So, given these options:

Hawaii Bowl BEATING Marshall

Going to MACC Game (no guarantee of win)

Which would you take?

Personally...I'm Hawaii bound! That would be unbelievable...

Man, Thats a tough call...I would have to make some kind of arrangements to make it a vacation.  Ive been trying to get to Hawaii for 20 years on a vacation and have never been able to go for one reason or another.    Would be awesome if the school could work out some kind of discount arrangement with an airline.  (at least some reasonable secured rate)

Have you notice how he is overdoing his comments on NIU now.  Even his partners are calling NIU Herbies team.....  He's even jumped off the Braxton Miller love wagon.....Me thinks someone from the higher ups at ESPN had a nice little chat with Jerkie....

No, I hadn't noticed that because I've been avoiding watching him since his anti-NIU tirade last fall. Thanks for pointing that out.  I'll reprogram my voice-recognition-voice-activated automatic Jerkstreet mute program.  Sounds like an interesting development.

NIU still has to beat Ball State to win the West, and then has to beat OHIO to win the MAC. I don't think the conference should be cashing the BCS check just yet.

I'm sorry, but playing Marshall, who is already on our schedule every year, in a bowl game, holds ZERO appeal.

Just this past Saturday he talked about Northern Illinois not being worthy last year nor this year.  He could barely put in a good word for Fresno State too.

I usually find Herbstreit likeable (especially since he refused to be a TOSU sellout) but he just can't come to grips with a MAC school getting into the BCS.

Simply doesn't respect the conference from top to bottom.  We need a BCS win by someone like Northern to prove him wrong.  Nothing else will work.

I think Northern Illinois could take down someone like Miami, Fla. right now.  So, if they win out, this could be the year.

USATODAY still has us at #6 MAC team and out of a Bowl.  We MUST beat either BG or BUFF (both are ahead of us in their BOWL talk) and not stumble vs Kent and UMASS to go bowling this year (I think...).

We beat Mass and Kent and go 8-4 we SHOULD make a bowl. Of course we finish behind Balls, Buffs, Northern, Toledo and BG but there has to be a sixth bowl out there.

I seriously, seriously doubt that there will be a sixth bowl spot for the MAC.  Next year, yes.  Six teams my be the norm from 2014 on out.  But in 2013 there will be a shortage.  Several schools came off probation this year and several schools came out of their transition period to 1A.  There are 6 or 7 more schools that can go to bowls in 1A this year with respect to last year.  Last year only Louisiana Tech & MTSU got left out (CMU got in ahead of La Tech due to La Tech's hubris in trying to avoid UL-Monroe).  Best guess is that there will be 4-8 schools eligible sitting at home this year and nearly all of them will be MAC and Sunbelt schools.

Remember that bowl eligible doesn't mean bowl-guaranteed. Simply by getting to 7 wins, we are automatically ahead of all 6-6 qualifiers.

A lot of these calculations are greatly altered if NIU goes to a BCS game

That would mean that at least 4 MAC schools go to bowls.  It would take a spot away from a AQ league in the BCS which in all probability would mean that there would be one less open spot in the bowls tied to the league that lost a BCS spot - which very probably would have gone to a MAC school anyway.  I think 4 or 5 is going to end up being the number and NIU going to the BCS may or may not add an extra spot.

not really because the AQ team would just take one of their leagues tie-in games.

Remember that bowl eligible doesn't mean bowl-guaranteed. Simply by getting to 7 wins, we are automatically ahead of all 6-6 qualifiers.

Even that is only ahead or 6 win teams vying for bowls that end up with open spots.  If your conference has a tie to a bowl then the 6 win team from that league still goes ahead of any other team.  The AQ leagues have enough ties that pretty much guarantee a 6 win AQ school will get to go ahead or a 7 or more win non-AQ because the bowls usually make more money off of an AQ and want to make sure all eligible AQ teams are not left home.  The MWC and CUSA still have their tie-ins based on the Houstons. UCFs, and TCUs being in the leagues.  They are much weaker now.  But there are enough ties to make it a good bet that the 6 win teams in those leagues get to go.  Somewhere, a spot will probably open from the AQ leagues that don't have enough eligible teams to cover their contracts in that a 8 or 9 win MAC school is guaranteed to go to ahead of some other 6 win school from another conference looking for an open spot.  But I don't think there will be many.

A 6-7 Georgia Tech went bowling last year while the 8-4 Middle Tennessee team that beat GTech by 21pts sat at home. We need to be a no-doubter top 3 MAC team and the only way to do that is to win the East. I like our chances.

Ohio doesn't win the MAC East then its not in the Top 3 of the MAC for sure. With backup agreements the MAC is on pace for 5 or 6 bowl openings with 6 schools potentially finishing with 8 wins or better. That is why we need a win against Buffalo or BG to feel secure. We can't rely on feasting against Kent or UMass and finishing 8-4 that way when the other 8+ win teams all have better conference victories. It may still not matter that we didn't beat Buffalo or BG for getting into a bowl but it will require some luck with the bowl openings.

Unless we win the MAC Championship game, I think I'd rather take my chances with an at large bowl bid.  They are more recognizable bowls with the potential of playing a better team.  For selfish reasons I want the Hawaii Bowl but objectively playing Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl would be a great opportunity for our program.

OHIO vaults ahead of BG per USA to play Boise in the Poinsettia.  Better to be #5 MAC than #6MAC which ain't gonna get a bowl!  We just need to win 3 of the last 4.  Let's start at Beefs!

I will be in Palm Springs, CA over the Christmas Break so San Diego is my selfish pick. Then driving up for New Year's in Las Vegas but the LV Bowl is pre Christmas.

after that beat down last night, why would any bowl committee pick us if they had any other choice? I don't think we pass the "eye test"right now.

Well, let us consider;

1. Ohio has been a good bowl team these past two years.  After one "fan" announced he would not waste his time watching the Independence Bowl the Bobcats were a dream bowl team.

2. Bobcat fans.  I got the feeling from AdvoCare, they would love to have the Ohio fans back.

3. Bowls are an event and the 110 is a super bonus.  Does anyone else remember their contribution to the pre-game band vs band?

what did we sell 178 tickets to the Potato bowl? How many to Shreveport ? We do not travel well to bowl games, granted the 110 is somewhat of a plus
