As a student currently enrolled here at OU, you couldn't pay me to go watch the Dollar General Bowl in Alatucky..
If they would have gotten into the Miami Beach Bowl it would have been an entirely different story.
Wow! Fan of the year right here!

First of all, you do realize that Mobile is a great location in the Gulf Coast region right?

Second, It may be called the "Dollar General" Bowl this year, but I hope you realize that this is a bowl game that has been around for a while.

Third, support your schoo

Sorry, this type of thing drives me nuts! I faithfully attended every game in college... during the Knorr years! Would have loved an opportunity like this!
Yes, you're right. I should waste my time going to Alabama 2 days before Christmas to go watch the best team of the MAC East (the worst division in major college football) play against Troy?.
No thanks.

I reserved hotels for Mobile on the 23rd and Shreveport on the 26th to maybe pull off a two bowls in one trip with some New Orleans or Biloxi in between but all the negative I'm seeing online from the usually positive Ohio and Vandy fans about these bowls is making me unsure about doing it.
That actually sounds like a GREAT trip to me! 2 bowl games and Bourbon St. to boot? That's a no-brainer IMHO.

I know folks are throwing this bowl and Dollar General under the bus.

Unfortunately (because of money), this bowl gets first pick of all the available MAC teams. I guess it sucks they view OHIO as the most attractive selection. But then isn't that what we strive for? Had we won last Friday, we would be playing in... The Dollar General Bowl in Mobile. We can blame the MAC, but for what? Aligning with a bowl whose sponsor is a company people from Athens and SE Ohio don't respect? Really? Athens and SE Ohio is their demo.

Everyone should be a bit hesitant before throwing these stores too far under the bus. In the south and rural areas they are vital to commerce in the community (and they love football). Additionally, here in Matthews, NC we are the headquarters of Family Dollar. The Levine family has almost single handed funded the Levine Children's Hospital and, like General Dollar, are often the first to the table in local communities (where they have stores), when need arises. They make a to ton of money and give back.

Just saying.

Does the date suck? For attendance yes for us, but that is why (from a business standpoint) they selected Troy. For television. it is actually a pretty good slot.

Kinda bummed by the reactions here. Mobile has been a faithful bowl partner for a long time and we're managing to sound like a group of entitlement children.

Mobile welcomed the MAC when it was a one-bowl league without a game. The city doesn't half-ass a single aspect of the bowl experience.

The date is a tough go, but those that can make it will have a great time. Wish I was one of them.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what we have displayed as a fan base to be demanding better?
Alex, I'll take "Douchebag Fanbases" for $2,000.

The clue: This recently added Douchebag Fanbase attended its first modern era bowl game in 2007, and in ten short years and despite still only having a budget in the middle of the pack in the MAC, they quickly felt entitled and superior to most if not all of its G5 brethren and the bowl games in which they participate.

What is OHIO Bobcats fans?

We have become them which I despise.

Being an Ohio Bobcats fan includes being okay with mediocre performances on the field, supporting a coaching staff that tops out at 8 wins a season, and being the 4th or 5th best team in the state of Ohio. Coming in 112 out of 128 FBS schools in recruiting is encouraging, also.

So yes. Wanting OU to succeed like NIU or WMU makes me a douche bag. OU has so much more to offer than Kalamazoo, yet they're going to the Dollar General Bowl. I realize for some of you that may be flattering and something to hang your hat on. Meanwhile Western Michigan is gearing up to play against a team that just lost the Big Ten championship and the #8 team in the country.

Keep being a keyboard warrior calling 20 year old college students "douche bags" for having an expectation for their football team. Meanwhile, I'll laugh at your mediocre comments and opinions.

I somewhat enjoyed visiting Mobile, but have to admit, I was expecting a little bit more of, well, maybe everything. Decent place to visit but I probably won't ever be back. The stadium situation felt really odd to me. It's a pretty bland venue and in a very strange location. I also expected it to be closer to downtown but it sort of sits in a weird place. You're driving along in a residential area then all of a sudden this plot of land pops up with a stadium on it. It felt and looked like a county fairground to me. This is the stadium that South Alabama uses as its home field, and after being in it, I can see why they want to build their own on-campus stadium to get out of it. And when you compare the other destinations and/or opponents that the rest of the MAC got, yeah, I was disappointed.

I really hope one of three things happens in the next ten years:

-Either an expanded playoff that allows all 10 conferences a shot at the national title or an expanded playoff that has a clause in it to allow one G5 member a spot in the playoffs.

-The bowl system to shrink by about 10-25%.

-The bowl system gets rid of the ridiculous conference tie-ins and just tries to take whoever they want and can get.

You know what sucks? Yeah Mobile gets first choice and they don't even have the largest payout of the MAC bowls. The Miami Beach Bowl does.

I'm just waiting for a bowl game to happen in London. It's coming I'm sure. NFL is playing more games out there as it's getting more popular.

Here's a video of us at Ladd playing USA this year... we had 31,000 in attendance for this game on a weeknight...we outnumbered the USA fans at their home stadium

Wow. I was at the very same game and same city you were and my experience was totally different. Loved every minute of it. Met lots of Bobcat fans, had loads of fun bar hoping, visited a beach, a museum, the U.S.S. Alabama, met some very nice Southern Miss fans and students (one Southern Miss student told me about her father's "oil money", I'm thinking OK-next round's on her). Living in Cleveland, I'm a sucker for anywhere with palm trees. And somewhere where it's 70 degrees in January is greatly appreciated!

Yeah the stadium wasn't anything fantastic (they have added some luxury boxes since). Not sure we can say anything though; Peden is no great shakes itself.
