I agree. But in an odd way, when comparing Groce and Boals it almost helps Boals that he doesn't have a track record.

I am sure that Jeff is a nice guy, but there is no real comparison between the two.  How many days has Boals led a D-I program?  How many games has he been in that number one chair?  Until he is the guy, you can't even hope to have an accurate comparison.  For the record, I think that next year will be the year where we see what Groce is made of.  I just hope that it is still at Ohio.

But that's the point. Fair or not Groce has a record to use against him while Boals does not. That's what Ted is referring to when he says "odd".    I'm not saying I agree with that thought process because obviously there are plenty of things that Groce has done on the positive side of the ledger. But Jeff Boals is seen as rising star and I'm sure there are those that think he is the next Shaka Smart.

There are reports that the UD AD has flown to California to talk with St. Mary's Randy Bennett. Bennett apparently already passed on Utah so we'll see.

I don't think I would go from St Mary's to Dayton for any kind of money.

UD is a great gig: nice arena, GREAT fan support, good conference, path to the post season.  I can't see them going after an unproven coach like Groce but you never know.

Maybe JG would give them a better chance to beat Xavier in Cincinnati, he's got that X factor.

Just not the X's and O's factor, unfortunately.  At least not at crunch time.

Flomo, you are now on posting probation.  Once again you violate board rules by posting mere facts to counteract unsubstantiated rumors.  Shape up, man!

While I would bet JG could hold his own in a head-to-head interview with anyone on this list, his resume from just reading this article is not nearly as impressive as some on this list.  56-48 in a not so strong MAC is simply not too impressive to think you could step into a program that's averaging 24 wins per season vs. stonger competition.

Interesting Dambrot is listed there. He has a son who is a junior at SVSM. I don't think he would leave Akron quite yet.

Not sure why Micah Shrewsberry from Butler is not in the article. Strong vibrations from the Butler folks say that he is a strong candidate'

EDIT WOW! did I just reread that article and see that statement in JG's references

Ohio University coach John Groce, 39: The former top assistant at Ohio State is 56-48 in three seasons and reached the second round of the NCAA tourney in 2010. The Danville, Ind., native produced another postseason trip this season in the CollegeInsider Tournament

Groce mentioned as a candidate whose name is "popping up frequently" along with Bruiser Flint, Chris Collins and Keith Damnbrat.

Supposedly Matta is lobbying hard for Boals to get the job at Dayton...per Lori Schmidt of 97.1 the Fraud in Columbus.

That newspapers that are well versed in excellence at covering college basketball for the past 6 decades recognized that the CIT is indeed a "postseason trip".  Thye did not spin it and facietiously or sarcastically say..."even if it was the CIT " or something equally as damming. Reporting to a fanbase that is voracious for info and somewhat astute about college basketball that the CIT is a legit postseason tourney says a lot to me.

Thinks are getting kind of crazy. Some outlets reporting that Wojo is the next coach while others says Butler assistant Graves is the guy. Meanwhile, a Columbus Dispatch article says OSU may have offered Dayton one or two home-and-homes if they hired Boals.

What the? Why didn't Groce net us any home-and-homes from OSU? I want that deal.

A home and home between UD and OSU is a better deal for OSU.  They are the one's with difficulty selling out their house, not UD.

I seriously doubt this.  I recall that JG said when he came here that he would specifically NOT schedule OSU -- home or away or otherwise -- because it would destroy the relationship he has with Matta.  He said, at the time, that they talked on the phone frequently and he wanted to keep him as a mentor and not as an opponent.  Last year if we would have beaten Tennessee we would have faced OSU.  That was the only way such a matchup would ever happen in the Groce Era.  Maybe Boals doesn't have that kind of relationship with Matta.  I don't know, but color me skeptical about this one.
