We scored 10 pts over the last 10 and a half minutes and 1 pt over the last 6 minutes. We completely fell apart when X went zone.

Question for the b-ball gurus on the board. Why not play Kirk at small forward. His strength in scoring is around the rim, he plays bigger than his 6’4 frame he already rebounds and no one has to defend his outside shot.

Could Preston run the point and let Kirk play more to his strength underneath?

Home from the game...

Good news is we moved thee ball pretty well. Bad news, still not really sure what we were trying to accomplish. Good news, first 32 minutes were pretty decent. Bad news, why don't we get Carter the ball more in the second half when we were on the ropes? Only five shots. Question for Saul, why was carter on Marshall? Our big and kinda slow guy vs their quickest most athletic guy? Second question, I saw the Oakland vs X game. Oakland plays man to man 98% of the time but against X they went zone the whole second half and it paid off. X is just too good athletically vs a team like ours. It was so easy for them to go 1v1 and win the battles. Sometimes, changing to a zone helps...like when X went zone on us in the second half and we didn't score for a few minutes. Third question, do you think some of our player combinations on the floor were really bad? Like having Carter and Kirk out at the same time?

I also saw the Miami vs X game and I do think we can beat Miami. Having said that, I think this team has a long way to go. Just not sure there is enough talent there to be any better than 50-50 in the MAC.

Re: 50/50 in the MAC, is there anyone besides Buffalo that you've seen that is that much better in the MAC thus far? I lean towards no.

We're playing without Dartis and Gollon. You fair weather fans are pathetic. Quit watching and following if it's so bad. It's a damn game .. not life and death.
Then why are you getting so bent out of shape over a message board comment?

If it's just a game, why get fired up over someone that isn't all-in on Saul Ball?

And if it's just a "damn game", why is Ohio paying the coach over half-a-million dollars/year?

From what I can tell this looks to be the idea once Preston gets up to speed. By MAC play, we'll probably see more combos of Preston at the point and some version of TK, Gollon/Dartis, Block, Cowart and BVP at the 2-3.

I know people on this board like to complain about our lack of recruiting good players, but this staff does do a great job at recruiting versatile guys. Most of the guys on the team can probably play at least two positions, sometimes three.

I would argue Toledo.....looking the part early and often of at least being a solid #2

Here's a newsflash: If we're still here and still complaining, we are decidedly NOT fair weather fans. It's been raining on Bobcat basketball for a number of years now.

No surprises in the outcome. We played well for only 30 minutes and the game is 40 minutes.
As I stated before this season started we have too many hills to climb; 2 veteran players out with injuries, 2 players coming back from major injuries last year, & 6-7 new players to blend in.
These types of teams struggle on the road and so far we have lost all our road games this year, and we have 11 more of these.
Realistically we will be lucky to have a .500 season.

I agree, and it's a shame given the talent on the roster. Saul deserves credit for recruiting guys like Carter and BVP, but he also deserves blame for guys who have either regressed or show no signs of coach-ability under his tutelage. That's been a recurring theme during every season he's been here.

Well the wheels sure came off after we were down just 5 with 6 minutes left. Right up till then I was optimistic and thinking we had a good chance to pull off the upset against a solid Big East team. But Xavier was deeper and their one guard was just a beast there for a stretch. The zone did us in. And 1-7 from three by Block and Vander Plas didn't help either.

We are playing without 2 starters. Dartis and Gollon would definitely make a difference, and definitely against a zone. Phillips is cursed with these injuries every year. Cursed I say. Cursed....

Nice to see Preston shoot the ball. Would like to have seen Cowart try to be a little more aggressive on offense. Both seems to be improving each game.

Hoping to take 3 of the next 4 and roll into MAC play with some positive mojo going.

On to Radford.

Also, when looking back at the game, have to take into account that one of,if not their best starters was out with the flu.

Agreed. And without Dartis/Gollon in some capacity, the two of them taking steps forward is going to be important.

Some thoughts on the game after watching from the standing room area at Xavier.

1. The line up as we finished the first half was the way to go. Vander Plas looks confident and wants the ball. Gavin Block made some head scratching mistakes.

2. Our mistakes weren't because of a talent deficit but due to simple fundamental mistakes in the way we played defense and tried to rebound the ball. They are certainly fixable but why this could happen at this level is beyond me.

3. The last time I was a at a Xavier basketball game was when we played them 10 years. They seem to have added some things i.e. better concessions (which after seeing that leaves a lot to be desired for the Convo experience.) They also had various lounges in the standing room area and more private ones as well where there was a plethora a of games and other interactive choices. I was amazed that standing room was all that was left. We are hardly a feared non-conference opponent and Xavier is in for a rebuilding year which shows the level of support they have, and that leads into my next point.

4. Within a 75 mile radius of that area lies three potent basketball programs each with a core group of supporters (Dayton, UC and Xavier) No other part of the state even comes close to that and Cincy is suppose to be a big baseball town.

5. Perhaps the late night drive was playing tricks with my mind but in a vain attempt to listen to some post game analysis and find a Cincy station who carried the Xavier game, I came across the Miami game. I could have swore Marty Brennaman or some such impersonator was doing the play by play.

From some recent posts, it sounds dubious that Dartis will be back this year. Gollon returns to practice December 17. If both returned, we could conceivably have a decent chance for greatness but even then we would be one injury away from not-so-good. Without Dartis, it would/will take some quantum leaps in improvement on the part of a number of players to get where we would want to see them. We have seen, however, glimpses of potential from the new guys and, in my opinion, at times the defense has been very good which was not the case in the past.

Dartis will not be back this season. Too many reliable sources, both first-hand and second-hand, in Newark have told me this.

i was hoping for a competitive first 20 minutes and we got 34.

preston was a huge surprise in the 2nd half. way to go young man!

TOs were frustrating, but thats somewhat expected by a very young team on the road vs Big East squad in a sold out arena.

I didn't think the Bobcats had even a remote chance of upsetting Xavier, so I am pleased that they hung around for as long as they did. My take is that this team is clearly better than last year's team, but they have their work cut out for them in order to be consistently competitive in the MAC. The pieces seem to be there, so let us see if Saul, the conductor, can weave them successfully together. I personally don't care if the Bobcats don't win a single non-league game as long as they get it together and become a true factor in the MAC itself.

I think Gollon, once 100%, makes this team markedly better on offense. I'm not sure about D. I think young Mr. Preston has proven to be a solid and capable defender, perhaps better than Gollon. That's a good problem to have though, and regardless, having one more guard in the rotation is a good thing to have.

Sad that Jordan won't likely play. I'll hope he gets to 100%, and is able to spend his final year of eligibility breaking Nick Kellogg's school 3-point records.

LOL!!!! So very very true!!!! However, when we win it's the great play of the players, then when we lose these same people want to critique the coaching staff and their decisions.

There was good basketball conversation going on around you and you decided to grind it to a halt by going James Harden, searching for contact while you're up in the air.

If it's all positive and constructive, you've got some sort of filters or have blocked some posters. If you can tell me how to do that, I'd be forever in your debt.
