Hey Guys, while it is great that we are #9 in the RPI.  This early in the season, it doesn't hold all that much weight.  OSU has played a tougher schedule than us, no matter what any computer says.  With that being said, it will be important to keep an eye on Oakland, Marshall, Lamar and UNI all year and to root for them in order to give us some "quality wins" and who knows we could be competing with some of those teams for an atlarge????

Keep checking the original post in this thread for updates on the ratings.

Actually, I think we're now far enough into this season where RPI and Sagarin ratings mean something.  This isn't like mid-November or even early December.

Yeah...playing only 2 road games in the OOC will drag OSU's SOS down...they'll catch up when they have to travel for Big Ten play.

Gotta disagree on the RPI not having much weight...the OOC games are where it gets built up...being up there now is important because it's impossible to make it up when we get to the MAC play when we have 6 sub-200 rated teams.

We're a third of the way through the season. It's no longer a small sample size.

Not sure I'd classify St. Mary's loss at Denver as a bad loss. Denver's pretty good and playing in the altitude is never easy.

Edit:  Grammar question for you English majors or journalists.   Where would the possessive apostrophe go in "St. Mary's loss"?   Would there be another after the s?

I am a firm aderent to the school of "when in doubt, write around it." Even if correct, St. Mary's' looks bizarre and would likely confuse a reader. I would say "the Gaels' loss."

For a pedantic and lengthy debate on this exact matter, look here:

Realtime RPI's GAMER prediction now has us favored in every single game for the rest of the season.

Teamrankings.com has us favored in every game as well. They list our toughest games as @Buffalo, @Kent, and @Akron with a 51.2, 56.1, and 58.3 percent chance of winning each of those games, respectively.

Western crushing Oakland in Rochester could not have helped the RPI too much.

Having an impressive RPI is fun, but seeing the team continue to improve and win? There is nothing better! Go Bobcats!

Sagarin SOS now 92, down from 39 in 4 days.  Go figure.  If this keeps up, we'll be in the low 100's after MAC play.

I don't actually know the formula off hand, but given that wel play BOTH teams, I'm not sure how much effect it would have had.

It will more or less even out in the long term. But because we've yet to play WMU, it hurts us in the short term.

It sucks, because the MAC has completely shot itself in the foot this week. The conference has fallen enough that our focus should be on rooting for our opponents to win, even at conference expense. An Oakland win was worth more to us than a WMU win.

The argument for ranking OHIO in the top 20 of the media polls at this point is growing pretty legit. I'm interested in seeing if we can improve on #40 in next weeks poll.

Relatively speaking, there were few games this week, so your Boxing Day polls may not feature as much movement as others.

Looked at those ranked 20+ (AP) to see who lost and may fall.  #25 Illinois dropped a game to #8 Mizzou -- surely will drop them into ORV-land, but probably not behind us, I'd guess.

Stanford dropped a game to unranked, under-.500 Butler.  While I still think Butler is a quality team, they'll likely get penalized for that one.  I'll say we jump them.

Kansas State (31) and Long Beach State (41) face off on Christmas day.  Should K-State lose that one, I think we'll pass them, but LBSU may well leap-frog us.  Calling that a wash.

Texas A&M (32) lost to Rice -- we jump them.  Cleveland State lost to South Florida the day the last poll came out.  Jump them.  We jump UNI.  Obviously.

Cal lost to #21 UNLV, and Northwestern to #23 Creighton.  Neither are terrible, but probably enough to jump at least one.

I think we'll move forward, to around 32-35th, figuring our statement against UNI might help us jump a few of the handful-of-votes teams ahead of us.

-> #32 in USA Today/Coaches. (thanks to Uncle Wes for catching that we're tied for 32, not 33 as I originally stated).

Has Ohio ever played a weaker non-conf schedule than it is playing this season?  Kennesaw State, Marietta, NC A&T, Portland, etc?  How encouraged should we be by our 1-loss start?
