The kind of person who would choose watching the Oscars over watching or attending an OHIO game (so, leaving aside having to be at work the following morning in columbus/cincinnati/cleveland/etc.) should have attended a school in the center of a large vortex of suck in oxford ohio...

in other news,

GO CATS!

I couldn't disagree with you guys more. The people that truly care about OU basketball will be there and those are the only fans I care about anyways.

There already is the Green Fever student promotion going on for the game so that'll definitely get some students in the seats and OU has done a great job of marketing national tv games as of late to students here.

Maybe we won't get the crowd we could've gotten for this game but I blame that more on the 25+ age group/non student population more than anybody else. IMO, the students will show up for this game as long as we continue to do well.

And the Oscars, seriously u guys???? What % of people at Ohio games are females or people that give a crap about that stuff? I mean seriously, if someone chooses the Oscars over a big OU/Akron game, I'm not sure you want those types of fans at the Convo anyways.

Why is everyone missing the point here? If you want to discuss whether you like the Oscars more or less than basketball, start another thread. That's not what this is about.

This is about a poor scheduling decision. The television benefit is minimal if non-existent due to the Oscars, and it being Sunday night and the only partial coverage with ESPNU.

The NEGATIVE EFFECTS INSIDE THE CONVO ARE SUBSTANTIAL, due to the time slot and day change. This is a much worse time slot than even Wednesday. Sunday is the deadest night on campus.  Even the biggest partiers and procrastinators are buckling down with their books by Sunday night.

I like to think that I truly care OU basketball. However, I won't be at this game now that it has changed to Sunday night. Just not practical. And the reason has nothing to do with the Oscars.

As long as the students pack their sections, the crowd will be solid for TV purposes.  I assume the students will show up.  I can attest that if we were still there, the Crazy Cat kegs would be delivered Friday night to the "Train" for safe keeping over the weekend.

Yes, it's too bad that the Oscars and the NBA All-Star game are the same day.  (Isn't the NBA game on at a different time/in the afternoon...I doubt that they want to compete with the statuette.)  And the Oscars typically draw massive viewership, though I bet descending over time because they moved the ceremony to Sunday from Monday, where it was functionally a holiday, something people really looked forward to and planned for...instead of, now, just a somewhat stand-out program on the night before the drudge work week begins again.

That said, I earned my bona fides by repeatedly, incesseantly, annoyingly posting that mid-week ESPN games for football would be/were genius even if they made games difficult to attend for people who live more than, say, 30 miles from Athens.

So now, having my M.O. (Master of the ObviOUs), I bring you:  DON'T BE AN IDIOT.  SUNDAY NIGHT NATIONAL TV COMING TO YOU FROM THE CONVO IS ABOUT PERFECT.  Yes, it will be difficult to attend the game unless you live near Athens, given that it's a school night.  Otherwise, the game itself should be terrific--'kron playing really good ball and yOUr OHIO BOBCATS not backing down from anyone.  CONVO GONN' BE CRRRRAZZZZZZZZZZY!!!

Simply, this is how you build a program.

How can anyone think that there is anything bad about this.  Oh.  No.  Sorry, we don't want our game to be on national TV.  If you were in a business and your decision in this situation was 'no,' you would be deserving of being fired.

Watched an OU game on tv lately?  During the course of the play by play coverage, the seats that you see are not the student section but the platinum and gold sections.  Those are the seats that will be thinly populated.

And I agree with DCF, this is not a thread about the Oscars or the NBA All-Star game.

And finally, I'm with Steveland.  I consider myself one who cares about OU basketball and I will be there that Sunday night.  Sometimes the "America, love it or leave" tone of some of you guys gets a bit tiresome.  There are many shades of grey in this world.

Not sure I am hearing the love it or leave it tone - but you can read into it what you want.  My comment has nothing to do with an empty seat in the background as you watch the ball being brought up court, but with the TV cameras catching the students and band as they come in and, more so, out of commercial break.  It's Akron so the students should be pumped - to the size of Miami - no, but it should be for first place so they should be jumping.  That is the "fan base" the cameras will continually bring into the picture.  For what its worth.  The day we start scheduling for the platinum and gold "seaters" is the day I stop donating.  Its about the players (think they would rather play on TV?) and the students.

