Get back to me in 3 years. I'll be laughing and your face will be buried in your hands.

Just like retreads don't work well in the NFL/NBA, retreads like JC won't work well in the MAC. But, hey, we'll always have 2012 to remember.

NBA: Phil Jackson
NFL: Bill Belichick

Quite possibly the two best modern era coaches in both sports were "re-tread" hires.....One of which (Belichick) failed rather spectacularly in his first gig.

But we are talking about the MAC conference, which I realize is the Fort Knox of retreading...or should I say the "un-treadable"?

Some calipari guy has done some work since getting booted from nba.

Poor Pitino couldn't make it in the NBA either...what a retread...

I'm now thinking that this hire will not only cause the death of Ohio basketball, but also of the university itself. Perhaps also the game of basketball in its entirety and the American system of higher education.

Then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Greg, what is the worst university in this conference?
Greg Marmalard: Well that would be hard to say, sir. They're each outstanding in their own way.
Dean Vernon Wormer: Cut the horseshit, son. I've got their disciplinary files right here. Who tackled Brutus Buckeye? Who burnt the couches and threw the bottles at Palmerfest? Every Halloween, the street is filled with thousands of partiers. Every spring, they have fest after fest -- High Fest, Mill Fest, Four Fest and Palmerfest! They were named the Number One Party School in the Nation!
Greg Marmalard: You're talking about OU, sir.
Dean Vernon Wormer: Of course I'm talking about OU, you TWERP!

Haven't posted yet, but here are my two cents.

- Christian might not have won anything in the postseason, but who for Ohio did before Groce? We have to go back to '83 to get that, 28 years.
- He and Groce both made the tournament at a 50 percent rate, but Christian also has tow NIT appearances, which IMO are better than the CBIs and CITs that Groce and TOS got us into.
- GROCE ISN'T WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR! He was exceptional, buy he isn't coming back, which leads to my last point...
- Support our team. If you don't like the hire before the hire, you're extremely shortsighted and narrowminded. Did any of you have OU as a backup school or second choice before you visited? Probably. So wait until we see what Christian has to offer before making some snap judgement. I'll take a tough OOC and 20-plus wins every year with a Top 2 finish in the MAC regular season. Do that enough and the at-large bids will start rolling in.

Maybe we aren't a Butler or Gonzaga now, but five years from now, we could be. We really could. And everyone on this board should be pumped about how well this team played this year, that they are coming back, and that we have an able recruiter on our hands if Jim Christian is hired.

And no matter who is the coach, I'll still scream my head off for my team.

Schaus must have a real strong feeling on this pick.  If he picked Boals or Ford the faithful rejoice.  And if they fail, Schaus is able to say, "but you were there with me on the pick."  Very little fallout.  But he goes and gets Christian with limited interviews (Boals - kinda, Ford?) and no (??) discussion with players.  If it works (league regular season titles, tourney titles, NCAA wins, etc.), we have a coach that appears will be here awhile ala Frank.  If Christian does not deliver, it is on Schaus.  Always interesting in the Convo.

Dambrot is another one of those damn retreads that has bombed in the MAC.

According to Kent's record book, Waters coached there for five seasons and Christian was there for six. So it would appear Waters got the program rolling and Christian was among the people who kept it that way. Heath was there for less than 12 months.

If there's a debate on the merits of the hiring, fine.  But could we at least get our facts straight?

I love all of the people talkin' mess about this hire. Like they interviewed coaches themselves and werent impressed. Or like they are the AD and the prez just went over their head. Mess talk=ignorance. Shaus knows more than you and has put more effort into this search than you. I know this for a fact.

The common denominator in all those successful coaches at Kent State was Laing Kennedy.  They all had the benefit of a supportive AD.

Christian has that at Ohio also.

As for how those Kent teams faded in the post season...that does not mean that Christian has some tendency that he is locked into to fail in the post season.  Even if he has some coaching tendencies that lead to late season wilts, he has enough experience to make some corrections in his approach.  The percentages are in his favor to have some success in the post season if and when he gets there with Ohio.

I suspect that Christian will be able to draw on his experiences in order to adapt to this new situation at Ohio.

This will teach me to take a vacation.  I'm not going to read 16 pages of this thread, so apologies if this has been stated previously: Does this not sound EXACTLY like when Gross was hired.

Coach leaves>players and Attackers want a former Bobcat to get the job (in that case John Rhodes)>Schaus makes a hire that completely dumbfounds everyone.

And then Jim is proven right, and we are all happy with the results.

Let's hope history repeats.

I will say one thing for this troll, if he's one of our infamous trolls of the past from other schools, his new screename indicates that he's learned one very important thing by hanging out on this board.

TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a release that a national search for a new coach will begin immediately.

“We appreciate Jim’s contributions to TCU and wish him the best,” Del Conte said. “A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately. With our entrance into the Big 12, the momentum on the TCU campus and the great city of Fort Worth, we are very excited about the future of our men's basketball program.”

Not a troll at all. But, not a lemming like the rest of you.

You all think JC is the second coming ... fine. I don't. We'll see in a couple of years.

Heath took the Flashes to the Elite 8 in his only year there. Pretty good in my book. Also, because of that success, it was an easier place to sell recruits, regardless of the coach that replaced Heath.

Like I said before, JC won but not in the postseason. Apparently, you're all fine with 20 wins seasons and trips to the CBI, CIT and whatever else pops up in the next couple of years. I thought that's why Hunter was shown the door.

Hey, don't hire Boals or Ford. But, what's the rush? At least kick the tires on a few other veteran candidates (Theus, Gaudio et al other names mentioned on the board). I was expecting a presser next week, not days after Groce left.

As far as my retread comment, I really can't think of a college basketball coach that has left a league and come back to that same league, at a different school, and had the same amount of success. Most guys, like a Pitno/Calipari/Fisher/Floyd, have success in different leagues.

And, someone mentioned Bellechick and Phil Jackson. I raise with Ditka, Shanahan & Gibbs.

Except on the first page many of us expressed real doubts about the hiring.

There's a difference between saying you don't like the hire or you're unsure about the hire compared to planning a funeral service for the basketball program, hoping Boals goes Grunk on Ohio and the players flee Athens.

Why respond to this guy?  I should know better.  Oh well, for educational purposes, you may want to look up Charlie Coles previous MAC HC position before leading Miami to the Sweet 16.  Maybe read up on the current regular season MAC Champions coach and see if he was ever a Head Coach with another MAC program before leading the Zips to their fifth straight MAC tournament title game.

JC made the NCAA's or NIT in 5 of his 6 years at Kent. Not sure why you are throwing the CIT and CBI out there.
