I'm sorry friends but anyone professing shock or dismay at:

a high number of alcohol infraction citations in Athens,

I THINK WE ALL SHOULD BE DISMAYED THAT ONE SMALL CITY IN OHIO HAS 1 OUT OF 4 CITATIONS IN THE ENTIRE STATE

a University doing the responsible thing by indicating support for state laws,

I THINK WE ARE QUESTIONING THE INTERPRETATION OF THE STATE LAWS, NOT QUESTIONING THE LAWS THEMSELVES

an Athletic Department trying something new to:

--- appease its supporters, -- ARE SUPPORTERS HAPPY ABOUT THIS?

--- raise funds, -- IT IS UNCLEAR IF THEY ARE PROFITING FROM THIS OR NOT

a "corporate" entity disappointed at losing its ability to capitalize on a sporting event to make money and attract attention,

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT "CORPORATE" ENTITIES DO. THAT IS THE POINT OF CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS

the true relevance of Arlo Guthrie to Bobcat Sports

just isn't living in the real world.

Follow Pete's advice. Keep your head down and behave responsibly. No one wants to harsh your vibe, man.

AGREED.

I would usually agree but the fact of the matter is that when you enforce a law. Force it equally everywhere. Why can every other school have a good tailgating atmosphere except us. Marshall was tailgating in an Arby's parking lot last week drinking and having fun. Why is there no enforcement there. OSU tailgating is huge. 50 times the size of ours and yet for some reason we get more tickets??? That makes 0 sense and people should be upset about it.

Everything I've heard is this was strong-armed by OUPD and APD - which were responding to pressures from liquor control. Athletics fought tooth and nail for the status quo and HATES the new set-up. It's far from a money grab...with all of the rules in place on who can serve alcohol, I've been told athletics will see exactly $0.00 from alcohol sales in Peden or Tailgreat Park. It's all being sold by local non-profit groups that get to keep all the proceeds.
This is not true. The beer and wine sold in Peden and the Convo will be sold under a permit that was just approved and through the athletics food vendor - AVI. Just as athletics makes a profit on those pretzels we've all loved to hate, they too will be getting a profit on the beverages. As for the beer garden, that is another issue all together.

This craziness started when that student sponsored home brew festival behind McCracken Hall got busted. Even the Green and White Club had to change their policies.
Which is true, the university gets profits on beer or not?

Also, it should be noted that Ohio Athletics and Ohio University are not profiting off of this new policy. Alcohol sales in Tailgreat Park are being run by non-profit groups which are keeping all proceeds. The rationale behind this decision was simply motivated by a desire to comply with state and local law enforcement.

Feel free to contact your Ohio Ticket Sales Team account representative with any questions about gameday.

Profit from the sale of beer and wine in the Convo and Peden. That concession is run by AVI not non-profit groups. The beer garden is a whole different beast.

Here's what I experienced and I can only speak from this actual occurrence last year....

Like most of us, I had a long work week and couldn't wait to drive over from Cinci for a beautiful football Saturday in Athens.

I met up with my bro's (most who live in Athens) and was excited to be there. We tailgated in the corner of the Peden Lot towards the Hocking. While sitting there enjoying a fine time with friends and good food, a bicycle cop approached me. He said to have the beer poured out (of the plastic cup) before he returns. If not, he would give me a ticket.

I came to notice (what looked like) a State Highway Patrol Officer on the Peden Press Box Roof with binoculars directing the bicycle mafia. He was a law enforcement officer of some jurisdiction.

I just don't need the hassle man. For the first time in my Bobcat Life I am considering forgetting the drive tomorrow. Parking and police hassles are not worth it.

If I do come down, I will party up town and walk down the hill only to hope my car isn't towed when I get back. Very, very unfriendly alumni atmosphere. The university and city either aren't in sync on how to handle the larger crowds or they seek to profit. I don't see any other logical explanation.

If you asked me to recall one problematic incident in the last 24 years, I couldn't give you one example.

Right on. Like BobcatBandit said, if you are going to enforce it at that level in Athens, enforce it like that everywhere. Does having binoculars on the roof happen at the horseshoe? At InfoCircumcision Stadium? Oxford? Bengals games? Browns games? Stop targeting Athens!

And this is not an isolated incident. For whatever reason, this path is a foolish one to follow for the powers that be. I've spoken to a number of people who feel that if the beer-in-cup hassles continue, they will no longer attend games. But, similar to the parking services harassment, there seems to be some autonomy that ignores the detriment the policies will manufacture.
Diamond Cat is spot on; can anyone describe an incident that would have resulted in this draconian approach to tailgating and the necessity of red solo cup spotters on top of Peden? Why are we going out of our way to dissuade people from coming to Athens? ((OUPD chief Powers' last post was at Miami; coincidence???))

Shortly after 5:30 I purchased the first beer (and Cabernet- for the Mrs) in peden stadium. It exceeded expectations. Maybe it will be on the tombstone.

Actually yes! OSU puts two on the top of the stadium on the North end and have them on the press box.

From what I saw in the Tower lot, things were pretty easy going. Didn't see any "spotters" on the roof or any other fans get harassed.

Any other observations from today??

I tailgated at the Convo because I didn't want anyone harassing my 10 year old for drinking beer.

Tailgated at Convo, no issues. Two cops on bikes rode by us while we were playing cornhole and drinking beer out of green solo cups and not a word was said.

I wonder if Ohio started selling beer every where in the stadium would that drive families away? Most people with children do not want to take them to a bar to watch a football game. They should probably send a questioner to all the season ticket holders before they start selling it everywhere in the stadium.

What kind of beer and wine was offered (brands and vintners)?

I could be wrong, but I think it was Bud, Bud Light, Redd's, and Sutter Home wines. One side had Stella in addition to those.

Wayne, State Highway Patrol has stationed officers atop the stadium in Columbus for decades and has nothing to do with tailgaters enjoying an adult beverage in the parking lots below.

Update from yesterday.....I couldn't pass up going to the game.

I do not know why things were different but not one hassle for drinking out of a cup in the Peden Lot yesterday. Given what happened last year, it doesn't add up but I'll take it.

Parking....as far as I could tell the same issues exist there. I could park around uptown for free after 6 PM. However, I guess the catch is you cannot leave your sled on the street over night due to the street sweeper rolling around 3 AM (at least that is what I was told).

Great tip from the bartender at The Cat's Eye.He told me to feed the meter at the Athens City Garage through Midnight. After Midnight, you can park there Sunday for free so I was covered. Not the most convenient thing but worked.

I also heard there are free spots down by Morton good for overnight Saturday. My buddy scored one and was also covered.

Was an awesome day capped off by a win.

If you don't have a parking pass on gamedays, try the Klippinger lot.

Coors Light and Miller lite in the North beer garden. Didn't catch the wine brand but it was packaged in a single serving box. Walked down to the south beer garden but didn't buy any there. It may have a different selection.

edit: Saw someone else mentioned Redds. That was in the north too.

Redds is a MillerCoors brand so that makes sense that Miller Lite & Coors Light were offered alongside it. I would be surprised if both InBev & MillerCoors brands would be served.

To me. it was business as usual in the tailgating area.

It was nice to see punchcard park being put to use. With action on all 4 corners, it looked like a football game was going on.

Kind of felt this way as well. But, we were fairly late arrivals. The beer gardens were a big hit for a few in my group.
