If EMU loses, BG wins, Kent loses, there becomes a three-way tie b/w BG, Kent and Ohio.  Teams are 2-2 against each other.  It goes to division record, Ohio is #3, BG is #4.

They changed it this year. Second tiebreak is now record against highest-ranked opponent, moving down until the tie is broken.

BG cannot get to the top 4, so if we lose Friday, their game doesn't mean anything to us.

So it's:

Ohio win + Buff loss = #2
Ohio win + Buff win = #3
Ohio loss + Kent loss + EMU loss = #3
Ohio loss + Kent win + EMU loss = #4
Ohio loss + EMU win = #5

Right?

Looks right to me.

Good stuff Shabamon.  Based on your analysis, I can't pick a preferable slot until the Akron outcome.  I'll take whatever scenario that put us up against Buffalo in the semi-finals.  Let Kent and Akron beat each other up on Friday night.

I fully expect Akron to lose and Buffalo to win...Which is crazy that Buffalo will be your MAC regular season champs, but that seems likely to me at this point.

I also think Toledo will indeed beat EMU.  As for us beating Miami?  Who knows.

Seeing that you're flat out dominating Pick Em this year, I'm gonna go ahead and trust your judgement.

As Columbo used to say, just one more thing. The fourth seed is between us and EMU? If we win, we get it. If we lose, we need EMU to lose to have the fourth seed?

If by fourth seed you mean the last of the four remaining bye seeds and not the #4 seed, you are correct.

I may be the only person on the planet who has this opinion, but: A "double bye" in a tournament played over a six-day period is ludicrous. I could say more, but I'll stop right here.

How do you feel about the triple bye that the one and two seed get?

What about an Ohio loss + Kent loss + EMU win?

Then it is Kent, EMU, Ohio, right?

Still #5, no matter if Kent wins or loses.

Final score: Akron 61, Kent State 55. Does this guarantee a top 4 seed for us, or are we hoping for an EMU loss?

Still need EMU to lose if we don't get it done tomorrow

Alan, I guess I counted wrong! So let me just re-think this ... If a "double bye" is ludicrous, then what the MAC has concocted is idiotic beyond asinine. It's the worst concept I've ever observed.

For tomorrow:

Ohio win + Buffalo loss = 2 seed

Ohio win + Buffalo win = 3 seed

Ohio loss + EMU loss = 3 seed

Ohio loss + EMU win = 5 seed

When I first told my friend about the new setup, he said, "I thought the Big East Tourney setup was ridiculous. The MAC setup makes the BE's look sane now." I find it hard to disagree with him. I'm all for the motives that the MAC executives used in making the format (so that the winner would be truly the best team from the league and have a shot at winning a game or two in the dance), but since the last two winners were a 9 and a 6 seed, I just wonder what they'll do if a <4 seed ends up winning. Unlikely to happen, but that's why I love Championship Week...

This new setup is kinda goofy at first glance, but it really is a better way of rewarding the best teams over the long haul of the regular season. I can understand why the conference would want that - it makes all the regular season games more meaningful, and it improves the odds of getting the best representative possible in the NCAAs.

Of course, the flip side to that is the only MAC team in recent memory to win an NCAA tournament game was a 9 seed in the MAC tournament.

For what its worth, the MAC is hardly the only conference to use this system, In 2010 (or maybe 2011, my notes are a little spotty on which year it is), the Big West, the Horizon, and the WCC all gave their top 2 teams byes into the semifinals.

I really don't mind too terribly much between 2 or 3 -- both avoid Akron until the championship.

So is there anyway Kent could drop to the 5 seed or do they have the 4 locked up?
