Does anyone know how many players we lost to the portal going into this year?
GO BOBCATS
Besides talking about overall numbers of transfers, which include both starters and depth, let's talk about the returning starters we have, not including the bowl game:
Offense: Computes to 2.08 starters back
Titsworth - 12 games
Atkinson - 11 games
Hendricks - 1 game
Dennison 1 game
Defense: Computes to 1.92 starters back
Weaver - 11 games
A. Williams - 9 games
Parodie - 2 games
Henderson - 1 game
Note: also on the roster were Brawley with 9 starts and Wood with 3 starts, but both have been out all season, so count them as extra coaches...
If you looked at any team, and they said they would have 2 starters back on offense, and 2 on defense, you wouldn't expect much, and you certainly wouldn't expect them to be in the running for the championship.
But, it's important to realize that it's not just transfers that made the difference. Players who were on the team last year have stepped up... and not in small numbers. Consider Navarro, Harris, Hendricks, Weatherspoon, Dennison, and M. Williams on offense, and don't just focus on the transfers, Heidecker, Tyus, and Owen.
On defense, it's the same thing. Sure, we have transfers in, like Leake, McNaboe, Doggette, and D. Johnson, but we also have players who have stepped up, such as Henderson, Taylor, Parodie, Walker, and Pearson.
The coaches have done an amazing job of assessing their needs, going out and finding players who can fill those needs, and then uniting all those players to focus on a common goal. This has been an amazing season to watch. This team was not very good against Syracuse or Kentucky or Miami, but as the season has progressed, week by week, they have improved.