No one said it was about the platinum and gold seaters.  However, they are the ones that are there year after year with open check books that support the program while the players and students come and go.

but players and students turn into alum.  Get 'em while they are young.  You can go out and find a customer, or you can grow one.  Make it about them while they are there and you have them for life.

Folks, I'm not soliciting opinions about the Oscars. Like it or not, outside the superbowl, this is the most watched television show of the year.

http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/media/content/nielsens-top-10-2011-super-bowl-most-watched-tv-broadcast-american-idol-most-watched-series

Actually last year's was the ninth-most watched show of the year (of course the rest of the top 10 was football, so at least it's not going against that). Its rating was only about one and a half times that of a typical episode of American Idol. A 12.9 share. Only about 1 in 8 people are watching. I really don't think that's an issue. And when you consider there is likely to be no live sporting events on ESPN or ESPN2, I think the TV rating will be decent.

Yeah, the time will mean there won't be a lot of families with kids and people who have to travel a long way. Some students might even skip out. But I am certain Ohio gets a lot more total eyes watching by being on TV this way than not. It's a good thing to be on TV, even if there's a few thousand less fans.

This is kind of an aside...while it is certainly possible that the ESPN football games helped us with recruiting, it may be premature or even impossible to draw that conclusion objectively.  Seems that the evidence for that is rather anecdotal.

We had a couple of recruits being quoted as saying that was a factor in their choosing Ohio.  I'm not sure that's enough evidence to tip the scales in the favor of "ESPN trumps all other scheduling priorities" position.

Also, some are trying to say that the football games should get some of the credit for increased enrollment applications.  That may well be true, but how do we know for sure based on evidence?

That said, I see merit in both sides of this argument on this thread.  I'm still sorting this one out in my mind.  But my wife and I WILL be there on that Sunday night barring something unforeseen.

btw, for anybody wondering, my comment "for anybody who truly cares" was directed at current students of OU and townies that live close by.

I totally understand people that live farther away if they can't make it or that the time change can affect whether people can make it or not. I'm just talking about the normal people that you see on a regular game basis at the convo.

Pull out all of the Superbowls and it's rather interesting to see what America has watched through the years.  Single event tv shows used to be a big deal - Gone with the Wind, Bob Hope Christmas special, Ed Sullivan with the Beatles and the Academy Awards.  Not anymore.  To borrow a speech from Bruce Springsteen at Harry Chapin's medal of honor ceremony in 1987, "I've got my music, you've got yours, the guy down the street has his."  We're not going back to Leave it to Beaver days and I'm not advocating such a tea party position but it is very difficult in this age of 24 hour sound bites to gain a consensus on much of anything.

Jeff said it well, much of this is anecdotal evidence at best.  The beauty of it all is that we can have this conversation virtually on this site.  Used to be we were limited to the regular gang at the local bar.

Scroll down to the United States.

Actually, the students have packed it in pretty well this year.  The O Zone has overflowed up into the chair backed seats above the benches.  The issue has been noise and cooperation more than anything..

Personally - good change for me since I was seriously bumming out that I would miss the game when scheduled for Saturday due to work event.

The 8 PM start on a Sunday, plus Oscars will certainly effect what the attendence could have been. However, if we are in a fight for 1st place - it will still be good - I would expect at least 8K.

Lou could have fun on the P.A.:

After a "make up" call - "And the Oscar for best make up goes to...."

After a bad foul call on cats - "And the Oscar for best acting goes to...."

After the fight song by band - "And the Oscar for best soundtrack goes to...."

After an assist - "And the Oscar for best actor in a supporting role...."

After a Dambrot tirade against the refs - "And the Oscar for best actor in a leading role...."

After an ally oop - "And the Oscar for best visual effects goes to...."

After the win - "And the Oscar for best director goes to....(Coach Groce)"

"And the Oscar for best costume design goes to....(Cats if in Black Uni's, Rufus default)

And of course - "And the Oscar for best "screen play" goes to...."

I don't know. Northern Illinois plays at Bowling Green on STO tonight.

We're predicting pretty big numbers for it here at the MAC office.
