Thank goodness there are no seniors on this team.  This would be a very embarrassing way to send them out on senior night.

I'll probably have extra tickets that night.  Can't imagine my wife and daughter will want to miss the first two hours of the Oscars and an 8:00 start is way too late for my grand daughter.  I mention this because they come to almost all of the games.

This is a very stupid time to have a game.  Period.

Read Solich's comments about being on TV. Now tell me this sucks.

And football played at crappy times in front of empty stands, too. The exposure worked, they got better players, won more games, and got better times with better crowds. You're telling me this can't be the same case for a program that's in stronger position now than football was then?

While being placed at a really crappy time slot for TV,  Loosing 2500 or even 3000 people for a TV game is worth it for me as far as national exposure goes.  An abysmal rating of 200,000 is more than we lost.

Just in case people can't do the math: 200,000>3,000

Tough to have your cake and eat it too...we were all crowing for TV with the Bracketbuster, now we're shunning TV!

Nevertheless, I think we all know that this conference has sold its soul to ESPN. They could tell us to play at 4:30 am on a Thursday and I'm sure the conference would happily oblige. The MAC has clearly made a statement that TV viewership is more important than attendance.

I usually have a work meeting at 7pm on Sundays. I guess I won't be there for that.  I don't have a problem with the start time. We're on TV, so it's better than nothing.

Next year, let's shoot for the stars. Let's see if we can get an ESPN Classic timeslot competing with the Superbowl.

Seriously, this is the second worst television timeslot of the YEAR! and if you take the folks that hate the movies (or just hate the oscars) and are just committed to sports, we're still the 3rd option behind espn and espn2!! I still maintain this is a garbage move. There is no positive to this. No one will be watching.

At least there's no football!

On the plus side, those who go can lord the "I'M A REAL FAN" stick over those who don't.

I agree with your thought.  I sometimes wonder if some of the real BMW'ers on here behave the same way in person, with their family, or at work. Games get moved for TV all the time.

I have no idea what ESPN and ESPN2 are showing that night. It is the night of the NBA All-Star game, which is on TNT. There is not college basketball, men or women's set for that timeslot on ESPN or ESPN2. The ESPN website will not show its TV schedule that far in advance.

A lot of Sunday evenings, ESPN shows lesser-known sports or non-sporting events. I don't know why an actual game wouldn't get on TV ahead of that kind of stuff, if that's what it is in this case.

But either way, I doubt this game will draw any lower ratings than any typical ESPNU game that often goes up against other college basketball games that, on average, people will will wach over a MAC game.

I guess I'm the only one who watches Sunday night hoops.  I like the timeslot, only other tv game is Oregon/Oregon State on Fox Sports Regional.  We'll get the casual sports fan, and we'll do just fine for viewership.

In my mind, it's better than playing Akron on a Saturday with no tv coverage.  We don't take this timeslot, we're not on TV for the entire month of February (after 5 games in January).  It has plenty of flaws, no denying.  It would make for a late night for out-of-town fans, so less of a crowd.  It also means 3 games in 6 days (and tough ones at that, vs Akron, @Kent, @Miami).

However, it's also the day before conference tournaments kick off in Division 1.  Meaning, we're getting real close to the point of the season where we basically are told when and where we play, and what channel we'll be on if we're even on TV.  We'll have no input.  So you might have to choose between Bobcat basketball, 60 minutes, Private Practice, or Blue Bloods.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  If only they made recording devices, people could come to the game and watch an awards show later.

Since we all know that the department monitors this site, I'd love for someone to answer this question - could we have said no, we're not moving our game?

The Oscars will cut attendance and viewing and the NBA game will attract the serious younger hoops fans so I'm really not sure who the powers that be are hoping will see this game.  Kind of makes me a bit mad that I'll probably waste three of my season tickets that night too.

Come on - this game had the potential to be huge. Title fight with two left in conference play? Against Akron, who is generally the 2nd biggest home game of the year? This game on a Saturday had 10k potential written all over it. 8500 minimum. When we draw 4000 for Sunday night, it's going to hit us in the pocketbook.

I understand the need to be on TV, but this one just isn't worth it. Accepting this was a knee-jerk reaction to getting screwed on the Bracketbuster.

Huh?  I don't know the answer to Alan's question, but I'm willing to bet we don't really have the authority to say no.  If we do, I don't think we'd exercise it, either, regardless.

Also, UpSan, we'll be up against "Catching Hell" on ESPN2, and the schedule looks like it is TBA at this point on ESPN.

Does ESPN own the Convo? We could have just said there was a concert there that night. Of course we have the right to decline. It's our game. Might we lose the good graces of the whores in the MAC front office? I suppose. Might we lose favor with the dickwads in Bristol? Perhaps.

Do we have a contract with the Conference? If they want us to play then, I don't know that we have too much say.  We can always go independent!

Norris, is this a case where ESPN gets first pick and STO then gets next two?  STO has a wildcard selection for the 25th at 6pm, which if Ohio/Akron is the ESPNU game means that STO has a choice of

Miami at Buffalo
Kent St at BGSU
Ball at EMU
Western at Toledo

CMU/NIU already on STO at 2pm on Sunday, as mentioned previously.

The Oscars?  Really?  you think that someone that would turn us on Saturday is not going to watch us so they can watch the Oscars?  Thank God I now have something to watch while the wife watches the Oscars.

And while losing some of the over 40 crowd will hurt the pocketbook, as long as the students turn out the atmosphere will be rocking (FYI - the over 40 crowd does not "bring" the atmosphere).

No, man, everyone watches the Oscars. It's the single most important event in the US. Didn't you know that? I'm surprised there are other things on TV at all. Why aren't we canceling the game? DOZENS of people are going to choose the Oscars instead!

Yes -- STO chose Kent/BG.

I can't add much to this thread that hasn't already been said, but I share the same thoughts, DFC. Give me 2PM on a Saturday with no TV over this deal. And on a similar subject, give me Kent's non-televised game with CofC over what we get on Bracketbuster Saturday. We haven't had Akron at home on a Saturday in ages. I doubt the Rowdies are coming down, now.

Sunday games aren't conducive to the culture of Athens at all. Consider this, we beat the team we hate the most and our fans are on an emotional high. Wouldn't you want to hit Court Street and celebrate? Instead of thinking, "shoot, gotta run home. I have class/work in eight hours."

I readily admit to watching way more TV than is good for me ... everything from classic movies to absolute trash like the Real Housewives.

I have never once watched the Oscars.

The Sunday night game actually works out perfect for me. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are typically eaten up by my sons' activities (basketball, swimming, karate) and my activities (coaching bball).   But this will be a big attendance suck.  Not an Oscar watcher (although I will try to see all the nominated movies over time) so I could care less about the conflct.

You ought to try it.  Lots of people have through the years.

Not a fan of this move.  At all.  I expect another empty house.  I'll have trouble making it and I live just a few miles from the Convo.  Uhg.

The MAC doesn't care about attendance.  Just TV exposure.  And, from the looks of it, showcasing empty stadiums on TV didn't hurt our football recruiting and probably helped it.

So, I can imagine a permanent move to Sunday night hoops games for the MAC.  Can't you?

Folks, I'm not soliciting opinions about the Oscars. Like it or not, outside the superbowl, this is the most watched television show of the year.
