How by calling you Ohio Bobcats?

Is this one of those "envy" things going on or feeling like a "little brother" type of deal?

Sorry I guess I don't get how calling you Ohio U, Bobcats, or Ohio Bobcats is insulting to you?

This will be my last post about this issue ... wow.

Backstory: A few years ago, osu wanted to call themselves "Ohio" on licensed apparel. We held the trademark, and told them, "No, you can't do that, because we're Ohio and that is confusing as hell." They said, "We don't care, we're Ohio too, so we're doing it. Plus, since you all refer to yourselves as Ohio U sometimes, you've given up your trademark." We said, "Nuh uh." They said, "Uh huh." There was a lawsuit, and we won, so by law osu cannot refer to themselves as "Ohio" (except in a few unfortunate circumstances where they have traditionally referred to themselves as "Ohio"...Script Ohio, for example), but we have to actually refer to ourselves (and make the effort to have others refer to us) as "Ohio". This is also why osu now includes the "The" in their name.

So, it's not a "little brother" thing. It's a legal thing, with millions of dollars in licensing at stake.

I agree with those facts except for the "The" part. I think they've been emphasizing the "The" way before that lawsuit, like for more than 50 years...

Really? Hmmm, maybe I just didn't notice it until about the same time as the lawsuit, so I always equated the two.

Thanks and agree with you as well ... didn't mean to start up a feud.

If people are that upset about it than have "Ohio" fight "Ohio State" for doing their own commercials as well when they use the "OH-IO" in their commercials that you can see on the BTN or whenever they have a game on and run a commercial of each school that is playing.

Have them stop the "Script Ohio" as well and tell them that Michigan is actually the "inventor" using it for Ohio State ... lol ... most Ohio State fans don't even know that part of the story. So every-time they do it they are telling Michigan fans "thank you" because we cannot create any of our own stuff.

Have them stop doing the chants at sporting events and make a copyright infringement so every-time their fan-base does it -- it cost the university money or make them throw on "State" if they can spell it after their "OH-IO chant".

We've been fighting tOSU over identity and bigger issues ever since Rutherford B. Hayes officially designated it the state's "flagship" university and undercut funding and progress at Ohio's other two (at the time) state universities for decades. We have fought them on the name but it's a completely one-sided battle against Goliath. Your clown coaches and fans are making our sisyphean task all the more difficult. And the irony is that tOSU fans like being called Ohio.

Name one other university in the nation that has to put a U before or after its name for its own identity. Now that you can't, can you possibly see why this annoys us?

While I can't find the legal settlement anywhere, I can bet that the OH-IO chant was one of those grandfathered. So legally we wouldn't be able to stop it. Probably why Ohio State uses that so it can get around the copyright and rub it in.

And trust me, you are just scratching the surface of the feud between Ohio and Ohio State. Alot of posters here hate everything to do with that school. It just feeds the monster, and imagine when you talked with someone and said you went to 'Michigan' and they just assume you meant Michigan State... that's what happens to alot of Ohio grads, they just assume you meant Ohio State. So calling Ohio State, "Ohio" reinforces that.

Well Oklahoma calls themselves OU.

Well what about Miami? I am willing to bet most call them Miami (OH) still and not Miami University or MU ... lol.

Thanks for the insult and name-calling. Funny how you complain about others doing it, but you do it too? LOL -- that makes a lot of sense.

Well not sure what fans your talking about, but most of the Ohio State fans I know don't like it when the Michigan coaches or players say it even though 5 minutes later you will see them doing the "OH-IO" cheer, but carry on as you are and taking potshots at our coaches now. Shouldn't you be in grade school today or you got parent-teacher conference day so you have the day off because that sounds like a 12 year old girl or somebody that doesn't like the "little brother" tag?

If that's what he says he's dumber than a tree stump.  He's right up there with Steve Mix.

Well I would rather have him as our coach than your coach Frank Solich .

He just took Michigan to the Sugar Bowl and won it along with going 11-2 and brought Michigan back after suffering three bad seasons (for Michigan) under RR.

