Wow. Lots in this thread to digest. I'll try to remain as emotionless as possible, as many here either overreact after a game or are always pass-out drunk on the green and white kool-aid no matter the time.
- DJ is fine. He was great from the line, and I would hope he uses his athleticism down the stretch to get there more often. At the same time, when it comes to shooting, less is more with DJ.
- I've been saying for a month or so now that a team with big's would give us problems. This was a glaring issue going into this game, and frankly, I thought our game plan against Zeke was great. Now, he single handidly fouled out our best 3 inside players, but all-in-all, I thought we did pretty well against him. I think Groce's plan was to bang him hard and send him to the line.
- A few people harping on Kellog for not shooting the 3 as much as they'd have liked. Credit Akron. They had him covered most of the game. 3/8 from him is fine.
- I thought Baltic actually did ok in this game. He certainly exceeded my expectations as I thought Zeke would handle him underneath (which, he actually did). Kudos to Ivo for bringing Zeke away from the hoop and taking away his defensive advantage. Now, he shot two 3s. He doesn't need to bring him that far away from the hoop. IMO, he shouldn't take another 3 ever.
- Not that it cost us the game, but the flagrant call was worse than Jenning's 'non-fumble' in yesterday's NFL matchup. The refs were atrocious, but for anyone who follows the MAC, this is the norm. JSF is 100% right in the Akron thread. This game was a huge middle finger to basketball fans everywhere. If you watched the IU/OSU game yesterday, you saw officiating that we could only hope for in the MAC. They let the teams play. I'm not sure why MAC refs insist on making sure basketball in this conference is not physical.
- I'm not 100% sold that I want the #1 or #2 seed. The #3 or #4 may be better for us. Ask Green Bay how much the bye helped them. We're deep enough this year that I dont' think the rest factor means nearly as much as it has in the past. I would rather play another game to get back in sync. I'm not sure the long layoff would be as productive as we think it would be. All that said, clearly, the goal is still to play to win. If we get the #1 or #2, so be it.
- Does anyone think they have the MAC figured out? I know I don't. Akron has a leg up right now, but both of their road wins have been to the two teams I think finish at the bottom of the East. I think the East comes down to who handles the West best. I like how this sets up for us. I still see no clear-cut favorite though. Gonna be fun.
Go Cats.
