On another thread someone suggested that the FBall coaches might need to learn how to build excitement from OUr last 3 BBall coaches with recruits. OUr FBall crowds (22K avg lately) certainly need to learn from the BBall crowds (7.5K avg lately) about what Home Field/Court advantage means (and why it's still pretty clear that we are a "BBall school"......)
This has always baffled me. The last couple years, we have really built up season tickets holders, student attendance, etc. to the point of dominating the MAC in football and hoops support. Yet the culture at both events can't be more different. The Convo is more of a loud/rowdy environment...while the deep-seated culture at Peden is to sit and golf clap. Peden really is like a tennis/golf environment.

Why are the two environments so different? Peden has MORE people per game (like 3x more). And it's the exact same people going to both venues. Can't understand it for the life of me. It's like football is just a social event, whereas basketball is actually something to get excited about. Very strange...

The thing is, football games ARE big social events. Look around Columbus, or Austin, or Baton Rouge and tell me how many people among the tailgaters really care about the game. The same thing, on a smaller scale applies here. I've often said college basketball would be superior all the way around if it had fall weather and tailgating available before it. This is more support for the concept that we are in fact a "basketball school".

EDIT -- To the point of the thread, this should be a well attended, and close game. The weather will once again be perfect, and Akron isn't quite as good as BG offensively, so I think OUr guys have a good shot at getting back in the winning column. 23k plus for attendance announced. 15k there at the end. Cats beat 'Kron by a FG, 16-13.

Bball games are over and done in a crisp 2 hours, Football games are creeping into the 3.5 hr range with these absurdly long and numerous TV breaks. Its hard to stay focused and excited for that long, especially when there are so many interruptions in the action.

Excellent point about game length. You also have the unpredictability of the weather. Between last night and this morning, the forecast for Saturday changed. Also on the season ticket front, the vast majority of the increase in sales have come from the very low priced family packs. At just a few bucks a game, those prices attract the very casual fan and are very easy to just give away or burn.

Word!

I tried to explain to a more casual fan than I last Saturday why there were TV timeouts in a non-televised game. Anybody know? When I tune in on ESPN3 I usually get a blank screen during the "TV timeout". Who is seeing these phantom ads?

ESPN is killing live sports. Ironic, isn't it?

On a somewhat different front and not exactly related, I notice that Pitt beat VaTech last night. That means Akron beat Pitt, who in turn beat VaTech, who beat Ohio State.

So, you're saying that if Ohio beats Akron, Ohio>Ohio State?

That actually makes sense but I haven't seen any David White or Citizens Bank ads on ESPN3 yet. Instead of the "Commercial Break" banner, maybe it should say "This Space Available, call 1-800-594-CATS".

Radio commercial breaks also take the form of media time outs (times out?)

Is that correct? I wouldn't think they had that authority since the broadcast is being put together by ESPN, not ISP. The difference with radio is the radio broadcast is "brought to you by ISP" or whatever Russ says when they go to commercial.

On ESPN3, I get an occasional commercial for Dr. Pepper, but mostly I get "your event is at commercial break". Considering I'm a captive viewer, just sitting there, waiting to buy whatever they flash before my eyes, why isn't some commercial placed there? ;)

Seriously, I don't mind not seeing commercials, but I wonder why someone isn't buying them.

When ESPN3.com started there were no commercials. They then started selling ad time as a separate package from the other members of the ESPN family. The fact that the number of ads has been increasing the last year or so means that more companies are buying the package. The more ads ESPN3 sells the better it'll be for the next MAC contract with ESPN. However, I agree that don't understand why they don't just run a PSA when they have an ad block that's not sold rather than posting that crummy graphic "Your Event is in a Commercial Break."

You have the radio time, which is where ISP is selling, and they are getting their bang for their buck.

Timeouts (one word).

Media timeouts are part of the game, whether it's televised or not. Radio networks need the breaks the same as TV nets. It just seems that when a game is televised there are more of them, though not as bad as the NFL, where you get a timeout after a score and then again after the kickoff. But you'll notice there are few commercials aired once a game goes into OT or otherwise runs unreasonably past its allotted time.

Saturday's game was extremely long because of all the flags. I like that the NFL has equipped all the refs with mics so they don't have to huddle together to discuss each penalty. They can communicate with one another from where they are. Saves some time. Wish the NCAA would do the same thing.

BTW, looks like there's only about 2,000 seats left for tomorrow. About a third are in the visitors' sections, but there should be a good-sized crowd and we might even see a fair-sized contingent from the Akron-Canton metroplex.

Hah! I'll believe that when I see it. 'Kron has literally never brought more than 15 fans to Peden. We'll see...

If I had to take a wild guess as to why there are TV breaks for games broadcast only on ESPN3 I would guess its because its easier to run a standardized production process instead of having 2 separate production schedules for Tv and non-TV. This way if ESPN decides to change it to a channel broadcast at the last minute or if they want to broadcast a replay of the game at a later time the game tape is already formatted for TV.
