No concern about qb?
Our starter has not started a game and has thrown only 53 balls (about two games worth) and neither of our backups has played at all.
It could work out but would you design that as ideal...one injury or other situation away from having our total qb package having absolutely no experience at all.
I looked back in Ohio football history, and I don't see any good examples of similar situations. That doesn't mean they don't exist at other schools, nor that they necessarily end badly. Windham is a 5th year Senior who has been around the program a long time, and who has both talent and familiarity with the system. If he can use his maturity and experience together with his natural talent, and can take full advantage of the other offensive talent on the team, he may surprise skeptics. Here are two examples with which I'm familiar, where similar situations arose:
1. Gerry Gdowski (former Ohio football coach, now at Vanderbilt): Played on the Freshman team in 1986 where he was 16-49 for 336 yards. In the next two years, 1987-88, he completed a combined 6-10 passes for 72 yards, and was named the starter for 1989. As a Senior starter with virtually no experience, he was 71-136 passing for 1326 yards with 19 TDs and only two interceptions, an incredible pass efficiency rating of 177.3. Nebraska was 10-2 that season.
2. Keithen McCant - As a fifth year Senior, McCant had never been higher than third on the depth chart prior to becoming the starter mid-way through the first game of 1991. In his four prior years, he was a combined 2-4 passing, for 32 yards, with no TDs and 2 interceptions. In his Senior season, he compled 97-168 for 1454 yards with 13 TDs and 8 interceptions, a pass efficiency rating of 146.5. He led Nebraska to a 9-2-1 record in 1991, and a conference championship, and went on to a successful career in the CFL.
These are nothing more than data points. Fifth year Seniors can perform well, if they can use their maturity and ability well. I'm rooting for Windham to perform well this season, and to surprise skeptics, as did Gdowski and McCant. I believe that Greg can do it, and he has my full confidence.
