The interesting thing is that there are others who are winning the appeal to play immediately rather than sit a year. I don't know their circumstances, but I'd like to believe, given a injury redshirt year, that Kenny has a reasonable argument for his appeal.

I know. I read this story:

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/09/29/unl.../

This kid is playing in his fourth college in four years (granted one year was JUCO), but the process for granting waivers is not very clear.

Greg Ianni is also up there. One would hope he would remember his days here. But then he wasn't a big fan of the OZone of the day.

I'm glad this waiver business is going away after the season.

Was there an Ozone in Ianni's days at Ohio?

Any specific evidence of Ianni not being a fan of the student fan club back in his day? I can't think of any. :)

I suspect Greg I. is still searching for that huge paw print flag that used to hang from the center of the Convo ceiling. I also suspect that Seinfeld's "Newman!" rants were all based on Greg's feelings about a certain Youngstown Bobcat who led the Crazy Cats in the early 1980s.

He's allowed to practice all season with the team even if he's not ruled eligible to play in games.

This article from today's NY Times is about a Division 1 woman transferring to another Division 1 school and being allowed to compete without a year on the pines. There was controversy, but eventually a decision was made after the relinquishing coach finally relinquished her grip and allowed it to happen. Is Izzo the main force here? Could he make this happen? Our people (read: Saul) need to get this basically decent man to do a basically decent thing!!

Thanks, Jeff. Isn't it kinda strange, though, that there's been plenty of time to make a decision and it's a different/more serious stage now that practice has started--Are they gonna wait until the day before the first game? At some point it impacts the team's prep.

Well, Monroe, if Bball Jones knows what he's talking about on the Final Roster thread on the basketball forum it's possible the team knows the answer now. I know it's rather shocking that that team might know before the BA gurus like you and me. I guess we are slipping . . . :-)

Not the same issue at all. The NY Times story is about a student who had completed course work, received degree, and wanted to pursue graduate degree and play hoops at another school. She complained that her original program was prohibiting her from doing so, which that program confirmed. She was not kicked off the team.

Kaminski was not a graduate student transfer. He was basically kicked off the MSU team. Kaminski has NOT PUBLICLY INDICATED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM that his former coach is hindering his request for eligibility. Neither has Kaminski indicated publicly what hardship he is facing that should allow him immediate eligibility at Ohio.

Further, while there is conjecture (mainly on this board) there is no evidence to suggest Izzo cares one way or the other about Kaminski's eligibility. If Saul thought it would help to talk to Izzo, don't you think he'd have found a way to do so a long time ago?

Let me ask you this: What is Kaminski guilty of? You say he was "basically" kicked off the team. What does "basically" kicked off the team mean? Why was he kicked of the team? Was he arrested? No. Was he academically ineligble? I don't believe he was. Coaches can kick guys off the team for pretty much any reason. Coaches kick guys off the team because they don't think they will help them win all the time. Kaminski is guilty of what? What has Kenny Kaminski done that should prevent him from showcasing his talents this year?

It has been speculated, mostly on the MSU board, that Kaminski wasn't performing in the classroom. However, based on Izzo's release, I think Kaminski was not ineligible by NCAA or school standards. IF Kaminski hadn't been eligible with the NCAA, Izzo would have stated he was not academically eligible. Easy. But Izzo DIDN'T say that. In fact, earlier last season, Izzo said something along the lines of "Kaminski wasn't anywhere close to being ineligible."

Though I don't know the facts, that doesn't stop me from speculating. From the tone of Izzo's dismissal remarks it seems likely to me that Izzo and Kaminski had a major personality conflict. In one story I read, Izzo was quoted as saying, in reference to Kenny, that he'll soon learn that it's "my way or the highway."

This is getting frustrating.
Any clue as to when the NCAA makes a decision?
Is there a deadline date?

This is the kind of frustrating thing that the NCAA does to smaller leagues. You can't be telling me that if it were a matter of Kaminski transferring to Duke or UConn or Louisville that they would be taking this much time? Kaminski's eligibility for OU helps the mid-majors but the NCAA wants to eradicate us. This sucks.

I think it's everyone. Enes Kanter was suspended in mid-November 2010 and had his appeal rejected in early January of 2011. Last year, two UNC players were in limbo. I agree there should be a deadline that says if you get your appeal in by X date that you'll get an answer by October 15th.

But, if as alleged by another poster, Izzo has signed off on the waiver, then it should be cut and dried and the grant of the waiver should be announced soon. Right?

If, on the other hand, the other poster's statement is not correct and Izzo is fighting it the appeal might take so long that Kaminski's eligibility this year becomes a "moot point."

I'm pretty sure it was more than a "personality conflict." Coaches (Izzo included) have had those sorts of things that led to players leaving the program but it's not normally handled as a "dismissal" nor does a coach like Izzo take such a pointed tone. I'm not going to say anything about Kenny because I don't know details and certainties but I'll say this - when Izzo booted Chris Allen, Izzo's constant line preceding was "he needs to be a better teammate." That was a discretionary shorthand to refer to a number of significant, private transgressions. I don't think Kaminski was handled in the manner he was because he simply didn't see eye-to-eye with Izzo.

Ben Emelogu transferred from VaTech to SMU this summer after a coaching change and was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play this year without sitting out. Besides being from the Dallas area there was no specific reason given for his transfer. I would hope this bodes well for KK but the NCAA is so inconsistent I don't know if one case is an indicator of another. Funny they didn't grant Simmon's request, he's also a sophomore moving closer to home after a coaching change, and he was moving away from a coach with a terrible reputation.
