That one crazy fan

I would imagine he is giving this some serious thought.  While we might think that it's easy to make a decision like this, it isn't.  Deciding which school you want to play for does take serious pondering because you have to weigh the pros and cons of the choices.  Will he get playing time right off the bat at another school?  If so how much?  Is the coach known for sending players to the NBA (while our program doesn't have that notoriety, we do send many players to European leagues where they do well).  He also has to take into consideration the schooling that each school offers.  Yes he may very well be bound for the NBA or has his sights set on that but what if he wants that degree as well?  Does the school offer a lot in academics or are they just sports oriented.  Just up and changing your mind on a school takes a lot of consideration and despite what his coach has been saying he's probably been thinking on this a lot more than has been said.

With all the hoopla about letting him out of his LOI it is interesting to me
that we haven't heard anything about that since the meeting Sunday.
I wasn't anticipating hearing about his final commitment this soon
but I did think the LOI issue would have been announced or at least there
would be more noise about getting released. Not sure what to make of the silence
there?
Maybe the silence you refer to could mean that Saul did a nice sales job on why he should still come to Athens. Maybe?

Saul himself says he has a program, not a magic wand.  We can't expect him to work miracles with a "sales job."  This young man is going to do what he wants to do.

Matt Barnes from NBC4 here.

Just got done talking with Tariq's dad back and forth on Twitter. He said that Ohio is still in the running and that they are still making a decision. The biggest worry right now is simply they have no relationship with the current staff. He mentioned 30 days ago, they were "all in" to packing up for Ohio but this changed everything. They are still talking to members of the staff, team and even fellow commits gathering information they need before they decide. He said he'd let me know when they make a decision but gave no timetable or whether they are leaning any direction.

MY OPINION: The fact that after meeting with Saul on Sunday, he is still torn tells me he is seriously thinking about coming to Ohio still. He may genuinely like Athens but you can't blame a kid for wanting to be comfortable with the coaches that he'll be spending the next 4 years with. You can't just do that with one meeting. So it behooves (love that word) him to weigh all options before making a decision.

If I hear anything else, I'll update you all on this thread.

I'm not necessarily expecting a "sales job", but my point is that he could have convinced him that Ohio is still a great place to be even though JC and his staff are no longer here.  To me, that's a bit of selling.

Thanks for posting.

I agree with your opinion on this issue. As much as I would like to have recruiting firmed up at this point that just is not realistic when we go through a quick coaching change. Gonna have to be patient waiting here.

Arkley's tweets seem to think he doesn't think TO will be a Bobcat.

I am still hopeful. Maybe Saul can have Rod give him a call...

I think his dad Retweeting the article about Tariq being one of the top uncommitted players is much more telling than anything arkley has said.

It could very well be true that he is not coming.

It could also be that he his Dad is just proud that someone is saying his son is at the top of the list (along with others).

We should know soon enough what's up.

no word on a decision the day after the meeting with Saul was a good sign, no word 4 days later is not.

This is probably true.  I want to add something sarcastic here, but I'll stifle myself.  However, I will suggest you look back at Saul's strange wording about his meeting with TO and family.

Just a baseless, off-the-cuff prediction:  TO will attend more than one college in the next 4 years.

I think we need to stop obsessing on what this kid decides to do.  He just needs to do whatever he thinks is best for him-if he wants out of his LOI, great.  It is his life after all.  No crime in not wanting to attend Ohio; it's not for everyone.

Besides, do we even know if he's a good fit in Coach Phillips' system?  Maybe he's a round peg in a square hole here, I don't know.  Like Borna's said several times in other threads, its just time to move on with what we have and go from there.

I agree we should stop obsessing, however, if a player like Tariq doesn't fit in Coach Phillips' system, then maybe we didn't get the right coach? What coach couldn't/wouldn't use a 6'9" athletic forward with a little bit of touch on his shot.

Ultimately, Phillips will judge Tariq on his willingness to play and develop at Ohio and that is the final decision.

the final decision is up to TO, not Phillips, I just hope the drama gets over soon and we all can move on
