Non-issue here.

Anyone's surprised that we're seeking funds to raise Coach's salary?  Not anyone who knows economics, politics, the state of public education.

Social media--is surge of adreniline emotion the best way to view life?  I've seen how it doesn't work as the best way to run a business.  And, not everything needs to be reacted to.

I have the mental image of the Love sipping his morning coffee, fireing up his web browser, and then spitting his coffee all over the screen as he read this article.

In all honesty I'm secretly hopeing they put these and the shorts back up.  I wasn't able to buy them on the first go round, but now have the extra funds for them.

I know Devil's Advocate is a dangerous game to play with The Love, but I can't help myself... What if this is the scenario?
  • Leadership knew Groce would get an offer like this and prepared.
  • Our counter still isn't as good as Illinois (shocker, we can't pay as much) and he could lead
  • In the meantime, we've been disappointed that there were barely any new OBC memberships/pledges following the Sweet 16 run (I recall reading in another thread that someone called to start a membership and the young woman who he talked to said as much)
  • The Athletic Office noticed while (thousands?) of people signed a petition to keep Groce, very few have sent in donations
  • They reasoned "we need to give these yokels a kick in the pants so they give some money" and put out the leak, even though they already have a counter-offer out to Groce who's currently mulling it over, and even though we don't plan to use any of those donations that roll in on the offer itself if he turns it down, but the many other things we need to do.
Certainly it could still make us look a little dumb, but if that's the case it's not *that* bad, is it?

I think if printed quickly and sold today, these would sell....

The "leak" wasn't a leak at all. It was a statement by the basketball SID. Who knows, perhaps Groce authorized the comment.

Apparently someone is reading my threads:

@thepostsports (1/2) Ohio SID Tom Symonds says statements from AP about Ohio's efforts to increase Groce's pay were not considered to be on the record.

@thepostsports (2/2) Symonds said statements were not based on department's official stance about efforts to offer Groce a higher salary.

Glad we issued corrections, but I fear the damage has been done.

Edit - Coleman is wrong.

The Athletic Department could help itself out by sending an email to known sports supporters. I got plenty of emails about the bowl trip last year, but I haven't received any during or following the Sweet 16 run.

Yes, I know there is a link on OhioBobcats.com where people can give. But a lot of people may not. Make it as easy on people as possible to get those credit cards out.

Well, Bobcatlove has a bit of a point, but, really, so what?

Everyone involved in college athletics knows our situation.  Its not a surprise.

That would be my thoughts as well.  It at least would be a good start.  And imagine the attendance increase that might occur at baseball/softball games were beer to be made available at the ballparks.

No major damage done at all.  Poorly managed communication that can and should be course corrected (very easy but need to do it sooner than later).  And God help us if they are looking at threads/posts here for insight or management direction.

I get an average of 3-4 emails/week from the Athletic Department.  I got even more during the tournament run regarding tickets, team status, Bobcat Bashes, etc.  Nearly every email I get from them has something about the Ohio Bobcat Club and the Multipurpose Facility.  Also, anyone wanting tickets to the NCAA games that was not already an OBC member, had to join in order to purchase through Ohio.

If folks are unaware of the Ohio Bobcat Club, it is because they don't ever attend games at Peden/Convo or they don't read their emails from the university.

I'm gonna disagree.  I attend games and I check my email daily.  The only reason I signed up for a monthly donation was talking with McDavis at the Nashville Bobcat Bash.  And I've read some threads on here about it since as well.

I've mentioned it to at least 20 people over the last week and I typically receive blank stares.  And these are people who go to at least a few games a year.

Maybe...maybe not.  You talked about looking at larger, more strategic view in another thread, but we are all taking a very narrow view on this.  Perhaps, Groce had a deal with the AD (no one could blame him, good money - $1.5 mil, quality job).  We know the BOT, alumni, HS coaches in Chicago do not like it.  AD has to get out of the deal.  Can't just sever it, makes him look even worse than he already does - amazing - but the University also takes a hit.  Makes Groce look bad - weak.

But if Ohio comes back publicly with a counter offer, it gives everyone an out.  AD can say we never had a contact in place, John called and said he was staying at Ohio.  Groce says he never had a deal in place, Admin came to me and we have an extended deal here.  The poorly released statement starts the ball rolling of this mutual separation.  Why may it be mutual? - why is the byline CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - it should be Athens - unless it was "leaked" by Illinois.  Just saying - there may be more message management here than we think (though the "message" was poor).

CC - I would agree with you if we weren't putting retractions/corrections out there. I think the message got mis-managed by accident. Nothing malicious, someone just spoke out of school and it burned us.

ring a bell?

but right now, Illinois is not my chief concern - and the Matta thing has a big part in that.

It quoted Ohio's basketball SID, not an unnamed source. We then said it was an off-the-record statement, not one meant for publication. Then Arkley tweets the original statement isn't "exactly" true. If the backtrack is to be believed, my guess is the SID learns a lesson the hard way, nothing more.
