Most insightful post of the month/year. Pete's first to paragraphs are on the money.
First how many paragraphs? To? Too? Two?

C'mon, Alan. What does this say about a Muskingum College education. I might have to have my daughter cross Muskingum off her list of potential colleges for next year.

At least you typically get "lose" v. "loose" correct. Might have to work with your buddy, BillyTheCat, on this pair of "loose" homophones.

Is that enough help?
Guess I was overwhelmed by Pete's comments that I forgot correct "two." My bad Steveland. appreciate you keeping OCF and me on our toes.

The mastermind and current head coach Neal Brown was our OC just 1 year prior to when we put 48 points on you guys. He was what laid the groundwork for our offense... we were 3-9 just two years ago and now are 9-3 in year 2.

We also don't even have the full number of scholarship players yet. That says a lot about this staff and once the team is fully rebuilt it's gonna be dangerous

The Dollar General bowl is the #1 bowl for the MAC. They have the longest relationship and have the highest payout of the bowls associated with the conference. Therefore, they get their choice of MAC teams. Obviously WMU was off the table this year. So they selected us S the team they want. They know we will not fill the stands. But hey have Troy for that. Therefore they were looking for the best team. They feel it is us. We can't turn it down. That is not how it works.
The money doesn't really mater . Fairly sure the MAC teams have to split it equally.
It is equally split. But it does make the bowl the first to pick from MAC teams. It doesn't mean we make more money.
We "make" no money on a bowl game. The post season opportunity fund - student fees - subsidizes our bowl appearances.

Coach Neal Brown is giving away 100 free tickets to the first 100 students...that's $4500 out of his own pocket...He's such a classy guy.

Unfortunately the date and time of this game sucks and nobody is going. Will be plenty watching on tv though.

You'd rather travel on Christmas and go to a game at 11 am on Dec. 26?

My mental perception of our football program and its future potential is my own personal delusion of grandeur. I spend quite a bit of time fantasizing over our future in a better place in the collegiate football world.

No offense Troy, Mobile or Dollar General but it is like awakening from that dream where you are always in your underwear.

Must I accept this reality?

Kinda bummed by the reactions here. Mobile has been a faithful bowl partner for a long time and we're managing to sound like a group of entitlement children.

Mobile welcomed the MAC when it was a one-bowl league without a game. The city doesn't half-ass a single aspect of the bowl experience.

The date is a tough go, but those that can make it will have a great time. Wish I was one of them.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what we have displayed as a fan base to be demanding better?
Amen.

Put me in the ok with this bowl berth category.

Sure, I hate the name of the bowl. Sounds chintzy. Mobile is a fun town for our fans that attend. Warm weather, near the Gulf. A Margaritaville or two within driving distance. What's not to love?

I'm proud to have been selected to play there. I think a few of us are over rating our attractiveness to bowls. (Note: replay recent 9-3 game vs akron)

Wish I could make it but I'm at office until 2pm 12/24 this year.

Go Bobcats!

Generally true. However the university's "take" this year will exceed our costs since all bowl money is pooled and the Cotton Bowl allocation will provide a "profit."

Yahtzee.

Fire ants aside, mobile was a great place to have a bowl. Warm weather, nice downtown, liberal open container policies, good food, atmosphere, Parade, etc, All about the bowl for two days. I really loved the date when it was after new year's. 12/23 is terrible. Just. Awful.
+ 10,000

My wife and I would be there if it was on the original January date. A few years ago we even went there in January to see Toledo play. It's a long story, but that was the year that Marshall looked like they were headed for the NY6 bowl, until they got beaten by WKU. My wife had promised to take me to the game as my birthday present that year, and when Marshall didn't make it to a New Year's bowl, we shifted gears and went to Mobile, because we had liked it so much when OHIO played in the old GMAC Bowl there against USM. It's a great place for a bowl game IN JANUARY! BTW, BTC, my wife likes Mobile even without shuttle buses!

I'm in the same boat. That trip in 2007 was so fun if this bowl were on Jan. 6th or 7th like it was 10 years ago, I'd find a way to go. But right before Christmas makes it impossible. Great time to watch it on TV though, so many more X-Mas Ales will also be consumed that night too.

I wonder if the change in play-off format in having these stupid play-off games on New Year's Eve means that the Dollar General Bowl (agreed, it needs amuch better name!) will always be played before Christmas on a permanent basis, or it will it revert back to being played in early January?

