On another thread someone suggested that the FBall coaches might need to learn how to build excitement from OUr last 3 BBall coaches with recruits. OUr FBall crowds (22K avg lately) certainly need to learn from the BBall crowds (7.5K avg lately) about what Home Field/Court advantage means (and why it's still pretty clear that we are a "BBall school"......)
This has always baffled me. The last couple years, we have really built up season tickets holders, student attendance, etc. to the point of dominating the MAC in football and hoops support. Yet the culture at both events can't be more different. The Convo is more of a loud/rowdy environment...while the deep-seated culture at Peden is to sit and golf clap. Peden really is like a tennis/golf environment.
Why are the two environments so different? Peden has MORE people per game (like 3x more). And it's the exact same people going to both venues. Can't understand it for the life of me. It's like football is just a social event, whereas basketball is actually something to get excited about. Very strange...
The thing is, football games ARE big social events. Look around Columbus, or Austin, or Baton Rouge and tell me how many people among the tailgaters really care about the game. The same thing, on a smaller scale applies here. I've often said college basketball would be superior all the way around if it had fall weather and tailgating available before it. This is more support for the concept that we are in fact a "basketball school".
EDIT -- To the point of the thread, this should be a well attended, and close game. The weather will once again be perfect, and Akron isn't quite as good as BG offensively, so I think OUr guys have a good shot at getting back in the winning column. 23k plus for attendance announced. 15k there at the end. Cats beat 'Kron by a FG, 16-13.
