I think we sent Paxton Bergdoll there as well, hopefully the kid can get his grades up and play. Christian tweeted that he is coming back.

Based on what I read, I like this team. It doesn't have any crazy-good areas like last year's defensive line (other than maybe special teams), but what I like best is that in every area it seems solid, and it seems to have no weak area. If each player group does it's job, and they play together as a team, they will will a lot of games.

Depth.

I'm hoping that new blood will provide the depth we need.

Yep. The late season is going to be a challenge if we can't get/stay healthy on the OL and DL.....

Fair enough. I agree with you that depth is a potential problem. I see very good players as backups, but they are mostly redshirt Freshmen and Sophomores. If I'm right, and they are very good, that bodes well for the years ahead. If I'm wrong and they aren't that good, that and youth as a combo will mean a huge drop off to the second strong.

Personally I think Ohio is about due for a year without a lot of serious injuries. The last few years have been pretty bad. If Dak is doing a better job than Sano, we should start seeing the results. I do notice that when they updated the weights on the new online roster, a lot more players gained 5-10 pounds then usual.

Russ reports from first scrimmage

Had a chance to check out the scrimmage today. Talent all over the field. Willie Cherry really impressive. Battle for QB spot looks interesting. Rourke had the two nicest throws of the day. But it's hard to evaluate how the QBs are reading the defenses and how they'll fare in the running game (since they can't be hit).

I was impressed by Julian Ross, the freshman RB from KC. I think he will contribute this year and help AJ and Dorian in the backfield. Not only a great runner, but caught the ball out of the backfield as well. Great sign for the offense.

I'm also worried about depth on the DL. OL looked good, Redshirt freshman Nick Sink impressed me again today. Took some first string reps.

It sounded like, from Arkley's blog, that the freshmen, Caesar and Coleman are huge objects, and might push to be that depth.

DL depth is a real concern of mine with the injury to Shallman and Miller. It is good hearing that a handful of guys from this recruiting class are going to make redshirt situations interesting. I'm not shocked about Coleman and Ross.

Will anyone be in Athens attending the scrimmage Thursday morning? I assume it will be open to the general public like the last

If we are going to be successful we will need a healthy D-line. We will need Aloese, Smart and Robbins there and rotate other guys in as well. Our linebackers will be fine and our DB's, even without Williams, will still be rock solid with Ellis, Hagan, Miller, Nelson, Fox, Gullett, and the Motleys. Williams would be great but I think we can substitute several guys in and stay fresh. I wouldn't be surprised to see freshmen like Mitchell and Drake in the lineup as well. Remember last year our DB's were a question mark and we ended up with MAC Freshman of the Year and someone I think will be a First Day NFL Draft Pick someday.

“(Williams) is going to get another MRI, but he’s had an injury that has prolonged itself and never really healed — as we understand it — the way it should have healed,” Solich said.

“He looks doubtful right now”

I think these 2 will be keys.

As mentioned above staying fresh will be important and these 2 will be in the rotation and will wear some offensive linemen out.

Hate to hear that about Williams. We have the numbers at CB...we just need some cream to come to the top.

I'm planning on sneaking down bright and early to the scrimmage. Not sure how long I can stay but that's my plan.

My 9-year-old and I were in Athens last Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, we were walking around the stadium and we heard activity in the Walter Fieldhouse. So we walked over and the Bobcats were practicing. The side doors were open so we were standing there watching and Javon Hagan comes over and asks my son to play catch with him. When they finished practice, Chris Rodgers came over and thanked us for coming. We hit the scrimmage on Friday and there were some  kids from Camp Boost there. After the team huddled at the end, they all turned around and thanked the kids for coming. So fans are welcome.

I feel I post this during every fall camp and I'm sure every team deals with this but injuries like Miller, season ending, Shallman and Mayne Williams are so disheartening. I'm hoping the Odom, and Wood injuries along with some of the others don't cause them to miss the start of the season.

We certainly seem to have more prolonged and season ending injuries than most teams and its derailed a season on more than one occasion before. Fingers crossed.
