What an unbelievable Public Relations gaffe this morning. Why would ANYONE be authorized to say we are in the process of fundraising to give Groce a raise to keep him at Ohio?

1. You think Groce wants to stay somewhere where they're scraping and cobbling every penny, nickle, and dime  together just to get him paid every 2 weeks?

2. Can you make Ohio look any more minor league during a story that has us on the National Landscape?

Someone compared the fundraising efforts to a "garage sale" on twitter, and I see that as an apt comparison.

Maybe we're fundraising on the backchannels. Maybe we're not. Either way, those matters are private to everyone but the donors themselves. If they choose to announce their intentions, fine - but the University shouldn't be leaking something like this.

I agree. I tweeted that it sounded like we are digging around in couch cushions for change to pay him.

Fellas...don't forget to check the cup holders in your cars as well. Good grief.

Should I go to Coinstar or just use some good, old-fashion coin wrappers?

Let me add:

I'm not saying we won't keep him, but if I were Groce, it would just leave a bad taste in my mouth that the collection plate had to make an extra pass just for me. Anyone with a conscious would feel the exact same.

Also, I still think we dodge the Illinois bullet and have to deal with something else in the next few weeks/months where we lose him.

Coinstar...it's quicker and the one at my local Kroger never fails me in a crisis situation like this.

Not to mention, shouldn't we have been quietly fundraising for this day from the beginning. Or at least since we beat Georgetown. We hired a young, successful, enthusiastic coach. Did we really think that he would stick around all that long? Why not start placing your pennies in the penny jar for this day? And if the day doesn't come...oh well, you now have a few extra million in the rainy day fund.

Can we get a picture of Athens elementary school kids putting pennies in a "Keep Coach Groce" jar on the front page of the Messenger?

My original thought (in one of my posts) was that Jim and Rod were ready for this day to come.

I'm more than a little worried I was wrong there.

If they weren't ready for Groce to become a hot commodity, we had a major shortfall in leadership on this issue.

The minute we beat Akron to go to Tourney #2 in 3 years, we should have braced ourselves for a storm.

I still think (and take it on faith) Jim and Rod were ready and this fundraising thing is just smoke and mirrors.

Love - Please keep it in the 20 page thread, of which you should be proud to be the author of.  How can we catch up to Illinois' 500 pages if you're going off on rabbit trails in other threads?

Wrappers.  Coinstar takes a percentage and we need all we can get.

I am hoping that it was just a poor choice of words from our spokesperson.  But why we have a spokesperson talking about this right now is a head scratcher.

I've gone rogue.  I hit my tag team partner over the head with a chair and let him get pinned to lose the belts. I'm entrenched in the leak thread now.

Perhaps this is a ruse to find out who the leaks are in our athletic department...oh sorry, too much time spent on the Illini boards.  Perhaps their donors would kick in some action, though.  I still get tax deductions courtesy of Smithfield, RI.

Ha! Either that or a lemonade stand. Or the kids going door to door selling candy bars. Four bucks for a Kit Kat, are you kidding me?????

Poorly worded, but brutally honest.  When high majors come calling, mid-majors need to go find money (e.g., from donors).  My guess is we had the $500,000 - $600,000 figured out (e.g., to combat a Nebraska), did not have the $800,000 - $1 million to combat an Illinois.

I'm sure Groce was aware of the financial situation. The reason he made ~300k before is because 300k is what we could afford. It's the reason Solich makes what he makes and no more.

It is one thing to be small time, it is a completely different thing to advertise it.

Maybe they have and the coffers came up empty. I don't know and it's just my theory-maybe McDavis and Schaus have been quietly trying to raise more funds or looking for ways to raise $ and they have just come up with nothing? At the same time they've had to raise $ to finish the IPF and that seems to be going nowhere. Maybe the money's just not there; hopefully it is and we just don't know about it yet!!
