely outcome.

All kidding aside, now that I re-read the original article, I am a little disappointed in the tone at times. The "80% sure Te'o was in on it" part, even if it is just a quote, makes me wish it was a bit more neutral and just reported what was known as facts at the time. Reading the article again knowing what we know now sure seems to make Te'o appear to have his hands dirty.Oh well.

The funniest thing I think is when people are saying this will kill his draft stock. So many other questionable characters have been drafted high, so I doubt an online girlfriend is going to scare NFL teams.

People seem to be focusing on the "80%" line and not that all three of our independent inside sources with direct knowledge of the hoax believed Te'o to have been a part of it. It would have been irresponsible for us NOT to have published that.

For that matter, and I told this to SI, if all three had said they believed he was purely a victim we'd have printed that, too.

According to reports:

"Te’o shared the news with the university on Dec. 26, and on Dec. 29 Notre Dame decided to pursue an investigation. On Jan. 2, the university hired a private investigation firm, then just two days later the investigation ended, reports the (South Bend) Tribune, even though it “did not interview Te’o or his family, nor did anyone attempt to contact [the primary suspect of the hoax] or any of his relatives.”

Pathetic response by ND.

I find myself wondering what exactly Te'o reported to Notre Dame officials, and why. Originally I thought he had reported the hoax, but apparently he still didn't realize the extent of the hoax until much later. So, did he go and say something like "Coach, I got something funny going on in my life, and I really don't know what it is. You know my girlfriend that died? Well, now she seems to be alive, and I think she's playing some sort of game with me, and it's messing with my head."? Also, if that's all he had to report, why did Notre Dame investigate it at all? I suppose they did because there had been all that press about that story, but the easiest way to interpret the facts at that point would have been that some girl made an overly-dramatic breakup to get out of a relationship, faking her death, and now regrets it.

What is remarkable, though, is the comparison between the work done by Burke, and the work done by the private investigators. Burke had a pretty slim lead, and no starting point. The private investigators could have had access to Te'o, and to his family, and to his phone records, yet they didn't bother interviewing him, or his family, or looking at the phone records. They seem to have just done a few searches of the Twitter conversations, and traced the address for the flowers. By contrast, with almost nothing to go on, Burke did an amazing job, and put the whole story of the hoax together, and even tracked down "Reba".

Still showing your anti-ND bias you displayed over three decades ago as a young student at Ohio University. Still smarting from all those beatdowns the Irish put on your Nittany Lions?

Oh I certainly still dislike ND.  Just amazed they keep giving me reason to...even after all those years of their football team falling off the cliff.

There's just part of Te'o's story that doesn't sit right- if he truly believed his girlfriend was a real person how could he not go visit her at least once when she was in the hospital?

According to Te'o she was hit by a drunk driver on April 28th. Classes ended at ND on May 1st and finals were done by May 10th. He says in mid May he was flying from South Bend to Hawaii for summer break when her family called and said they were going to have to pull the plug. He says he expected to land in HI and have a voicemail saying she's dead.

Why did he not stop in SoCal and see his girlfriend if she wasn't going to live another day? Who does that? And what about the rest of the summer? Fall camp didn't start till August 4th, he couldn't stop by SoCal on his way back to ND to check on his girlfriend who is still in the hospital because now she has cancer too?

WHAT does it take for this guy to stop by and check on someone he supposedly cares about? He said they knew each other for 4 years and date for a year, but he couldn't stop by and see her, or at least meet her family? c'mon, this doesn't make any sense.

PP is spot on.  I've expressed the same misgivings in previous less elegant posts.  Te'o's story doesn't pass the smell test.

The problem is that no explanation of the facts passes the smell test. The best one I can come up with is this:

I think that Te'o was duped, but that he was guilty of playing games, too. I think that Kekua was more of an acquaintance than a girlfriend to him, and that he used the relationship because it was convenient, and amused him. I think he made lots of calls because he was trying to be a good guy and help in her time of need, but really didn't feel any particular obligation to visit. Over time they probably did become closer, from all the contact. Then, when she "died" at the same time as his grandmother, it did mess with his head, but then the story took on a life of its own, and the nature of the relationship expanded beyond what it ever had really been, and he didn't object. Why bother, after all, she'd dead, right?