Yes, "clown" is really harsh message board chatter. And some dude on a message board is equivalent to paid coaches using a trademaked name of a university incorrectly as an insult.

You seem like a good poster overall, and you're bringing some nice info to the board here. No need to wallow into tiresome tirades about maturity. Someone might confuse you for an Ohio State fan.

For your edification, here's a little background on this issue:

Out of Court Settlement

Key Quote: "The agreement gives Ohio University exclusive rights to "OHIO" for athletic uniforms, apparel and merchandise, but allows Ohio State to use the word in certain traditional instances, such as "Script Ohio," Ohio Stadium and for commemorative merchandise."

Earlier article on law suit

O$U has been very good about adhering to the letter of the agreement, if not its spirit.  They've retired the cheerleader uniforms that just said "Ohio" and in all of their news releases about athletic contests between the two schools have always referred to us as "OHIO" since the agreement.  The two times we've played them in football since the agreement the scoreboard had us as "OHIO" and them as "Ohio State."  The funny thing about this is that they sued us, and then when their attorneys told them they were going to lose in court they asked for the out-of-court settlement, which we -- in retrospect -- shouldn't have agreed to, because we grandfathered in too many things.

If you guys really wanted to insult them, call them "Ohio A&M," which was Cowtown U's original name, for about the first eight years of their existence.  They really hate that.  But, Dumber than a Tree Stump Hoke hasn't studied his history enough to know that.  Maybe somebody should 'splain it to him.

Well that is because they were called Oklahoma University at one time and now University of Oklahoma. If you look at their decals on their helmets it is OU ... and not UO. By changing the name it makes it look like they are the university of the state.

Just like a few years ago Findlay college/Findlay University changed their name to University of Findlay now and call themselves "UF" now.

But Miami doesn't really have much of an argument there because specifying Florida or Ohio is necessary in order to determine which university you are speaking about.  This is not true of Ohio.

Why couldn't you say Miami University for the one in Ohio and University of Miami for the one in Florida since that is their "proper names" now since that is what we have been talking about for the past hour.

Okay been to much fun and might be back later to look at some of the other threads I posted on.

Well, do you know when O$U added the "The"?  It was in 1914 when they asked the legislature to change their name of the "University of Ohio."  The General Assembly balked at that, so as a consolation move added the "The."  Strange thing is we've always had a "The" in our name.  We've just never used it except in formal circumstances like commencement ceremonies and on diplomas.

If you said "The Ohio State University" and "The Ohio University" for osu and Ohio, respectively, no one would complain, since those are our proper names under the relevant Ohio statutes and there is no possible confusion between those two.

But again, if you want to insult your rival, actually insult them. "Ohio A&M" bothers them more than "Ohio" does.

From now on, I will only refer to the team from East Lansing as, "Michigan"

And since they are the only real school in that state to be worthy of that name, I will now refer to the team from Ann Arbor as "Wolverines." I wouldn't want to confuse them with the team that everyone knows in the state of Michigan, so I'll leave out the "Michigan" when referring to them.

It will be interesting to see how Michigan does in the NCAA tournament. They have had an excellent run, including a huge 4 point win over Ohio State in the Big 10 Championship. Michigan's Draymond Green is a beast! I expect Michigan to make a pretty nice run in the dance!

In other news, I think Ohio is playing the Wolverines?

______

I'm not a Wolverine hater, but be honest, can't you see how that would be a tiny bit dissrespectful, for someone who says they aren't trying to be dissrespectful?

Doesn't really bother me.

You know how many times on selection Sunday that analyst made the mistake of calling Michigan State as Michigan.

What is funny is most people or you if you want to start this new saying -- whenever you say "Michigan" will still believe the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan and not Michigan State.

This is Michigan for God sakes!

Don't worry about it. There are many of us alums who have no problem being called Ohio U, OU, the Bobcats or Ohio. After all, the above names were used when plenty of Bobcats were on campus.

I'm just happy we're in post season play.

And to the Bobcat poster who suggested the guys in Ann Arbor be called U of Michigan -- wake up call, they ARE called that! Anyone who lived in Michigan anytime in the past few decades has heard them referred to that many, many times.
