Hey, why don't we put a lot of guys on the field who are All-MAC caliber?!

That's a pretty easy question to answer. It is because Ohio has won games more with teamwork than with individual talent. Their early recruiting classes were generally lower middle of the MAC. Slowly it is improving, and I'd say they are now top third of the MAC. As a result, I'd say that we should see more All-Mac players in the years ahead.

ESPN rankings only typically cover the top 25 teams, so they aren't useful.

2013 8.7/107 Solich/Haines
2014 4.5/95 Solich/Haines
2015 5.0/93 Solich/Haines

Based on my analysis in another thread I would say that the services underestimated the 2008 class and the 2013 class, and overestimated 2011 class.

This will be a much more experienced team than 2014:
LT - McQueen RSr - 20 starts in the last 2 years
LG - Lucas RSr - 24 starts in last 2 years
C - Powell RSr - 23 starts in last 2 years, + Pruehs - 11 starts
LG - Wood RSo -3 starts last year + Gibbons RJr 2 starts
RT - Watson RJr- 15 starts
TE - Mangen Jr - 13 starts last 2 years + Morgan 2 starts
QB - Vick RSr - 8 career starts + Sprauge 5 starts
RB - Ouellette So - 6 starts + Patterson Sr 7 starts
WR - S. Smith 6 starts, Cope 7 starts, Reid 1 start, Walker 2 starts

DE - Basham Jr - 10 starts + Laseak 12 starts
DE - Sayles Jr - 8 starts
NG - Tautuaiki SR - no starts
DT - Purdum RSr - starter in 2012, plus 9 starts last two years
MLB - Poling RSo - 12 starts
WLB - B Brown RJr - 7 starts + C Moore RSo 3 starts
SLB - Johnson RSr - 16 starts + Alexander RSo 1 start
CB - Layton Sr - 3 starts + Bass RSr 18 starts last 2 years, plus 2012
CB - Wells RSr - 15 starts last two years, plus 2012
SS - Scipio RJr may have started some in 2012
FS - Jones RSr - 7 starts + T. Davis R Jr 2 starts

That's an average of about 13 starts per position. With this much returning experience, I think this team should be comparable to the 2009-12 teams.

I feel that most of the positions are pretty solid. QB, we all know the issues, and hope that Vick has no more knee issues. Other than that, NG is my biggest question mark.
I know this will be an unpopular reply but Maybe it's time for us to seriously consider a JUCO QB for next year. Im not sure we have the answer with Sprague and Vick. I would also hate to have a freshman take the reigns with the talent level from the rest of the team.

Good Idea--but I'm less interested in a Juco QB for 2015 than 2016. I'm OK with Vick (he's not great). However, if Duckworth can't pass Sprague or Windham on the depth chart in 2015, this program is in huge trouble for the 2016 season. Can someone explain why I shouldn't be concerned if this is the case.

Quinton Maxwell in another that will be on the roster for 2016, plus they will have 2016 recruits, too, which might include a JUCO at that point.

Hagen and Mayne Williams are both solid, too. Any of the three could earn PT and not surprise me. I believe Jeff Christian plays some Safety as well as Corner, so he's another that could get on the field as a Safety.

I'm fairly sure Carpenter will get approved, but less sure that he will actually be able to play.

Well, you asked for it, here's a way-too-early depth chart, which doesn't take into account any of the 2015 recruits. Note that I have no idea on the wide receivers, especially at WR/F, so no way this is right:

LT - McQueen RSr, Lowery So, Dudziak RFr
LG - Lucas RSr, Everhart RJr, Adams RSo
C - Powell RSr, Pruehs So
RG - Wood RSo, Gibbons RJr, Langenkamp RFr.
RT - Watson RJr, McCray So, Murdock RSo
TE - Mangen Jr, Morgan RSo, Boland RJr, Henry RJr
QB - Vick RSr, Sprague RJr, Windham RJr, Duckworth RFr
RB - Ouellette So, Patterson Sr, Brown RSo, White RFr, Irons RFr
WR/F - Dixon RSr, Sawyer RSr, J.Brown RSo, Meyer RFr
WR/X - S.Smith Jr, Walker So, Brunis So
WR/Z - Cope RSo, Reid RJr, Wilson RJr

DE - Basham Jr, Laseak RJr, Berger RFr
DE - Sayles Jr, Smart RSo, Freuauf RFr
NG - Tautuaiki SR, Aloese RSo
DT - Purdum RSr, Porter RSo, Kuhar RFr
MLB - Poling RSo, Grillot RSo, Dicillo RFr, Makuch RJr
WLB - B Brown RJr, C Moore RSo, Donovan RJr
SLB - Johnson RSr, Daugherty RSo, Alexander RSo
CB - Layton Sr, Bass RSr, Brunson So, Terpin RSr
CB - Wells RSr, Nelson So, Fox RFr, Gunnels RFr
SS - Scipio RJr, Quallen RSo, Macer RSr
FS - Jones RSr, T. Davis R Jr, Cunningham RSo

K - Yazdani RSr, Amicone RJr, Green RSr, Royster Fr
P - Bonnstetter Sr, Venham RJr
LS - Chapman RSr, Shaffer RSo

I'm sure that the above has some serious issues. Have at it. ;)
Thanks. Now I am wondering who will emerge from the winter/spring work as the top left tackle. If Lowery can press McQueen, might McQueen bump Lucas at guard?

