They obviously had no historic connection to the use of the name.

You obviously have continued to show your pleasure at supporting OHio State under ever psuedonym you have ever used and the poster above is right. You are just trying to distract from the issue.....you can keep putting historical stuff up here from days when branding did not matter as muchand it is still wrong to refer to them as OHIO....they are state. Indiana is in Bloomington ISU is in Terra Haute. Michigan is in Ann Arbor and State is in Lansing. Most states do not have a Bully located near the state house beating up on every other institutionin the state.\

IUPUI was never given permission to have residence life or dorms on campus for fear that their proximity to the state house would give them the same advantages as tO$U has in Columbus. The board at IU and PU constantly guards and keeps IUPUI in a second citizen mode because of lessons learned from COw town.

So in an effort of learning from lessons learned from Cow Town, IU and PU exhibit the same bully mentality they want to guard against???

I just think the entire thing is silly.  As personal experiences of people in post above, this is not a problem of great magnitude and shows petty jealousy about many trivial issues.  None of these are serious issues worth getting worked up about, nor are they any direct violation by OSU.  We should be more worried about winning Championships than what cheerleaders are wearing.

So if a school has a historical connection with a specific flag, the cheerleaders should be allowed to use it?

If you think this isn't a big deal just imagine for a second what would happen the moment another state university stared selling gear that said Ohio State and justified it by saying we have the right because we have always been an Ohio state university. It doesn't matter if Ohio is part of their name. It ISN'T their name any more that Michigan State is Michigan.
We have been way too tolerant.

Not necessarily wanting to bring this thread back up, but I am getting quite annoyed by something that has been going on ALL season and this is the only group that will understand my frustration!

Every time the cameras show the OSU cheerleaders, they are constantly shouting "Go Ohio!" Makes me sick! These people just don't get it!

Want some cheese with that whine? Seriously?

The agreement specifically states Cheerleader uniforms can say Ohio, so why can they not "yell" Ohio.
I don't believe that is correct.  It was the Ohio State cheerleading uniforms that just read "Ohio" that ignited this dispute in the 90's.  Ohio University's John Burns sent a cease and desist order to Ohio State demanding those cheerleading uniforms be retired along with Ohio State's baseball uniforms that also read Ohio.

While that letter from Burns may have indeed happened, what ignited the controversy and led to the out-of-court settlement was O$U suing us for the AttackCat logo.  They challenged our copyrighting of the logo.

And you might recall what triggered the challenge.  As I believe you know, a challenge can be filed effectively only if it is mounted within a period specified by copyright law.  As the deadline was nearing, Ohio was "nice" enough to inform Ohio State that its opportunity to challenge was soon expiring.  As John Burns knows, it wasn't the most strategic of decisons.

Coors Light sucks anyway (so does state).   Give me a Jackie O's Mystic Mama anyday!

I travel regularly for work and have to continually distinguish to those not from Ohio the difference between Ohio and Ohio State.   It gets old.   Anything we can do to protect what is ours needs to be done.

If anyone cannot distinguish from the font of the OHIO, and the color scheme, not to mention the large OSU logo, then we probably do not want them as a fan.

Not an example of infringement per se, but here is a great example of the overall mindset of their fan base:

http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/1q9rwz/college_football_rivalry_at_its_finest/cdatxzb

The post is a picture of an Ohio State toilet and inside the bowl is the michigan logo.   In the comments there was the expected "OH..I-O" to which I followed with my comment "S-T-A-T-E. Osu is not ohio. Ohio is Ohio."

The interesting thing to note is that 49 people disliked my comment.  Compared to only 34 that liked the original OH-IO crap.  22 people even went as far as to like the rebuttal of "You're an idiot." Worst yet 6 people liked the reply that included "No OSU is Ohio"

Totally mind boggling to me how they could say that with a straight face.

If there was ever a time to take a stand on this issue, it is now.

This illegal use of our name does irreversible damage to our brand and more importantly our University as a whole.

In some cases, use of Ohio may seem like a petty infraction to some. I don't see how anyone could defend the association of our name with this embarrassing display as innocent or meaningless.

Actually, OSU is already on top of it.  Well sort of.  They are actively in a lawsuit with another tshirt manufacturer headquartered in Columbus:

http://dockets.justia.com/docket/ohio/ohsdce/2:2012cv00662/155950

One of the most interesting bits is one of the designs listed as "potentially infringing" is "O-H-I-O"

Somebody please tell me TO$U doesn't have a trademark on "O-H-I-O".  (While I'm at it, somebody please tell me there hasn't been a considerable increase in TO$U gear being worn around campus in Athens in the past week - though if you do, I'll be shocked.)

No increase in tO$U gear on campus. Which means there are still too many students wearing tO$U gear. I have been trying to confront people like this recently. Ohio has a great student fanbase but there are still too many clowns blindly rooting for tO$U.

Don't know what to think. Local TV has MI ST fans pouring into the street s of downtown INdy while the traffic jam on I 70 going east is mounting quickly. I just know that going to work on MOnday is going to be a lot nicer now that I do not have to listen to all those folks over near the Ohio line telling me how great the Poison nuts are and making arguments about how the rest of the world is so blind because they are not in on the lovefest with the undefeated Urban and his miraculous, wonderful team