You really don't know much about the history of mobile, do you? And, apparently not much about Kentucky, either, or you won't use that slur.
The history of mobile will be more intriguing to 18-21 years olds over warm weather and a beach?
What world do you live in LOL
I know you've already been called out a bunch for this, but I feel the need to do so as well.

You do realize Mobile is less than an hour from the Alabama beaches, right? I mean, I know it's not South Beach--but there is plenty of sand and an ocean.

British Trojan,

What's the rumor circles down there like for Brown leaving? Word here in Cincinnati is that the favorites to replace Tuberville are Jeff Brohm from WKU and Brown. Some fans want Charlie Strong, but I've not seen anything concrete that either party is interested.

Sand and an ocean do not beach weather make. Average temperature at that time of year in Mobile is 10-15 degrees colder than Miami. Big difference if beach time is your goal.

If they would have gotten into the Miami Beach Bowl it would have been an entirely different story.
Wow! Fan of the year right here!

First of all, you do realize that Mobile is a great location in the Gulf Coast region right?

Second, It may be called the "Dollar General" Bowl this year, but I hope you realize that this is a bowl game that has been around for a while.

Third, support your schoo

Sorry, this type of thing drives me nuts! I faithfully attended every game in college... during the Knorr years! Would have loved an opportunity like this!
Yes, you're right. I should waste my time going to Alabama 2 days before Christmas to go watch the best team of the MAC East (the worst division in major college football) play against Troy?.
No thanks.

I reserved hotels for Mobile on the 23rd and Shreveport on the 26th to maybe pull off a two bowls in one trip with some New Orleans or Biloxi in between but all the negative I'm seeing online from the usually positive Ohio and Vandy fans about these bowls is making me unsure about doing it.

Tornado warnings all afternoon and up until game time last time we were in Mobile for the GMAC Bowl vs Southern Mississippi.
Tried to play some tennis but too humid to do anything while there.

We played golf the day before and the day of the game - not one drop of rain. It was a fun time. The military induction ceremony was a bit odd and the display of Gone With the Wind style dresses was certainly a cultural experience. All in all a very good time in early January.

Did you notice, perhaps, one big change from the GWTW era, Alan? About half of the young ladies in those 19th dresses were African American. This ain't your grandfather's Alabama.

Alex, I'll take "Douchebag Fanbases" for $2,000.

The clue: This recently added Douchebag Fanbase attended its first modern era bowl game in 2007, and in ten short years and despite still only having a budget in the middle of the pack in the MAC, they quickly felt entitled and superior to most if not all of its G5 brethren and the bowl games in which they participate.

What is OHIO Bobcats fans?

We have become them which I despise.

+1, we don't have the consistent bowl wins to even possibly feel that way. Even if we did I'd hate to be that way. Makes it seem we have more in common with Marshall fans, which makes me shutter...

I don't think it's entitlement as much as it is frustration with the system. In 2006, I pulled my kids out of school for the MAC Championship game, as well as a week in January to attend the GMAC Bowl in Mobile. We did everything Mobile had to offer and had a great time even though Southern Miss won easily. I've gone to all the other MACC games and some of the bowls since then, but I didn't go to Detroit last week and I'm not going to Mobile this year.

My reason is that I've hit a wall and I'm just not excited about the program receiving a Dollar General Bowl bid like I was in 2007. The bowl games take anyone with a pulse, few of the matchups are exciting, the games are not held in interesting places worthy of a 3-4 day vacation, the dates are inconvenient, and the participants are not announced until 2-3 weeks before the game, which makes travel a lot more expensive. Attendance and ticket sales would say I'm in the majority with this opinion.

I'm jealous of the other teams that got bids to games in Florida. I'm jealous of the flash in a pan success that WMU and NIU have enjoyed recently that landed them in huge games. It is possible to hit it big occasionally in the MAC, but while Ohio remains out of the basement of the conference, we're not invited to any of the big parties. I have little reason to believe we can go 13-0 or stay ranked all season with the current staff.

It's not a knock on Mobile. It's a knock on the MAC. The Dollar General name justifies to the rest of the nation viewing us as part of a lower quality, convenient, cheap alternative to college football. And if we are arrogant enough to think Troy is a dull opponent, imagine what Troy thinks about having to play Ohio.
