I know alot can happen between now and next year, but if everyone returns...how does a true freshman like Caris get any minutes? Is a red-shirt a strong possibility here?

I'd say he gets a red-shirt, barring a defection or injury.  There just isn't going to be any minutes for him on the wing especially with Offutt, Kellogg, Johnson, and Hall all being jr's and sr's.  Even if Goard is in fact leaving, he was only averaging 7.3 mpg.  Giving Rico and Hall 3.7 more mpg isn't exactly asking much.  I would guess they red-shirt LaVert, make sure he's ready and that he knows it could be pulled at any minute, but that they intend to red-shirt him the full year.

It just makes too much sense to red-shirt LaVert with this veteran laden team and with how stacked we should be on the wing.  There's no reason to waste a year of his eligibility if he's only going to play 5 mpg.

and as has been mentioned before, Caris could use a year to build up his body/strength.  He doesn't appear to be 6'4", either...closer to 6'2".  I've seen him play twice, and I am not certain he is physically ready for major college basketball.

Good point as well Bruce.  One other thing I just thought of.  Green was listed as a PF/SF on scout.com coming out of high school, PF on rivals, PF on espn recruiting profile, and simply forward on Missouri's site and Missouri's roster.  I think most are assuming he will strictly play PF, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him play some SF in a lineup with Cooper, Offutt / Kellogg, Green, Baltic, and Keely.  This would only mean fewer minutes available on the perimeter.

Curious...Have we ever had a worthy contributor at Ohio basketball that had a redshirt year?  I've only been around about 13 years and I don't ever recall one.

I understand the thought process for the red shirt, it will be very very tough for him to find minutes...But I'm not sure redshirting guys is as easy as we may think, especially players as talented as Caris.

Good take here. Would love to know the last great OHIO red-shirt player as well. Not one comes to my mind.

Non injuriy-related, only Dustin Ford comes to mind.

caris was 6 for 10 from the floor with 13 points in the semi final.

This morning, he was named The Dispatch co-player of the year and All- Metro

by the way, i hope we are looking at his sophomore teammate 6'4" Jae'Sean Tate.  Seen him play twice, and he apparently had a great game in the semi final.  he could develop into a prize...

Caris was one of the players mentioned on ESPN.com as a standout at the Ohio state tournament.  The linkfor the article from the main recruiting page is actually "Bobcat on Fire".  Here is the part about Caris:

Caris Levert (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central)
2012, SG, 6-5, 185 pounds
College: Ohio
He is one of the most improved players in Ohio. He was a 5-9 guard as a freshman and has continued to grow physically and from a talent standpoint. Caris is very good off the dribble, has the ability to create his own shot and has a chance to be a special talent at the next level if he continues to improve.

One of BA's long-time posters has a signature asking something like "can anyone hit a pull-up jumper?" The answer is now yes, as in Caris LaVert. He can break down a defender off the dribble, stop on a dime, go straight up and hit from mid-range to 3-pt. range. He has long arms, which I love in a basketball player. Only needs to bulk up to be a strong addition to our roster.

He reminds me a little of Jalen Rose, or a little Jalen Rose, in that I think he's stronger than he looks. He also appears to loaf at times, but then pulls the quickest thievery I've seen in awhile. No worries about height either. He's as tall as jerry Francis.

Beat me to it by 10 minutes.

They had some very positive things to say.  A talent that really blossomed in his senior year.  Take a look at it on JJ Huddle.

I love that every other player that has won that award went to wither OSU or Michigan.

Caris is a big time recruit.

It appears that way, esp when you look at the names of the previous winners

He signed a letter of intent so he can't just go away.  He would have to be released or set out one year.

Usually in these cases, if the player requestes to be released from LOI, then he is released and can be back on the open market.
