Ohio (13): Ohio knows what it's like to be a Cinderella. In 2010, the 14-seed Bobcats knocked off three-seed Georgetown before losing to Tennessee in the second round. The Bobcats have won eight of their last nine games while Michigan has struggled some in the last couple weeks. Earlier this year, Ohio nearly upset No. 7 Louisville, but fell 59-54. Of all the Cinderella teams, Ohio might have the easiest shot to the Sweet 16. And wouldn't it be great for Ohio to get a measure of revenge against Michigan, which uses the Bobcats name (in a demeaning way) to refer to Ohio State?

Above from yahoosports  if anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

Thanks, from the piece I didn't realize they just meant Ohio.  Maybe the Bobcats can have unis that say "The Ohio University" ?  That'll piss off OSU and Michigan at the same time

I don't know if Michigan would really care; they'd probably look at that more as a swipe at OSU.

Ohio State would probably get upset with it.

I know Michigan fans, alums and students --- never heard that.

I do get the feeling, however, that they think Ohio is an easy win.

I noticed that all of the Michigan basketball players interviewed for Friday's match up referred to their loss at the Big Ten Tournament as a loss to "Ohio". When asked how they refer to the team they are playing this Friday they smiled and answered "Ohio University".
No doubt, forevermore tOSU will be known as "Ohio" in Ann Arbor. I think it is a way to get under tOSU's skin.

How does that get under OSU's skin when they refer to themselves as Ohio?

If they had any brains in AA they would refer to O$U as "Ohio A&M."  That's their original name, and it would really bug them to be called that.  They are not upset by being referred to as "Ohio."  Many of their fans still think they are "Ohio."  If this is really an attempt to get under the skins of those in Columbus, it is failing miserably.

I dunno when do they play Penn? the whole thing is kind of retarded IMHO

If tOSU was not so arrogant  and obnoxious the rest of the state would not have to suffer the wrath of opponents and get dragged into the conversation just by association. Really successful branding when you drag down the rest of the state with you.

Living in Columbus, most of the chatter I hear about this is bemusement. I don't think it bothers as many OSU fans as it does Ohio fans. It's just another one of those attempts by UM to counterattack "that school up north" nonsense.

I heard the OHIO reference before ... but the blurb says that Michigan refers to OSU as the Bobcats. I am not sure that is true.

Anyways, I do remember when Obama came to UC during the last election and asked a packed arena "What's up Bobcats?"   ------- classic Barack.

I went to UC my freshman year before transferring to OU, so I find that particularly amusing! :)

Robert Fox ... agree with you.

The thing that gets me is Ohio State fans get upset or feel like Michigan fans are taking a swipe at them by calling them "Ohio", but in fact if you go to their games, see their commercials on the BTN, or old footage of football games where even in their own stadium it said Michigan and Ohio", etc... all you hear is OH-IO cheer.

Think "most" Michigan fans are adopting the "Ohio" for the Buckeyes because of Coach Hoke. He has always called them "Ohio" for as long as I can remember.

He is born and raised in Ohio so he knows both schools quite well and don't believe he is taking a swipe at either one. He coached against Ohio University when he was at Ball State.

He was asked along time ago about this as well and also recently and he tells people he calls Ohio State "Ohio" and he calls Ohio University "Bobcats" or "Ohio U".

Not sure how it can be a swipe against them honestly when most of their fan-base calls themselves that as well.

It isn't about it being a swipe on OSU, it is disrespectul and ridiculous in regards to Ohio.  It makes absolutely no sense to call Ohio State "Ohio" and call Ohio "Ohio U."  You really don't see how dumb that is?  What if we started calling Michigan State "Michigan" and Michigan "U of Michigan?"  You wouldn't think that was strange at best and insulting at worst?

Well Michigan State doesn't call themselves "Michigan" like Ohio State fans call themselves "Ohio" or do their own little cheers of "OH-IO" ... maybe if they went to a better school they could add "State" to their cheer and not cut themselves off.

Well Michigan is UofM.

Take the "disrespect" all you want and use that to "hate" on Michigan all you want, but as I said earlier and also what Coach Hoke has said since the very beginning it is nothing about "disrespecting" anybody. He calls Ohio State "Ohio" and call Ohio University usually "Bobcats".

I am not disputing that Ohio State fans are idiots who don't know their own name, but I am not sure that is a good enough excuse to completely disregard the name of an institution.  There are about 350 D1 programs in the country and according to Hoke/etc....There is only one who doesn't deserve to be referred to as their actual name.  That is disrespectful no matter what way you slice it.  I have nothing against Michigan, even like them at times so we can share in our mutual hatred of Ohio State...but you're dead wrong on this.

Using our trademarked name as a pejorative for your rival may seem clever, but it actually feeds the insatiable egos of Suckeyes everywhere. You see, they use “Ohio” as a birthright. In their minds, they own the state, the word, the state flag, the state symbols, and the hearts of the state’s citizenry. Your idiot coaches are only reinforcing that staggering arrogance.
If you want to insult tOSU, call it by its original name. As someone already pointed out, it was established as Ohio A&M 66 years after Ohio University was founded as the oldest school west of the Appalachians.

I recently spent the day in Columbus and it was a sea of strip malls, fast food restaurants, chain stores and people all dressed up in their OSU gear. Not the cradle of civilization by any stretch. They need whatever comfort they get from their delusional identity.

Maybe we should reach out to our lost O$U fans. I don't take their calling themselves Ohio as anything more than jealousy.

They made the inferior decision by attending Cow College and now they want to make up for it.

Who knows? Maybe the evolution of this whole Ohio thing will cause Ohio (State) to start trimming their unis with green, having a more entertaining marching band, and possibly then becoming Ohio University at Columbus?

I think we need to turn this into a chance to help our little brothers reach their inner peace.

We aren't insulting them at all by the name. If we wanted to insult them we would call them truck driver university.

One of our own writer for our site went to Ohio U.

How by calling you Ohio Bobcats?

Is this one of those "envy" things going on or feeling like a "little brother" type of deal?

Sorry I guess I don't get how calling you Ohio U, Bobcats, or Ohio Bobcats is insulting to you?

This will be my last post about this issue ... wow.

No, by saying another institution has a right to our name.  It isn't envy in any way, it is just completely ridiculous.  Like I said, there is no other situation like this in the entire country.
