The Optimist response to the death of our program nearly buckled me while sitting in yet another corporate Monday meeting. Solid!

I've followed the mbb program closely since I entered OU (yes, Administration, that's the name of the school ... nothing wrong with Ohio U.) in '91 and, I'm sorry, the program officially died on 4/1/11.

Christian, who was too good for Kent State, is now coming to Athens. He QUIT his latest job because he was about to be fired. Or, he was SCARED of competing with the big boys of the Big 12 and decided to exit stage left.

The idea of taking a someone like that, a guy who is sloppy seconds from Kent, is beyond pathetic.

I'm hoping Cooper & Co. either go pro (i.e. Europe) or transfer out IMMEDIATELY. There is no reason, none, to play for a joker like this. A few of the guys may be close to graduating but, if it was me, I'd take the academic hit and play D2 ball at Ashland at this point.

And, I can't wait to see Ford & Boals get head coaching gigs (maybe even in Oxford) and prove the current administration wrong.

Ohio Men's Basketball ... RIP

4/1/11? What happened a year ago?

For a first post you apparently have no knowledge of the MAC. Christian has won 73% of MAC games. Name a coach at Ohio who ever did that.  Ohhhh, you can't. Other than Russ Finsterwald at 34-6 from 1920-22 with an 85% win rate the next best is Danny Nee at 61.4%.

Schaus wants to go to the next level as in Butler, Gonzaga, etc. and why he plans to pay almost $600K. No disrespect to Boals or Ford but they're not at that stage experience wise to pull that off in all likelihood. They have no wins as Division I level coaches. And neither would have warranted $600K per year.

Love all the emotional tirades the past 24 hours.

And if players want to transfer so be it. No player is bigger than the team.

Ahh...give them at least some Pink Slime so they hang around...it's legitimizing our program...we have (supposedly) Ohio fans setting up accounts just to vomit words on to our computer screens...Not Temple fans, Miami fans, Akron fans, but Ohio fans!   For any self-respecting top-50 program, trolls are a must have....check out the other MAC teams' forums, they have nothing...their top threads are discussing Ohio just to have anything to talk about...they envy our position and the trolls that it brings with it..as of April 1, 2011 (sic) we (39 Registered users and 172 guests) have arrived!

Then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America.

Might as well shut the campus down. They did so in 1970. So for McDavis this will be deja vu all over again since he was on campus back then  ....

Get back to me in 3 years. I'll be laughing and your face will be buried in your hands.

Just like retreads don't work well in the NFL/NBA, retreads like JC won't work well in the MAC. But, hey, we'll always have 2012 to remember.

Did we sit back when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?  NOOOO

TOGA TOGA TOGA TOGA.

Really is this what this thread has turned into?

All of this is happening 1) before an actual announcement has been made  2)before the players meet this new coach  3) before this coach talks to the media

Until they slap the HC nametag on the guys chest that currently says Hi My Name Is ______ your new Head Coach....lets just wait and see what happens.

We don't know what talks the AD had with other prospects, hopefully they covered all the basis, and in the end thats all we can have is faith in the administration to make the right choices for the alumni and students so we can support our basketball team.    Its sports guys, not life and death, and other then putting on the green and white and supporting the cats no matter where we live it is still just a sport.

Now we know why  DJ is in Houston! He's at NASA trying to get on the spaceship outta here. Basketball will survive in space. Few will be chosen.

I can hear Russ now "DJ open from here to Jupiter"  (considered an ill-conceived Uranus, but thought the better of it)

Tom Coughlin, coach of the defending Super Bowl champs, disagrees about re-treads.
Tony LaRussa, who managed the defending World Series champs, also disagrees.

Let's see .. JC took over a Kent program that was already built.

Gary Waters/Stan Heath should get credit for what Kent has become in mbb. JC won with Waters/Heath players. When he got his own, yes, they won but not when it mattered (0-5 in the postseason). Kinda of like the OU days under Hunter ... 20 wins and nothing in March to show for it.