Don't forget that you also have two JUCO Offensive Linemen who will have to fit in somewhere, Anderson and Cooper.

Other changes that we know of to the chart above is that Davon Henry has left the team, and Carpenter has returned. The return of Carpenter will probably make the starters at Safety Jones and Carpenter, a duo that Paul will be more comfortable. It will also bump up the number of average starts considerably`from the 13 I listed above, probably to 16 (compared to 2014's 5). Thus next year's starters as of game 1 will have about the same experience as last year's team did in the final game.

Those JUCO OL guys as well as AJ and Irons in the backfield are why I think we are going to have a very good running game in 2015. The OL was young last year, and some guys had a baptism by fire. Now with that experience, plus the experience of what I have to assume are some very good JUCOs, I really do expect that OHIO will be running the ball very effectively next year. That, in turn, will open up the passing game. I'm excited about next season. Go OHIO!

I would agree that going from a very inexperienced and young offensive line last year to what is probably an average one this year, or a bit above average, will make a world of difference. I think that the offense will be back to being able to consistently make yards on the ground, and defenses once again will have to respect the Ohio run game. That, in turn, as OCF mentions, will open up the play action passes. It will also get the TEs back into the offense.

I updated the recruiting rankings in my post above to include the 2015 rankings. Now, here's a slightly updated still way-too-early depth chart for 2015:

LT - McQueen RSr, Lowery So, Dudziak RFr
LG - Lucas RSr, Cooper R-Jr, Anderson R-So
C - Powell RSr, Pruehs So
RG - Wood RSo, Gibbons RJr, Langenkamp RFr.
RT - Watson RJr, McCray So
TE - Mangen Jr, Morgan RSo, Boland RJr, Carter R-Jr
QB - Vick RSr, Sprague RJr, Windham RJr, Duckworth RFr
RB - Ouellette So, Patterson Sr, Brown RSo, White RFr, Irons RFr
WR/F - Reid, RJr, Dixon RSr, Sawyer RSr, J.Brown RSo
WR/X - S.Smith Jr, Walker So,
WR/Z - Cope RSo, Brunis So, Meyer RFr

DE - Basham Jr, Berger RFr
DE - Laseak RJr, Smart RSo
NG - Tautuaiki SR, Aloese RSo, Porter RSo
DT - Sayles Jr, Purdum RSr, Kuhar RFr
MLB - Poling RSo, Grillot RSo, Dicillo RFr, Freuauf RFr
WLB - B Brown RJr, C Moore RSo, Donovan RJr
SLB - Johnson RSr, Daugherty RSo,
CB - Layton Sr, Bass RSr, Fox RFr
CB - Wells RSr, Brunson So. Gunnels RFr
SS - Nelson, So, Carpenter, RSr, Quallen RSo, Macer RSr
FS - Jones RSr, T. Davis R Jr, Scipio RJr, Cunningham RSo, Howell Fr

K - Yazdani RSr, Amicone RJr
P - Bonnstetter Sr
LS - Miller Sr

I'm sure that the above still has some serious issues, especially since I have no clue who is doing better than whom in practice. I'm just trying to get players listed in the right positions, and then guess from who played last year what order they belong in.

Connor Krizancic will be our 2016 starting quarterback. Mark it down. Watched him at Mentor. He is extremely poised, very intelligent, dad was his basketball coach, athletic enough to be a wideout at a Big 10 school and simply has moxie. Dude is going to make an impact.

The fact that I didn't put Krizancic on the depth chart for 2015 isn't a reflection of his standing for 2016, but rather simply that he won't be eligible in 2015.

It seems the roster guy has been busy again, and a number of walkons are no longer on the roster:
Austin Pauley - OL
Clem Vinegar - OL
Cameron Wilson - WR
Donald Lee Harrison - WR
Matt Lawrence - WR
Aaron Shaffer - LS

For every one that becomes all-MAC like Dak Notestine, many more come and go with little notice.

Also, one new name as appeared on the roster, Langston Provitt. Did he enroll early? He doesn't appear on the eDirectory, so it's not clear that he did.

It is not uncommon for walkons to vanish and then later reappear. That happens all the time. All I know is that he's not currently listed on the roster. It could be an error, or it could be a temporary change, or he could be gone.

I wonder if they will issue a depth chart after the Spring game? Usually they don't, but one must exist because it somehow gets leaked to places like CFN, so that's where we usually see the first real depth chart.

Vague memory of a reference to Wilson recovering from an injury. I might be mistaken. I hope Mr. Wilson is well and on track.

For some of these it might be as simple as tuition expense being pricey as a walkon, and having to take the Spring off, in which case they might reappear in the Fall. As I said, that's something you see with walkons at times. It's not the easiest route, and you have to respect the ones that keep at it.

The 2014 two deep offense & defense depth charts for Ohio vs NIU reflected Ohio was much younger, 18 Jr/Sr for Ohio vs 26 for NIU. This is 41% vs 59%. If the above two deep pans out Ohio in 2015 would field 26 Jr/Sr, the same number NIU fielded last season. Much better. I am sure a more in depth review could be made scoring Srs 4 down to Fr 1, but I would leave that for anyone who loves numbers more than I.
