Disappointed the news isn't bigger. Figured it would be a TV announcement, but really would have been great if it was ESPN/2.

And now the Athletic Department has an updated wishlist from us.

1.Hanging scoreboard
2.Local TV contract
3.Big time recruits

The irony is if this was a few months ago, "Gary Trent" day would have been up there.  So, we're getting there.

The great thing about chanting for Bridgewater was most of us really didn't care if he got in. I just liked to see Tim O'Shea get visibly angry about it.

Idiot.

That might be believable if there wasn't an arena in West Lafayette, Indiana built by the same architect at nearly the same time that is virtually identical to the Convo and boasts a hanging scoreboard. Check out the picture.

I daresay if the funds were there and it was considered a priority, we would have one.

If we could get back to pre crash info we could resurrect my "it takes a purdue engineer" thread complete with up close and personal pics I took at the 08 Womens Regional. in Mackey before they did the renovations.

Best part about the set up at Mackey is the scoreboard in the middle with video boards up along the sides to track individual player stats. But then ....there is a lot of room there to hang stuff because they dont have much else hanging up there.

I thought BobcatBlitz was going to say all the PGs left the team and the Athletic Department was going to confirm it.

Let me remind everyone how this thread started, an official tweet saying:

"Big MBB announcement coming at 11 a.m.tomorrow!!! Stay tuned..."

Doesn't that imply something bigger than a few games on ESPN-U?  I might have called it "interesting news" or something like that --  but a "Big MBB announcement"?   Maybe I'm just old school and don't understand the 24 hour all-hype-all-the-time news cycle.

And its @Akron? Not even a chance to show off our home crowd.

I'll be disappointed if we don't get the Miami game on TV.

I thought maybe that's why they haven't started selling tickets yet, because the tip-off time was up in the air.

How about someone buying us a hanging scoreboard. That would be awesome!

I was just thinking that (and was at the WSU game while admiring theirs), but thought I read on here by some supposed expert that it would be impossible due to structure limitations of the Convo.

From what I've been told, it's an issue with the roof. When they built the Convo the roof barely held as it was. No way the roof could support the weight that a hanging scoreboard would add to it.

Is this the BIG announcement?   If so, it was kind of over-hyped just a tad!

Which unfortunately I feel could become a pretty popular hashtag with our beloved university.

We have an engineering school EH?

How about some enterprising group of students Play MYTHBUSTERS and calculate the weight of modern speakers and  LCD/LED vidboards and put this to rest. ?  I agree back inthe day it may have been impossible but I just moved a 42" old school Toshiba to replace it with a 52" flat screen.....no comparison in weight. With EVAN making the vids he does better than anyone around why would we not want those on Giant Vid boards hanging from center court.?

This should be the athletic departments only mission for the next two weeks.  If they're not blowing up phones in Bristol, they should be ashamed.

If we could get the record to 15-1, that could hopefully help our case.

The roof might ha've been an issue years ago, but there is no way the roof can't hold a big LED TV.  My roommates and I could hold it up ourselves.

Why would anyone but us care about the Miami game? They don't care about Gary Trent being honored. Miami is not even that good this year. Regarding the scoreboard and Purdue, maybe it has something to do with MONEY. I like the fact that we don't have it. Maybe people have to actually watch the game and not the scoreboard.

The roof used to hold two large white steal speaker boxes.  One looked like the Apollo Space Capsule and the other was a large box that housed speakers and a chair for a camera man.  There was often someone in there on big games taking pictures.  Both structures had ladders connected to the sky-walk.  I could understand support issues with the old style hanging boards.  However, just one of those old white structures would weigh more than the new light weight video boards.   The building is approaching 50 years so maybe the roof is not what it once was.

Yes, the weight issue is no longer a factor with a hanging scoreboard.  That red herring keeps coming up every time this is discussed.  It may have been an issue 30 years ago when the Convo was build because of the huge weights then involved, but it's not now.  The Convo was actually very well-designed and well-built; unlike the library which was under construction at the same time.  They cut some corners on the library but not on the Convo.  One, two, three . . . trigger discussion on the over-emphasis of athletics and need to drop to Div III.

You're right about Trent, but ESPN wants to convey excitement in its broadcasts. A sold-out 13,000 seat arena watching a team that may well have a bit of national buzz by then makes for a ton of atmosphere.

As to the scoreboard, everyone on here understands the money side. I think very few would agree with liking it the way it is. Most people enjoy replays, highlights, and, most importantly, unobstructed views of minor details like the score of the game.

If I'd actually spent time looking, this would've been obvious.  That timeslot was a 21-day pick, and if you take a look at your calendars...

FWIW, MAC does not have any wildcard selections on Jan. 21 with STO or ESPN, and ESPN's windows appear pretty full.  Only slot I can't account for right now is ESPNU from 5-7.  Given that we've announced a tip-off time, I'll say it is fairly certain that game will be an ohiobobcats.com exclusive.

Note, the other two "TBA" tip times on our schedule (1/28, 2/25) also coincide with wildcard dates.

I know that there are some 340 teams in NCAA but we're pretty good and rolling...and all we get is backwater ESPNU?

Espec after the footballers carried main channel ESPN for six games, providing plenty of your mighty fine ball?!
