since the tourney we've had several new posters and for some reason most, not all, but most, have been off their rockers. Is this what it feels like to hit the big time?

Spoke with 2 people real close to  for story in Dispatch on Tuesday, and each said OhioU. has hit a towering homer with hire.

One of the things I like reading is former colleagues takes. Of course they're going to be glowing, but they will usually give you tidbits on styles, nuances and systems in their quotes.

Will be fun to see what Arkley, Znidar, The Post, etc. dig up before the press conference.

One thing I'm seeing is Christian likes to go deep off the bench. He can do that next year if everyone is back.

Also saw Arkley tweeting that Offutt is level-headed about the whole thing despite his ties to Groce. Man, what a find to get that guy in the program. I just get the feeling that if he wants, Offutt can be a D-I head coach some day.

The Situation

I listened to the Power 105 broadcast the Sports Fan interview with Brian Estridge (voice the Horned Frogs). What stood out to me was his answer to Christian's lack of post-season success. He attributed Christian's trouble to seeding. He acknowledged that we may in fact have been spoiled with our recent success as quite frankly match ups for mid-major conferences are difficult. Often victories are hard to come by in general. He also said something similar to the tune of "good coaches in the regular season are good coaches in the post season".

Estridge is a guy who should know about as much as anybody about Jim Christian. His response seemed pretty level headed, as one would expect.

I'd also like to throw out there that this year the Horned Frogs defeated #11 UNLV and #21 UNM (at the time of play, don't know where they finished). New Mexico defeated Long Beach State before losing to National semi-finalist Louisville by 3 in the NCAA tournament.

Does anyone know what his wife's illness is?  I wonder how serious it might be, or if it's just something that flairs up every now and then but is not exactly life threatening.  I hope it's not serious.  Also, he mentions being closer his wife's family.  Does anyone know where she is from.  We all know now that she's an Ohio alumna, but I've no idea where her hometown is. Anybody know?

Not an answer to your question, but here's a story about her giving outgoing TCU players the gift of charcoal drawings for each senior.

It mentions she was a business major at Ohio.

Dambrot is another one of those damn retreads that has bombed in the MAC.

According to Kent's record book, Waters coached there for five seasons and Christian was there for six. So it would appear Waters got the program rolling and Christian was among the people who kept it that way. Heath was there for less than 12 months.

If there's a debate on the merits of the hiring, fine.  But could we at least get our facts straight?

Heath took the Flashes to the Elite 8 in his only year there. Pretty good in my book. Also, because of that success, it was an easier place to sell recruits, regardless of the coach that replaced Heath.

Like I said before, JC won but not in the postseason. Apparently, you're all fine with 20 wins seasons and trips to the CBI, CIT and whatever else pops up in the next couple of years. I thought that's why Hunter was shown the door.

Hey, don't hire Boals or Ford. But, what's the rush? At least kick the tires on a few other veteran candidates (Theus, Gaudio et al other names mentioned on the board). I was expecting a presser next week, not days after Groce left.

As far as my retread comment, I really can't think of a college basketball coach that has left a league and come back to that same league, at a different school, and had the same amount of success. Most guys, like a Pitno/Calipari/Fisher/Floyd, have success in different leagues.

And, someone mentioned Bellechick and Phil Jackson. I raise with Ditka, Shanahan & Gibbs.

Christian has won multiple MAC regular season titles while Groce, O'Shea and Larry Hunter had zero finishes above third since 1994. He have a track record in the MAC. My opinion is the Christian didn't have this much talent at Kent State that we have returning and will do very well. The high school coach should know him from his years at Kent State. Perhaps he has ability to line up some recruits in Texas along with the natural areas Ohio does well. Ohio has far more advantages than what Christian had at Kent State. Gotta feel weird for Kent State fans next year. Their best coach ever will be coaching Ohio.  Get your popcorn out when Ohio visits Kent State next year.  Kinda like Petino coaching Louisville after coaching at Kentucky.  My opinion record season performance is a more consistent measure of a coach.  Tournament depends on great players stepping up in the stoplight. At Ohio Christian will be able to recruit that caliber of player like a DJ Cooper. The attention to detail of taking every game serious and avoiding the bad loses. The rpi performance speaks for itself.  Didn't think this type of canidate was within out reach, but definately  a good hire with an excellent record against MAC East competition. MAC just got more exciting and CMU lands Keno Davis another excellent hire. Good to see the MAC pony up the cash and raise its game. Great to see Ohio raise the standard in the MAC.

I think I've changed my mind about this hire. At first I was just a little shocked and confused...now I feel better. Nothing to add really, just thought I'd say that :)

Being faithfull, we really don't have a choice. We have to roll with it.

To oubobcatjohn,
MAC crowns are "nice" but In my mind, it's what you do in the NCAA's that matter, not the CBI, NIT or any other tourney. We have won 3 games in the NCAAs in Groce's term, that's 3 more games than than any other recent OU coach has won and that's 3 more than Christian won with Kent and multiple bids.

As much as I like what I see with what Christian did with Kent and the regular season, until he shows me he can win in the NCAA tourney, I won't be a convert. Hopefully he will show us all he CAN win in the NCAA's.

1.  Unless the choice was some big name person with lots of post season success every option discussed would have been a "wait and see" situation regarding post season leadership.

2.  I am more than just rolling with the decision.  I am embracing it.  I will adjust my opinion based on outcomes.

3.  Dispatch articles today are pretty good.  I liked Geno Ford's comments.

The question I want asked to Christian at the press conference: "Do you think it is realistic that next year this team can make the Final Four?"

And I hope is answer is that is our goal!

As a fan, I don't expect (or even think it is likely) that Ohio will make the Final Four next year, but we just lost a coach that was swinging for the fences and I want a coach that will continue swinging. More importantly, the players have bought into that swinging mentality, as a fan, I DON"T WANT THEM TO LOSE THAT MENTALITY.

Jim Christian’s hire at Ohio University could be the most earthshaking move in the history of Mid-American Conference men’s basketball.

It will be even better now if it’s true that Ohio will pay Christian $600,000 annually and give his team the use of an airplane to charter to at least five road games per season. According to several MAC sources, both rumors are true. And despite the university’s reported budget deficit of close to $9 million, the Bobcats are also about to renovate the team’s locker room at the Convocation Center.

I did not follow the coaching search as closely 4 years ago as I was in the middle of my first year of law school, but it seems like the fact that ESPN has our coaching hire on the front page of their NCAA Basketball page means that people are taking notice of our program
