I clicked on the Twitter accounts listed, followed some threads and I agree with the reaction.  I've never associated with higher level, intercity AAU types representing 3-4 star recruits, BUT my hunch is that badgering them and provoking them to anger is probably not the route to take if you want to build good-will.  My guess is that they'll turn to their inner pride and really not want to even (double) reconsider their LOI.  Also agree that fans have no place in contacting these types personally, but if they feel compelled, I think the opposite approach would be warranted--encourage them that Ohio is STILL the right place.  As I glanced through the exchanges never once did I get the impression that the points being made by our fans encouraged the Owens group to possibly think, "you know, maybe we do need to at least pause a moment and listen."  Quite the contrary, I would guess they were thinking more along the lines, "go screw yourself Ohio."  Thank can't help as it probably only reconfirmed the direction they're leaning/going.

If you really feel the need to badger them, I'd only do that after they're out of the LOI and onto another school.  These fans didn't do anything to help Saul's chances and probably hurt them siginificantly though they're the voice of the minority.  #badmove

Love was pointing out spelling/grammar mistakes to the dude...generally just being a complete bully and idiot.

Love needs to get a hold of his life and realize that he's arguing with a basketball coach (that he's never met and will never meet) on twitter about where an 18 year old will go to college. Good lord man...find something to do!

For those who are without twitter, his dad tweeted that they will meet with coach Phillips on Sunday. At least a step in the right direction.

Just to provide the twitter link for what Tim said so anyone can read further on in the conversation. Once again there is a Bobcat fan unnecessarily interacting with Tariq's dad.

This is what I could pull together right now. Looks like Bobcat Love may have deleted some of his tweets...

  1.

meeting with Coach Phillips on Sunday. We always wanted to do this the right way

  2. Glad to hear it! AAU DW started the hostility w/ his own agenda. Ohio will always treat TO the right way. DW helping TO or DW?

  3. DW is well established he doesn't need Tariq. He is great at what he do and well respected in the basketball community

  4. DW has helped Tariq and continues to help with his recruiting. DW is all about his kids never want them in a bad situation

  5. I'll take tie word for it. Everyone has an off day. Good luck. Go Cats!

The twitter conversation (much deleted) started with BL and Tariq's adviser/AAU coach.   It became contentious (BL telling the adviser he was an example of everything that is wrong with college sports today and that it was pathetic that the advisor was latching on to Tariq).  Tariq's father then got involved and it took a very wrong turn after this tweet:
20h sir if you knew me or my son you would know that know one is in his ear but me his FATHER. Dwayne advises me

Love then pointed out that it was "no one" not "know one" and stated he would need to "take a shower" after having this conversation.

Looks like Love then reached out  (assume he realized his emotions got the best of him) as there was a peace pipe:
Renard buys houses ‏@eljefe132  17h That's understood it's nothing personal. No hard feelings I'm passionate about my son and his future as well

Doubt we have/had a chance of holding the kid anyway, and no mature adult would allow a back and forth on twitter with a random fan to influence a decision.   But does illustrate that conversations with recruits and their family should be left to the coach.

Impossible not to have irony saying this on a college basketball recruiting board.

It was stupid to confront Tariq's dad or coach. The unfortunate thing is that the kid is getting bad advice. He will sign the with a bigger school bringing the AAU coach some notoriety but that won't help with Tariq's development. Ohio is a great place for any kid, just look at all the kid's we have sent overseas or to the NBA to earn six figures contracts.  Most of these kids  were not highly thought of coming out of high school, just think about what we could do with Tariq. Sometimes this gets lost on the kids and their families. Hopefully, Tariq goes to a university where he can play and be developed. He is a talent but he has already left his academy because of playing time and touches. College is a whole different animal, Tariq is in a great position at Ohio, he will have the opportunity to play and have a professional career like Brandon Hunter, Gary Trent, Terren Harbrut, Patrick Flomo, Reggie Keely, Ivo Baltic, Devaugn Washington and other recent bigs. We give bigs a place where they can learn and advance. We have recently beat Georgetown, Michigan and others in the tournament. Tariq is in a great class with Wigginton and Crute and Morillo. One more thing, I understand we are a top ten journalism school, stop being nerdbaskets, correcting everybody's grammar. This is a sports site not an English class.

Fixed.

PROTIP:There is a time and place for everything.  For example, if you are in a meeting with a client and they use improper grammar, you don't interrupt and correct them.  It's insulting.

Playing grammar cop to a recruit's father is also insulting.

I don't usually look much at the recruiting board because deep down I think that where a high school student that I don't know wants to go to school is any of my business.  But having seen on the other board that someone had tweeted Owen's father I had to see what was up and now I have to say its really, really none of our business.  Other that I can't really blame Arkley for asking to verify what his AAU coach publically stated, I can't believe what I'm reading.  Even in terms of what chance Ohio had of getting him to stay I doubt that anyone in the athletic department appreciated it

I have to say in what little I can gather of his father he seemed pretty together considering.  I can't imagine how sick someone with a big-time recruit son would get of people who don't "know him outside of a four star ranking" trying to stick their nose their business.

I think BOBCAT LOVE way overstepped his bounds .... what he did could not have made anyone in the athletic department happy !! .... what an unfortunate situation !! .... Coach Saul Phillips comes into a situation which is going to be difficult in the first place, and BOBCAT LOVE makes things way worse !! .... Our place as fans is not to communicate w/ players parents and definitely not to critique the way someone is raising their child or judge the decisions they're making .... BOBCAT LOVE was wrong for what he did .... I noticed he has deleted all of the posts of him bantering w/ father and coach .... ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS !!!!

Sadly enough if Direct TV had a secret pay-per-view feed of Sauls meeting with the T.Owens contingent today I'd probably pay to watch that exchange.

Arkley obviously gets a pass as in its his job to ask questions and as a father they do enjoy speaking to paid professionals about their sons. But this other clown is really whats wrong with college sports not Tariq his father or coaches. Seriously out of line.

Considering that his screen name name is also on this board I think a ban should be in order.  His actions would also reflect directly on the board, not just the fan base.

I'm excited too guys, but it's only a verbal. Hope he can keep the vultures off him for the next 5 months.

It's still better than a verbal to Temple.

Interesting to read back through the thread - we are now at 10 Months! And can you believe Temps is in the mix!

With all the hoopla about letting him out of his LOI it is interesting to me
that we haven't heard anything about that since the meeting Sunday.
I wasn't  anticipating hearing about his final commitment this soon
but I did think the LOI issue would have been announced or at least there
would be more noise about getting released. Not sure what to make of the silence
there?
