Thanks! This is most helpful.

We've been hit with the injury bug as well. Our O-line has taken the worst of it in my opinion. I believe that has played into some of the offensive issues we've seen late season. We placed only one player on the all-conference first team for offense - center Jesse Chapman.

Our defense has been very strong in most situations and, hopefully, will have a stellar game against Ohio. The Sun Belt defensive player of the year is our defensive end Ronald Blair. He, John Law, and Latrell Gibbs were all first team honorees.

While Marcus Cox is certainly a standout running back, he also can cough up the ball more easily than I like. I would not be surprised to see freshman Jalin Moore eclipse Cox's running efforts in the years ahead.

Finally, our kicking game has been a tale of two kickers in the last two seasons. The irony is that it's been the same kicker both years. Last year Zach Matics missed extra points and short field goals with enough regularity to elicit groans from the fans when any kicking situation arose. This year Zach has been spot on with nearly every kick he's taken. He and punter Bentlee Critcher are fun to watch.

Bottom line is that, as in all games, this one could be lots of fun or heartbreak for either set of fans. See you in Montgomery!

Ohio had no first team all conference players, and only one second team all-conference player, Ian Wells. Ohio has solid players across the board more than individual stars, but it didn't help that many of the best players missed significant portions of the season.

Our backs are an interesting group, and all of them are good, but in different ways, so you'll find a lot of disagreement here over who is the best and/or who should be starting. One thing is that none of them fumble much. Anyway, the choices:
Daz Patterson - compact but solid, fast, quick, a threat in space, but also has good power inside, a Hornung Watch list nominee, also returns kicks, punts, and is a good receiver, plus blocks well
AJ Ouellette - played as a true Freshman last year, great power, deceptively fast, not elusive, but your linebackers will know it when they meet him. He always gets yards after contact, and almost never loses yards, plus he's an outstanding blocker
Papi White - extreme quickness and speed, will make people miss, and will outrun people, an exciting playmaker
Maleek Irons - A redshirt freshman, is the back of the future. He's a big back with outstanding vision and balance. Still a little raw in some areas, but has breakaway potential. I beileve he's out for this game.
Dorian Brown - Another exciting back that can make people miss, and has a lot of potential
Bo Hardy - Exceptional speed, and a hard worker. Plays mostly special teams, but has jets when he has the ball.

In watching some App State, they have an interesting offense. It actually doesn't look dissimilar to Ohio's offense, except that they have a different focus. They work harder on deception as to who they are giving the ball too, and usually have multiple backs. That makes their running game more effective, but takes away from their passing. Ohio does a lot of the same sorts of things, but is more of a 50-50 run pass oriented team.

If Ohio can get ahead of App State early, and/or take away their running game, App State might get uncomfortable on offense.

Per Don's Best, several players have been upgraded to probable:
QB: Sprague
RB: White, Irons, D. Brown, Patterson
S: Macer, Cunningham

Others on the report
Out for the season: Lowery, Nelson, Mangen
Expected to Miss: Bass
Doubtful: C. Brown, Carpenter, Scipio
Questionable: Heitzman, Smart, McCray, Anderson

http://www.donbest.com/ncaaf/injuries /

It looks like QB and RB will be back to full strength, and Safety will get a little help. Of those on the Questionable list, Heitzman is a key guy, and will be missed if he can't play.

Glad to see Irons will probably be available. When I saw that his injury was "Achilles"-related, I assumed he tore a tendon and would be out a very significant amount of time.

Edit: Totally agree about Heitzman, I was hoping he'd be sufficiently healed in time for the game. Kid's a difference-maker.

Having a healthy Poling makes a world of difference. In the 2+ games he was out, we gave up 152 pts. In the nine games he was available for all four quarters, we gave up 146.

Minus Heitzman, ouch. Plus Patterson & White :). Something for those cocoordinators to think about. Short yardage perhaps Kyle Kuhar could be a blocker. Been wanting to see him somewhere. Not trying to say he needs to move ahead of anyone.

Maybe. But, if you do put 8 or 9 in the box, we can throw the ball.

Our QB is not the biggest or fastest, nor does he have the strongest arm. But, he is the team leader & knows what not to do. He rarely forces passes. And, he can run. He is a coaches son (his Dad coached & played at Furman - a Southern Conf. rival), and is a wise and experienced player.

It appears to me that App runs a unique version of the spread option. We would prefer to run out of the spread. Usually those runs come off tackle to one side or the other; then, if the RB can do a cut back at the LOS, then he's off & running into the secondary or beyond.

We will have our best WR out, Meadows suffered a season ending injury (ankle?) a few games back. But, we have others. Malachi Jones can be a handful, 6'2", 210. And, Bobo Beathard & Simms McElfresh are sure handed. They might not be the fastest or the tallest WRs, but they can catch anything. Of late, App has been throwing to TEs. I did not notice many passes to TEs at the first of the season. But, for the last few games, we've had 2 or 3 TEs to catch a number of passes. Perhaps it is easier when they are wide open after being ignored by opponents.

The Cover-4 that Ohio runs is based on the Michigan State Defense of Mark Dantonio/Pat Narduzzi. It may resemble man-on-man, and it may have 8-9 in the box, depending on how App St lines up. In other words, if App State has 9 offensive players in the box, Ohio may also have 9 defensive players there. If App State is lined up with four wide, the Ohio defense will spread out, too.

Since the change to the Cover-4 at the beginning of 2014, it's been either feast or famine. Some teams had done really well against the defense, others have done nothing at all. Some have done both, e.g., Marshall had over 700 yards of total offense against Ohio in 2014, but had only 260 yards this year.

Will App State have 700 yards? 260 yards? I honestly have no idea.

As to total yards App might compile, I have no idea. I would think a more important stat than total yards would be time of possession. And, a more important stat than that is turnovers.

Your D sounds interesting. I'm not sure App has seen such before. It sounds to me like it might be susceptible to the option game, though.

Obviously, the most important stat is the score. (Thank you, Capt. Obvious!)

You've probably seen it in bits and pieces since it's grown in use due to the successes of Michigan State, but Ohio is unusual in that they run it most of the time, like Michigan State. It's a very aggressive defense, and can result in a lot of no-gains and 3 and outs, but can also give up big plays at times.

It will be interesting to see how they fare against the spread option, but I will say that the offense that seems to give it the most trouble is a deep passing attack, but only if the other team is very good at it, such as BG this year, and Marshall last year.

In watching some App State film, it appears they run a Cover-2 with their 3-4 defense, which is the standard pass defense.

Not just Q, but a healthy Blair Brown and Jovon Johnson will make a work of difference. It will be strength against strength. Ohio has an excellent run defense, and App State has an excellent rushing attack.

That seems like a good choice. As the "visiting team" the white shirts are mandated, but Ohio is 6-1 this year in white pants (1-2 in green, 1-1 in black), and 5-1 this year in white helmets (2-2 in green, 1-1 in black).

By the way, I note that per the Josef's Cabin website, the Camellia game is a sellout.

Since Evan Shaw left the athletics department for WOUB, we have not really done the "pump up" videos. I wish they would return!

I think Shaw's replacement, Tanner Smith, is gone now also.