When she called again on December 6th, he was pissed, because he thought she was playing games with his emotions (she was, but not the ones he thought). When she kept calling, he finally went to his coach - he still thought she was real, but by this time thought she was a real pain who was trying to play head games with him, and just wished she would go away, and didn't know what to do The PI report confused him more, because it tied her to Tuiasosopo, but then, he knew they were tied together. At this point he knew something was fishy, but he didn't know what, exactly. Still thinking she was real, he didn't know what to do? Do you hold a press conference and say "Well, you know that girl I thought was dead? I guess she faked it, but at this point i wish she was dead."? It wasn't until he read the Deadspin report that he finally understood - she indeed had never existed at all.

Now, meanwhile, What was Tuiasosopo's goal? I have no clue. I think he started it as a prank, and it was for his amusement. Somewhere along the line he needed a girl play the part of Kekua, and then things got out of hand. I have a funny feeling that out there somewhere is a real girl that developed a real crush on Te'o somewhere along the way, and the 'prank' took on a life of it's own. I have another sneaking suspicion that this girl can't come forward and admit that for some specific reason, such as, she may be under age.

As for Reagan Mauia? I have no clue where he fits in. Maybe he's the second guy that assisted Tuiasosopo, and opened his mouth before he realized it was far, far too late to save the scam.

So, there is my best guess...feel free to shoot holes in my theory. Every other theory has holes, and mine probably has plenty, too.

Mike Coleman posted this link on another thread, and I thought it belonged here. Supposedly not there are multiple claims about who was really the voice of Lennay. Listen to the voice at Deadspin.

It just gets more bizarre all the time. Seems to me it's time to prove it. Ronniah says he was the voice. That's fine - let him prove he can make that voice.  Or, prove he can make it using voice-changing software. We may not hear too much more from Tuiasosopo for awhile, though, as he's apparently in the care of a mental health professional.

Then there is the alternative, that it was his cousin, Tino, from Pago Pago. Fine, show how they made the connection all the way to Pago Pago using an LA area code. Someone has the phone records to show they were on the other end. If someone is revealing the truth, they will be able to prove it. If it was really her, Tino can come forward and explain herself.

To be honest, this shouldn't be this hard. The longer this goes on, the more it appears that something is being covered up. For example, Reagan Mauia still has yet to explain his comments that he met Kekua in Somoa. Did he meet Tino? Probably not, as that would actually make sense...

I've come to the conclusion that I don't believe a thing Manti Te'o says.  I get the impression he believes what he says.  I suspect we are dealing with mental illness here.

In the sidebar to that page as a related story is a Q & A with former Post editor Laralyn Sasaki, which is kind of amazing because she herself is a Napoleon High School alumna who got her start editing our high school newspaper, the advisor to which was my dad.

Her father, in turn, is Larry Sasaki who played baseball at Ohio in the (late 50s?) and was my high school guidance counselor.

Whether he was solely responsible, or working with Teo, either way that was always a possible explanation.

So, where does Tino Tuiasosopo fit in? And Reagan Mauia? Did Mauia actually meet Tino?

That's not at all the conclustion I've come to. It seems to me like he put way too much trust into an Internet relationship and lied to various people because he was embarrassed.

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree.  I don't pretend to have any greater insight than anyone else into this bizarre case, but Te'o seems to me to have a few screws loose.  Very early on he mentioned having met this fictitious lady.  At that point he was either telling a knowing lie, or he believed what he said was true.  After watching him I really think he thinks he told the truth at all times in this matter.  Therefore, I've developed a theory to try to put the pieces of the puzzle together:  I suspect he my suffer from a mental illness called borderline.  These folks are connected with reality most of the time, but in certain areas of their personality they have breaks with reality.  Their flights of fancy get mixed up in their minds with reality.  It is an extremely hard mental illness to diagnose.  Now, in this case, it's obvious that he was also the victim of a hoax.  It's hard to figure out exactly where the hoax part ends and Te'o's reality breaks start.  I may be completely wrong about this speculation, but it's the only way I can make total sense of this story.

Do you honestly believe he has a mental illness or are you trying to make sense of something that might not entirely make sense?
