Shooting stats as shown on the "Some numbers" thread are almost unbelieveable given OUr 13-3 record. I expect todays game to get pretty physical, and Zips look to have the size advantage inside, so FT shooting likely will be critical. Here's one take on how they may go at us (from Zips Nation):

"- Free throw shooting. Neither team is good at it. The Zips may be better off fouling Ivo Baltic and letting him brick half his attempts."

I am going to make the same prediction today as I did before the Buffalo game.
Play great D and we win.
Now it's hard for me to think we continue to shoot as poorly as we have in these last few games, as well as to allow the opponent to shoot as well as they have.
I certainly hope all this pregame talking around this rivalry doesn't side track us from the mission, a W.

Not much chance this pitt/marquette foul fest ends in time.

Nice to see so much green and white in the building 20 minutes before the tip.

Good God, DJ. Him hitting that early 3 was about the worst thing that could have happened. Now he's green light to jack it up from anywhere.

I second that.  The over the back "foul" on john smith for his 4th foul was absurd.  Hate to see when the officials decide the outcome with their whistle.  We are playing with great effort though. Gotta finish this out!!

What the fuuuuuuuuuuudge???!!!   That literally may have been the worst call I've seen at any level of sports. Flagrant foul on offut? You've got to be kidding me.  MAC officials are such a freakin joke.

Stolen by the refs.  Video of the final 5 minutes needs to be sent to those in charge of officiating.

However, we had many missed free throws that made this game close to begin with.

Ref's were bad, but come on. Make shots (DJ), have a clue coaching, and rebound the ball. Ref's were terrible, but game should have been won today.

Gotta agree with the sentiment of many...terrible officiated game but given that the game was definitely still OUrs to win.  The finger points to the Bobcats for those things not in the control of the officials.

There was a shot of him on the bench with a VERY effeminate reaction to a foul being called on him.  (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Wow.  Lots in this thread to digest.  I'll try to remain as emotionless as possible, as many here either overreact after a game or are always pass-out drunk on the green and white kool-aid no matter the time.

-  DJ is fine.  He was great from the line, and I would hope he uses his athleticism down the stretch to get there more often.  At the same time, when it comes to shooting, less is more with DJ.

-  I've been saying for a month or so now that a team with big's would give us problems.  This was a glaring issue going into this game, and frankly, I thought our game plan against Zeke was great.  Now, he single handidly fouled out our best 3 inside players, but all-in-all, I thought we did pretty well against him.  I think Groce's plan was to bang him hard and send him to the line.

-  A few people harping on Kellog for not shooting the 3 as much as they'd have liked.  Credit Akron.  They had him covered most of the game.  3/8 from him is fine.

-  I thought Baltic actually did ok in this game.  He certainly exceeded my expectations as I thought Zeke would handle him underneath (which, he actually did).  Kudos to Ivo for bringing Zeke away from the hoop and taking away his defensive advantage.  Now, he shot two 3s.  He doesn't need to bring him that far away from the hoop.  IMO, he shouldn't take another 3 ever.

-  Not that it cost us the game, but the flagrant call was worse than Jenning's 'non-fumble' in yesterday's NFL matchup.  The refs were atrocious, but for anyone who follows the MAC, this is the norm.  JSF is 100% right in the Akron thread.  This game was a huge middle finger to basketball fans everywhere.  If you watched the IU/OSU game yesterday, you saw officiating that we could only hope for in the MAC.  They let the teams play.  I'm not sure why MAC refs insist on making sure basketball in this conference is not physical.

-  I'm not 100% sold that I want the #1 or #2 seed.  The #3 or #4 may be better for us.  Ask Green Bay how much the bye helped them.  We're deep enough this year that I dont' think the rest factor means nearly as much as it has in the past.  I would rather play another game to get back in sync.  I'm not sure the long layoff would be as productive as we think it would be.  All that said, clearly, the goal is still to play to win.  If we get the #1 or #2, so be it.

-  Does anyone think they have the MAC figured out?  I know I don't.  Akron has a leg up right now, but both of their road wins have been to the two teams I think finish at the bottom of the East.  I think the East comes down to who handles the West best.  I like how this sets up for us.  I still see no clear-cut favorite though.  Gonna be fun.

Go Cats.

IMO allowing the 7' tall guy to catch it on the block is not the strategy to employ when your tallest guy guarding him is at least 4 inches shorter and probably a 6-8" disadvantage in wing span.  Time and again we were content playing behind him and not challenging the pass.  I wasn't paying as close attention to the ball pressure being applied at the time of the entry pass, but perhaps tighter D there would have helped.  I couldn't believe we didn't adjust our strategy as the fouls continued to mount.  I'm not sure what his FT% is on the year but he certainly looked comfortable at the line.  I prefer to see us play him 3/4, then recover on the pass if you're unable to get a hand on it.  The Big/Little double worked on a couple occasions as well, but not something I'd do on every touch.

If you can't play behind, hold your ground, challenge the shot, and not foul you have to do something else.  Obviously coach Groce didn't inform our guys to foul him purposely, but his strategy put them in the position where they didn't have much choice.

I hope we have something different up our sleeve for him in the Convo.

70.5%. I highly doubt our strategy was to put him at the line.
