If we’re comparing apples to apples, Timmy’s first season as head coach he went 3-9 before all the NIL and transfer portal things came to a head. At worst Coach Smith is going to go 7-6 his first year.

There really isn't an apples to apples comparison possible. Probably the closest I can come up with is this:
1. In his first year as Ohio head coach, Albin was 3-9. Since 2020 wasn't really a season, we can compare it to 2019, when Ohio was 7-6, so call it -3.5 (4 less wins, 3 more losses).
2. In his first year at Charlotte, Albin will almost certainly finish 1-11, down from 5-7 last year. Call that -4.
3. In his first year at Ohio, Smith could end up anywhere from 7-6 to 10-4, down from 11-3. That could be anywhere from -3.5 (4 less wins, 3 more losses) to -1.

Both have some dropoff in their first year, but hopefully both drops will be short-lived. I think Smith and Albin are both fine coaches, and I hope both have a better 2d year than first year.

Now, back to the task at hand. Beat Buffalo, and hope the tiebreakers shake out in a good way, and win all remaining games.
Albin was also head coach for a month before the season started, did not get to hire his own staff and had two who had mailed it in knowing they were retiring.

Smith may want to make changes after his first year, too, or Albin may, at Charlotte. Either way, I expect both to do better their second year than their first.

I'm pretty sure Smith already has more wins than any first-year Ohio coach since the 1800s. We're also three scores from being second behind JMU (based on SoS) in the playoff picture. Just FYI.

That's ironic, considering that Ohio may not even make the MACC game. I wonder if they would have made the playoffs, had they beaten Ball State and WMU?

Probably not. But those two plus Rutgers would've put them in a position to advance if JMU faltered. We would also have to win the next two, which are no givens. All of this came or comes down to play or two. Missed kick here, etc. very close to special season. Every loss so far except OSU by 6 points or less. Not hard to fathom sitting at 10-1 right now.

^ What you just described is one part of why this season kinda hurts.

1 or 2 plays away from winning games, or in the case of the game at Ball State, if that 2nd Half wasn't a collapse.

Lack of execution held this team back from what they could've realized. I'm echoing what others are saying here.

I asked this question the moment Albin left for Charlotte:

"Does he really think he's stepping into a better situation there?"

Now I'll ask this question again... And the obvious answer to it is "No."
Some of you have ZERO idea on why Coach Albin left for Charlotte!
So why don't you tell us.
I have mentioned before on this message board, but many good ole boys on this message board don't want to hear why Coach Albin is now in NC. Ask the former AD who is now in Baton Rouge why Coach Albin is no longer in Athens? She won't provide the truth. This is the same AD who hired Coach Smith before Christmas 2024. Coach Smith was working without a contract until October 2024 when current AD Slade Larscheid got the deal done. This was reported by USA Today in early October 2025. Many posters think the former AD was the best thing since sliced bread. Some posters on this message board have NO clue how the former AD treated employees.

Interesting stat of the night with a Charlotte flavor: Charlotte's kicker last year was one of only 2 in the nation without a missed attempt, FGA and XPA. He transferred to Cincinnati and has been money for UC this season until night v. BYU on national TV, missing on 3 FGA through the first 3 qtrs.

Not to be disrespectful but "Put up, or shut up". You have posted 1,218 times the same stuff. So please tell us all WHY he is in Charlotte. And I'll bet my last dollar you do not know Julie Cromer at all. Your third hand info is just that. My belief is they have better veterinary clinics in Charlotte and that is why he left.

In the same vein, Nebraska also has a former Charlotte kicker, their backup kicker last year. He has been 42-42 on extra points, and 11-11 under 40 yards, plus 2-5 over 40. In the opening game of the year, Cincinnati at Nebraska, there wasn't a missed kick on either side.

Isn't the portal wonderful? Get a good kicker like Spetic, and he's gone for big bucks. Get two, like Charlotte had, and both are gone for big bucks. But, find a kicker like Peacock, and he probably won't be going anywhere near the portal....

Even if he disliked Cromer intensely, he may regret not having more patience. Cromer was never going to be at Ohio long, and he could easily have outlasted her.

I get it, I play this game mentally too. But you have to also consider the same in reverse with WVU & Miami wins. Even BG & EMU we could've blown. I just don't feel like this team was on the brink of greatness.

While most on here thought we would do well this year with Parker coming back and quite a few defensive backfield returnees, we lost a lot almost everywhere else. Think of our losses in the defensive line and linebackers, running backs, wide receivers, kicking game and offensive line. Some of those holes were filled okay, others not so well. You also have to look at the coaches we lost. While some would say we came out ahead there, others might disagree. Continuity, at least, was lost. I’m pretty sure that maybe aside from the NIU game, we really didn’t play a complete game in all phases. Some might disagree with that assessment, but I really didn’t see it.

While we had, I believe, 4 all MAC players who were transfers last year, we may only have one this year.

I think it was a rebuilding year and if we win 8 or 9 games, that’s not too bad under the circumstances.

I now have a second very reliable source who confirms what the first source told me that Cromer created a very hostile work environment. This second source also added that she was not a very efficient administrator. HOWEVER, that does not excuse your buddy Albin from his very rash decision to cut bait and run. Just a little more patience, like two weeks or so, and he could have gotten, per President Gonzalez, the same at Ohio as he was offered by UNCC. You seem unable to assign any blame for this fiasco to Tim. To me this was a cut off your nose to spite your face move.

Please don't mistake my comment for saying this season was a disappointment. I agree, the results are right in line with what we could have reasonably expected. I was just saying I am not comfortable going along with a narrative that we were a couple plays away from the college football playoff. I think we are what we are, a 7 or 8 win team.

Last year, we get two field goals by Spetic, one 46 yards, to beat mediocre CMU team by two points on the road. This year we lose to mediocre Ball State team by six after missing one FG and turning down two others and turning it over on downs. Last year, we get embarrassed by Miami on the road and they advance to MAC title. This year, we lose to WMU after leading in fourth quarter and they (likely) advance to MAC title.

(As for JMU, they needed a 4th quarter score to beat 1-10 Georgia State and a iffy Wazzu at home.…like WVU)

It's all about the clutch.

Agree we are probably an 8 win team, but we were looking like that last year too until the Toledo game anyway.

I'm watching the Ohio-Buffalo game and the announcers mention that Ohio is one of only 12 teams in FBS to have the same starting 5 on the offensive line the entire season. According to Bobcat1996 the non-conference schedule of three P4 teams would lead to unrecoverable injuries. Albin then was wise to book a train to Charlotte instead of enduring a murders row in Athens.

Michael — why do you continue to support the program when your friend Tim was hurt so bad. Why don’t you just continue to roam the sideline in Charlotte instead like you did this year?

I am legitimately concerned for your mental wellbeing.

At this trajectory, Albin won't last past 3 seasons at the most.

But like lovebobcat said, who cares? He made his choice. Let's move on.