I remember how OU was trying to get to the next level when Timmy O' Tool was hired. How did that work out?!

And, I'm sorry, I don't see any MAC school becoming Butler, Xavier, Gonzaga, VCU, Creighton. Those schools don't have football (of the scholarship variety) and most are private. They can focus all their resources and energies towards mbb.

Every MAC school that has done well in the NCAA's (Ball, Eastern, MU, Kent) lost their coach soon after. That's the way it works. The MAC is a starting point, not a destination.

NBA: Phil Jackson
NFL: Bill Belichick

Quite possibly the two best modern era coaches in both sports were "re-tread" hires.....One of which (Belichick) failed rather spectacularly in his first gig.

But we are talking about the MAC conference, which I realize is the Fort Knox of retreading...or should I say the "un-treadable"?

J.C.'s best year at Kent was his sixth and final 28-7.  Those Waters/Heath recruits must have received some amazing redshirt exemptions.

Christian won with Waters/Heath players? What did those guys get? 8 or 10 years to play?

1996–97 9–18 (7–11) 0–1; Lost in quarterfinal -- Gary Waters
1997–98 13–17 (9–9) 1–1; Lost in semifinal -- Gary Waters
1998–99 23–7 (13–5) 3–0; Won tournament 0–1 in NCAA Tournament Gary Waters
1999–2000 23–8 (13–5) 0–1; Lost in quarterfinal 2–1 in NIT Gary Waters
2000–01 24–10 (13–5) 3–0; Won tournament 1–1 in NCAA Tournament Gary Waters
2001–02 30–6 (17–1) 3–0; Won tournament 3–1 in NCAA Tournament Stan Heath

Hello! Christian was there 6 years. Any players recruited by his predecessors were gone in a few years. And in years 4-6 he won 25, 21 and 28 games. So your argument has more holes than swiss cheese.

Using you logic, or lack thereof, we can say that Geno won with Christian's players then.

2008-09 19–15 (10–6) 1–1; Lost in quarterfinals 0–1 in CollegeInsider.com Tournament Geno Ford
2009–10 24–10 (13–3) 0–1; Lost in quarterfinals 1–1 in NIT Geno Ford
2010–11 25–12 (12–4) 2–1; Lost in final 2–1 in NIT Geno Ford

And you don't see a MAC school becoming a Butler, etc.? Well, I guess you better talk to Schaus. That's his vision.

I've never seen such polarization on attack.  Sure some didn't care for the JG hire....but most had a wait and see attitude.  This one goes from we'll be in the final four next year to the Mayan prophecy to Schaus should be burnt in Effigy....that's Effigy Ohio a little hamlet outside of Zaleski.

The more this goes on the more I can accept the hire.  If you would have mentioned JC's name last week I would have said who the heck is that....if you would have said the TCU coach it would have been TCU has a b-ball team? If you would have shown me a picture of the guy I would have said who the heck is that...but if you would have said the Kent coach for 4 or 5 years I would have said OMG.  I hated that guy because he beat us to a friggin pulp....and Kron too....the guy was more than impressive at Kent.

I'll be happy if he can do most of these things:

* maintains the defensive intensity started by JG

* keeps guys from leaving the team

* recruits as good as JG

* stays for a few years

* helps improve the schedule

* improves the pretzels at the Convo

* retains Dustin Ford or someone that the players can relate to

* does what his wife sez and doesn't embarass her alma mater

* gets us back to the big dance

* brings in some Big Manz for Monroe

MBC's letter

Dear Mr. Schaus,

I am an OU alum (not really, but I play one on the Internet). I have the following demands.
One. Stop trying to call us Ohio. We're OU.
Two, please stop trying to make us a national program. We're in the MAC, and we can't do it because we have football. We never want to hire a head coach with experience.
Three, please tell all the players to transfer.
That is all.
